  1. Really great food! We were wandering around the mall when we found this spot. I will admit I came here with two of my Chinese friends which was very helpful only because even though they never tried this place, they knew what to order. We ordered jellyfish (didn't have it but it looked good, and spicy), 2 orders crab soup dumplings and chicken soup dumplings, pork chop, fried dumplings, and a seafood noodle dish with shrimp scallops and squid. It all was very delicious. They served hot tea as well. Everything came out to about $18 a person. Pretty decent for all that food.

Best part is that there is a parking garage (yes you have to pay for it) but it's easier to find parking than looking around mainstreet.

Definitely coming back here for soup dumplings!

  2. Don't let the name fool you.  I thought they served dim sum here so I came here one day with the husband while shopping.   But their dim sum was like 10 items which was disappointing.  once I got over the disappointment and order some food, its actually not that bad.   Like some say, the service is lacking but really which chinese restaurant isn't? The food was okay, will i make a special trek to come here, probably not.  but its convenient if i am in the mall.   We had shrimp dumpling, shu mai, beef chow fun, and pork dumpling.   All of the food was just average but not too bad.  Price was pretty reasonable even the beef chow fun priced at $11.95 was pretty big portion.   All in all, I would probably come back but only if i am hungry and in the mall.

  3. Dishes are very small
The place is also very small and tight. Barely able to sit comfortably and have a proper dinner
The food is ok, not bad, not good.
As I recall this place does not have something that piqued my interest, very normal and ordinary place to have dinner.

  4. if you're hungry and out shopping in the SkyMall, then Grandma's is reliable Chinese food but not spectacular. I wouldn't make a trip specifically for it though.

the menu overall looked pretty typical, and so I felt a bit letdown that we had gone to Flushing and ended up eating Americanized Chinese food that I could've gotten anywhere. I know Flushing places love to capitalize on us non-Asians, but c'mon…

so far as the quality of the food itself – my beef and pepper dish was decent and the portion size was huge.

the free wifi is nice because phone reception in the SkyMall is terrible.

  5. We went there because we were shopping and we were lazy to go outside, we should have made the effort because the food was disappointing. The place itself was very modern and nicely decorated.
pork and crab meat soup dumplings- It was disgusting. The broth was extremely sweet, like MSG sweet. Then we could see the fat pieces on the dumpling, like it was not cooked off.

chicken and chive dumplings- OK, the outside was overcooked and mushy that it was falling off. We went around 3, so it was probably left over and sitting.

fish ball with coconut curry gravy- no flavor. It seems like the fish balls were just defrosted and dumped into the sauce.

chicken and pork dumpling and noodle soup- This was the best dish, thank goodness otherwise I would have still been hungry. The noodles were perfectly cooked, freshly mad and it had this nice chewy texture. The dumplings were also very good and tasted freshly made. The broth was also very light and also tasted freshly made. Everything just went well together.

  6. Took a trip into flushing with my parents to run some errands and eat a quick lunch. We were headed to another restaurant until my dad suggested we try Grandma's Dim Sum instead. Being the Yelper I am, I immediately looked up the place and was appalled by the two star rating it has. Maybe I should've told my parents, but I didn't want to be the party pooper.

The wait was not as long as I thought it would be and we were seated after ten minutes. They don't even bother with friendly service so don't expect that. Everyone is just trying to do everything as fast as they can, with the least amount of facial expressions as possible. We ordered the soup dumplings, the grandma's fried rice, some sweet and sour pork w/ taro and two dimsum dishes.

Like most people mentioned, the dimsum is very limited. Nothing you can't get from most restaurants. The soup dumplings had very thick skin and you can immediately tell from the little "knot" on the top. The Grandma's fried rice comes in a bamboo bucket. The rice is very dry, and there's a whole lot of super pink ham/spam, some corn and a few pieces of fried dough. Definitely not worth the money. The sweet and sour pork had good flavor, but the ratio of pork to taro was maybe 1:10. The pork pieces were almost all bone or fat with little to no meat. However, I do like the taro. They were crispy and surprisingly addicting in the sweet and sour sauce. But I didn't order this dish to get a full plate of taro and no edible meat.

I won't be returning to this establishment as I think it is way overpriced for the quality of food it offers.

  7. My friend suggested getting dim sum and said there's a place in skyview so we settled for this place. Unfortunately, there's hardly any of the usual dim sum dishes here. What a misleading restaurant name.

We ordered 3 dishes to share between 3 people. We got the curry fish balls (~$4), stir fry tofu dish with salted fish (last one on the tofu list), and the braised pork belly dish with bamboo (I forgot the actual name). For the curry fish balls, I expected it to be similar to the on from Flushing's AA Plaza that used to be underneath the train tracks due to the picture of them on skewers. They were actually served in a bowl with curry sauce similar to roti canai. It tasted fine, but a spicy kick would've been nice. The tofu was good, but the salted fish part threw me in for a loop…so fishy and saltyyy. The pork belly dish was really tender and easy to cut, but essentially you're eating salty fat. It was a good thing it was shared between 3 ppl. I don't think any of us could've handled it singlehandedly. The prices here are on the high side considering what the dishes are. We paid $38 with tip and tax. It was nice to try something new, but it's not really anything I'd go back for round 2 for.

  8. I'll keep this brief. I'm leaving an updated review (from 2 to 4 stars) for Grandma's Dim Sum because my experience has since improved. I said I wouldn't come back here again after my first time, but mom kept insisting because her friend said the food was much better. Did they get a new chef? Either way, I come back every time we're shopping at Sky View and get too lazy to leave the mall for food.

Notable dishes: the beef with mushrooms in XO sauce, and black pepper lamb chops. The meat is seasoned wonderfully, and oh, so tender and juicy! I also reordered the beef chow fun (wet style), and it wasn't oily like last time, and chock full of meat and veggies. I'm glad we gave this place a second chance. Sometimes mama does know best.

Only drawback is that the prices are kind of high for what it is. They also need to add individual portions of rice and noodle dishes, for people who don't want to eat family-style and those dining solo.
