Kinda like a cross between a hospital coffee shop and a nursing home dining room. It seemed that everyone was dining with their elderly relative, as we were. I did have a great Greek salad and Thursday pea soup. Attentive servers. Wasn't my choice but it was a pleasant lunch.
Sing to the tune of Billy Joel ' s "Piano Man" (as it is playing as I write this review):
It's 8am on a Thursday.
The regular crowd leaves for work.
The old man sitting next to me, watches the waitress with a creepy ol smirk.
And the diner it smells like old people and not like what's cooking on the grill.
It's dead as hell in this diner and there's not much money going into the till.
Sing us a song of The Great Neck Diner, I'm not really sure how it goes. But it's sad and it stinks and my meal's incomplete, when I come in here all alone.
Now the waitress is passing out coffee
To the regulars sitting at the booth
But she passes my empty cup without filling it
And I'm like "hey man that's not cool"
And the bacon is the worst cut there ever was!
And crispy is a word they don't get
The eggs are just past their expiration date
And the coffee it tastes just like led.
Laidididdi Lai Lai la la
Never again, never again!
I've been coming to the Great Neck Diner since it first opened years ago and cannot believe I forgot to review it! Shame on me!
Anyway, it's your standard yet slightly upscale diner fare in the heart of town that even offers outdoor seating in nice weather. Are you getting a five-star meal? No. You get exactly what you come here for, diner food! Duh.
I've had anything and everything here. Eggs, salads, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, etc., and it's always good. I'm a big fan of their sweet potato fries and somehow developed a soft spot for their fried calamari appetizer (it isn't amazing but has a flavor that's very…comforting…for lack of a better word).
I'd also like to point out the service here, which is great. The manager or owner (not sure what his role is but he's the super-Italian guy behind the counter) is great. He's a jokester and is all about customer service and making the diners happy. I've never heard someone ask the people coming in if they prefer to be seated in the colder or warmer part of the restaurant, a nice gesture.
Overall, I'm a fan of this diner. It was a tough location to put a diner after classic Frederick's but GN Diner is a success story.
Good diner fare. The owners use to own Haven Diner back in the day in Port Washington and they've always been very pleasant to us. This establishment is much better for them (decor and traffic-wise). Definitely a great breakfast or lunch spot in Great Neck, but parking is a headache in this town if you're with someone that can't walk from the municipal lot. If you don't have that issue, just park in the muni lot and walk across the street for sure.
The tuna salad and greek omelet are my favorites. I also like their french fries (not the usual steak fries), but they are greasy.
Just going through the motions. Everything was blah on very basic brunch fare. Eggs Benedict was on a cold, non toasted English muffin, and while I am not sure if the muffin is typically toasted, this just was not good. It is cute spot and great location. Thinking if they had any local competition they would be out of business.
