Great Wall Chinese's name makes no real sense to me. but what does make sense is their food: tasty, flavorful, and cheap. open for lunch through dinner.
the delivery service is quick. food always comes piping hot. and the delivery guys are friendly not gruff.
so the food: the sweet sour soup and chicken + anything are great. and soups come in two sizes, so no longer do i have to order a large when all i need is a small.
the fried crab rangoon, boneless spare ribs, and shrimp rolls are the right amount of savory, greasy, and salty for apps. i wasn't as big a fan of their scallion pancakes which were a bit dry.
any protein + vegetable + rice entree has been consistent and great. you can even substitute brown rice without paying a sub fee. no nickel and diming like other places.
of course the dinner combination specials (food + egg roll + can of soda) is a great value and will stuff you for the day or night.
the food quality here is top notch. it's made homestyle and they are not overly heavy with sauces, salt, or oils. for me, the food is consistent delivery bliss. great for a lazy night-in after a rough day of work, sick nights on the couch, or staycation date with Netflix as the feature entertainment.
Well, ask and you shall receive! I gave place four stars solely because I care way too much about getting a fortune cookie. And now they're sending fortune cookies, so fair is fair!
So my original comments stand: food is delicious, fast, and cheap. I'm a creature of habit and order the chicken and broccoli every single time, and you get a ton for $6.50 at lunch with an egg roll, soup, or drink.
Also, my order arrived in TWELVE minutes today. Hard to beat!
I have a love hate relationship with this restaurant…
they always take FOREVER to deliver to my place about an 1 hour – 1 1/2 hours even though they are literally like 5 minutes away from my apartment.
They've messed up my orders twice. One time, I called to ask if they accepted credit cards and the lady told me "no" and I said okay I will still go with the order. I waited two hours.. order never came. I called back and they thought I cancelled the order. I was so hungry and angry I hung up!
The second time , I waited two hours. I called back and they said wrote down the wrong apartment number. However, this time they apologized quickly and delivered my food in 15 minutes. But the delivery man arrived and practically threw the food at me and left in a hurry. Okay, it's not my fault you guys messed up.
As much as I hate the service of this place… the food, I hate to admit is pretty darn good, from the chicken and broccoli to the beef lo mein to general tsos chicken. Everything is always flavorful and crispy. I even like their hot and sour soup , it is not too vinegary like most places. Sometimes I stray away and order from other restaurants because I do not want to wait that long, but it's just not the same, it's either more expensive or tasteless.
I also found out that they are actually listed on seamless.. and low and behold they take credit card. Hmm…. so do they actually take credit card or was the lady lying about it last time?? This will always be a mystery… but whatever I can now order on seamless without having to deal with calling them on the phone.
I know this is a typical Chinese place, so I'm not sure why I had high expectations. Perhaps because of the high ratings? Anyway, fried pork dumplings were mediocre. Vegetable lo mein was bland. Garlic string beans were in a sauce that was definitely not garlic. It was kind of tangy and reddish. No good.
Upside: fortune cookies were good.
My husband kept wanting to try this place and we finally got around to it this evening. We shared an order of the chicken, shrimp & scallops in garlic sauce (I don't eat chicken, but we were already eating a salad and therefore I didn't care about eating less of the main dish). It cost $11.75 plus tax & tip and the portion size was generous.
We placed the order online via Yelp, and a pleasant delivery guy arrived in about 20 minutes. The food tasted *really* good! Also, everything except the rice came in a large & reusable (and microwavable) container.
