Wow, this place really felt like I was in Korea. Parking is annoying, especially at night, but we were lucky and found one right in front of the restaurant.
We just stopped by for some makchang, booldak, and beer. The makchang ($23) was really good. Though I love makchang, I can never tell when it's safe to eat, so it was nice to have the server cook, cut, and let us know when it was ready. One con was that portions were pretty small 🙁 Next time, I think we'll just order 2 servings.
The booldak ( fire (?) chicken) ($18~) was pretty good. Not spicy at all. Portions were pretty big! Rice and kimchi are given if you ask.
I liked the egg and mussel soup they give out. The steamed oysters were pretty good, too.
The atmosphere is identical to a typical little bar in Korea.
A lot of people seemed to be eating the clams and some sort of seafood steam, so we'll try that during our next visit.
Huge portion! I got the seafood soup that came in 2 big pots with way too many clams (in a good way). Galbi is also really good here. Great for a group of friends, I was actually here for my friend's birthday and they sang happy birthday and turned off the lights before bringing the cake out. Service was quite good and they're pretty busy at night. I'd recommend making reservation ahead of time if you have a big group (around 8 people+)
This is your casual, Korean drinking spot done right. The food is pretty on point and the price is just right. Came here to catch up with some friends and though the space is pretty tight with the oil drum cut out table/grills, and overall ambiance that would leave most of my non Korean friends asking "really? this place?", but we left with satisfied bellies and some money left over for round 2 of the nights debauchery.
Parking can be a challenge in that area but if you find a spot hurry on over and dive in
It's official, Korean seafood grills like this should only be visited to drink THEN to eat. I made the mistake of visiting just for the food and I thought it was just OK. This place kinda had the same feel as Sik Gaek a few blocks away.
The food:
Haemul Pajun- Seafood pancake. I thought the one here was good. I thought the seafood flavor was nice and I enjoyed the crispiness of the pancake. I would get this again. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Hang Jung Sal- Pork jowl BBQ. This was pretty good but I was expecting it to be sexier. It was just OK, I was expecting it to be fattier and more tender. The flavor was alright. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Wang JoGae- scallop, clams, whelk, mussels, clams w/ special sauce and small seafood-udon. This was a big ass seafood grill and I was kinda disappointed. The flavor of the seafood was on the mild side, it was basic grilled seafood but the seafood was lacking in flavor. I did enjoy the clams since they were really fresh, but everything else was kinda boring. The seafood udon I did not like. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
After getting crowded out of the Queens night market, we came here starving for some food. Compared to the typical traditional Korean BBQ place, this had a younger and hipper vibe. The grills were built from what looked like oil drums and you can store your jackets inside your stools so you don't have to smell like what you ate afterwards. This place seems to be popular for their grilled seafood and meats. We ordered a variety of brisket, short ribs, pork jowl, pork belly, other cuts of meat, a sea food hot pot and a dish that was basically grilled pumpkin with short ribs. The highlight was definitely the marinated short ribs and the grilled pumpkin with short ribs. The pumpkin dish had a whole pumpkin baked with short ribs, rice cakes, onions, and a egg. The sauce was amazing with rice and overall the meat was really tender, juicy and tasted awesome. Regarding the seafood I would probably have preferred the option that allowed us to grill it over the fire. Since gorging on meat, the broth was pretty amazing; light, sweet and surprisingly refreshing. But the seafood itself was pre cooked and was a little rubbery for my taste.
The service itself was great, very laid back and attentive. The meal would definitely have been better if they hadn't ran out of lettuce for wrapping. The side dishes they provided was unique in that one of it is a entirely fried tilapia, doused with sweet and sour sauce. The fish was pretty large and was refreshingly different compared to the meh generic side dishes from other Korean restaurants. The normal side dish of a soup and steamed eggs was also provided. Overall this place is a solid option for Korean BBQ in the area. The price was right, crowd was young, portions were generous, and the service was solid.
Hot Damn! This place is a must try if you want fresh clams. I came here with a couple of friends and we ordered the mak chang ( cow intestine), soon du bu, and steamed clams with various seafood.
The mak chang was so tasty, crispy, and had just the right amount of fat. There's a dipping sauce but I prefer to eat it plain. It was so good that you really don't need any additive flavor.
Their steamed clams was fresh and juicy. But please wait for a minute before eating it. I kind of burned my fingers because I couldn't wait to eat it.
Overall, my belly was satisfied and I will be back for more!
They moved 1 store down but still has the same charm. This location is cleaner, they have padded seats which was really nice. The service rocked, the samgyupsal great, kalbi delicious, and the seafood was fresh.
A must go!
This is my go-to Korean charcoal BBQ in Queens, for some reason I remember them by an ancient Chinese warrior's name but I realized they either changed the name or they had a nickname. Anyway, their steamed pumpkin with ribs is probably on my NYC's Top 10 list, it's a whole Japanese pumpkin sliced and steamed to perfection, topped with Deobboki (Korean rice cake), onions, and a sweetened gravy, the textured of the mushy pumpkin and the chewy ribs go together so well that I've had two and I could go for another!
We usually order the seafood combo, you get plenty, add a few more beef dishes if you have a large party, which I generally prefer to go with to try different types of meat.
The interior is very casual, you pretty much sit around a rusty metal round table on top of a gasoline barrel, the round stools are those things you can find at local dollar stores, but it's fun. They play good music and I love the vibe, service is ok but they can only serve you so much, I'm not gonna ask for more. One time they sang and danced for my friend's birthday, and the guests there would participate too. I'd love to have soju and eat my BBQ there.
By the way, their tofu soup is really, really, really good.
