  1. Yeep. Everything is so very expensive here. Based on the sheer convenience, I don't think Gourmet Garage is all that bad for a last-minute item that you forgot to pick up from Fairway or Whole Foods, but I don't really see a student budget being able to maintain regular shopping here.

However, sometimes you might get really lucky and just stumble upon something that's not complete and utter price gouging – I picked up a massive fruit tray for a Super Bowl party at a pretty reasonable price (I think around $13-15). And I also need to give credit for having sliced Balthazar bread loaves that come out to around $2.75-$3.00 per loaf. And, of course, for those really soul-crushing days, Gourmet Garage carries Ben & Jerry's Half-Baked froyo at the perfect temperature (i.e., not an icy brick that denies you the healing powers of chocolate and dairy and sugar as you fruitlessly chip away, your already black mood further darkening), unlike the neighboring Q-Mart.

I still prefer Fresh from the Farm (right outside the 96th street subway station) for my apples and avocados, and Associated for the $10 for 10 yogurt sales.

Plus, the cashiers here are sometimes a few galaxies away. I hesitate to presume what's going on in someone's head, but on at least one occasion, the cashier and I will just stare at each other in limp-eyed confusion after he's given me back my card. Do I sign anything? Am I getting a receipt? Are we finished? If I didn't know better, he was riding a winged unicorn in the rings of Jupiter.

  2. Sushi and cheese.

    YES.

I'm gnawing on a block of brie right now as I'm typing.

  3. Yeah, this place is way overpriced for normal grocery items.  $5 Kombucha and $4 fancy pastas isn't really my bag.  However, it should be noted that they make excellent sushi!  Seriously, it was really fresh and somehow didn't taste like it had been sitting around in a refrigerator.  Bravo, Gourmet Garage.  Other than that… I'd skip this place.

  4. A little pricey but worth it! The store is clean. Employees are hard at work in morning. I do find the store lay out confusing. The more you shop in this location the easier it is to find what you need. I've taken photos of my favorite sections. The cashier this am was very nice. No lines at the time I was in there today. It was between 8-9 am approximately.
If you like more of an upscale feel to your grocery shopping this is the place for you. Highly recommend.

  5. Yes, it's expensive. But it's also higher quality food than you'd get at Pioneer or Associated. They have a guy at the fish counter! Yes, there's someone THERE to cut that fillet to your specifications. They have fresh sushi! They have gourmet cheeses! Don't come here for staples and bargain basement prices. Come here when you need a good hunk of manchego, some good fish, fresh bread, italian cold cuts, etc.

  6. I can't believe it took me this long to yelp Gourmet Garage.
They have 5 or 6 locations and I shop at two of them – here and the one in the East 60's.

Great for gourmet goodies – expensive but not horrid.
    Gorgeous produce. (Especially in summer.)

    Small.

    Good for catering, too.

  7. This is a fun place to walk around, and it has many items you won't find elsewhere (unless you can trek down to Trader Joe's). They have a few samples out for you to try, which is also very fun. I love the prepared foods section, as well as the semi-prepared foods. Where else can you get cashew butter or purple asparagus? The price of milk is the same as elsewhere, which is nice to know, however many other things are more expensive, I don't come here for the essentials.
If you want fancy items, and want to save dollars, you have to travel down to Trader Joes. Sorry.
