This place has a pretty big selection of individual slices. The two pizza slices I got were bacon with pepperoni and a plain slice. Both slices were okay not terrible. But I also went before closing so maybe the pizza slices weren't as fresh. The three stars are only based on the two slices I had.
I had a plain slice and it was not so great. I don't think I will be back.
really good pizza, but what I like most is they have a really big selections of slices. Also they are usually open pretty late
Default pizza place since I live close by but it isn't great. The pizza has a pretty good balance of cheese and sauce. I like the dough/crust because it's not too thick or dough-y .I usually get the eggplant parm hero – Big pieces of breaded eggplant and not soggy is a plus. Very quick order and they are always friendly at the counter.
Sometimes I'm an idiot. Sometimes I walk by a place, look in, think it looks too divey for whatever my taste is at that moment, and walk on by.
I did that for months every time I walked by Grand Ave. Silly, silly, SILLY me!
I had a friend tell me that Grand Ave is his go-to pizza joint in the 'hood. And I know the man is particular. So I decided to give it a try one day. Awesome, welcoming service. Awesome selection from the ground up…and they'll accommodate changes you want to make. Good flavor to everything I've had here. Good prices. They even deliver AND give you a magnet to put on your fridge 🙂
My only qualm is that they're the old school type of place that pops your slices on a plate and puts it in a paper bag. I'm a "put my slices in a box" dude. They also don't ask if you want to "dress" your slice before they bag it. The first time this happened, they saw me trying to open the bag. They quickly offered to take it out for me, patiently waited while I dressed the slice, and bagged it fresh for me. Second time, same deal: didn't ask before bagging. This time the dude offered me take home packets. I was okay with this (though I still prefer to dress it so it can soak up in to the slice as I walk home) until I realized that they only give garlic, peppers, and oregano: no parmesan.
Gotta take one star away for that. Regardless, if you want a local, no frills, still nice, professionally served, quality slice? This is the joint!
Scalding Pizza
Overall: 3.25 Stars
Grand Avenue Pizza is exactly what you expect out of your local pizzeria, it isn't high quality, but it isn't low quality either. Standard prices, taste, décor, clientele, etc.
The two pluses for me personally were the table service and the scalding hot pizza. It is uncommon for a local pizzeria to bring your pizza to the table. It was a welcome change. Although I believe the pizzeria was a bit overstaffed for the lunch hour in my opinion. I don't believe a pizzeria needs 3-5 people standing behind the counter/back area.
Most people do not enjoy their pizza scalding hot (just hot), but in this case I received my white slice burning hotter than a jalapeno. It was fine for me (nearly burned the roof of my mouth), but at least I know it will stay warm the entire time I eat the slice. Just tell them that you don't want the slice to be too hot when they put it in the oven.
The beef patty tasted good, but it fell apart as I was eating it.
As I stated earlier, Grand Avenue Pizza is similar to all local pizzerias, except with a little more added service and scalding hot pizza.
Usually I can't stand little pizza corner shops like this. Mediocre dough, mediocre sauce, greasy poor quality cheese. I have to admit though, I came in the other day looking for a straight typical NY style slice and they nailed it. I had another with eggplant and a chopped fresh garlic sauce with a bunch of salty parm on top and it really hit the spot. Not the highest quality and a little pricey for what you get.
Recommend when you're in a pinch or looking for a no frills down and dirty NY slice.
Meh. Came here for lunch and got a mozzarella slice. The mozzarella was tasteless, the sauce was bland, the crust was so-so. At $3.50/slice it was very overpriced.
