Just a great food experience and a wonderful hole-in-the-wall experience. The entire store is run by a mom-pop duo and all of their food is served fresh, delicious and full of love and flavors. For my skeptical viewers, I am biased towards family joints, but this restaurant embodies everything that is great about a true family run dinner joint.
The initial hummus platter was incredibly unique with garlic hummus, roe hummus (which was certainly tasty, although a hit or miss for some), regular (for lack of a better description) and with peppers. We also shared a meat assortment dish with some of the juiciest chicken kebobs, lamb-beef gyros and beef patties (forgot the official term). The shrimp gyro was mildly forgettable, unfortunately, but the moussaka was amazing!
I normally do not like baklava, but after trying my first fresh, non soggy honey goodness, I can see why people go nuts for these dessert items. The baklava was warm, felt like it came straight out of the oven and extremely crunchy and delicious. My sweet tooth almost fell out after eating such an amazing dessert.
Overall, this place will definitely satisfy that hunger for authentic Greek food and your wallet will love you!
Food: 5 stars
Service: 4 stars
Price: 4 stars
Ambiance: 3 stars
I enjoyed my lamb chops so there is nothing I can complain about. The rice was meeh. But I am not a fan of rice so don't take my opinion of it.
The fried zucchini were yummy.
I know how to press "X" on an English language keyboard, but I would have no idea how to do a "Greek X-Press." I can try and figure it out though if you want me to. In the meantime, journey up to the Bronx and try this little unassuming adorable restaurant way up in the North part not far from the very top of Manhattan and S & S Cheesecake and so on, and try one of the best Gyros in New York City.
What to get: Gyro.
What else: Just a city boy, born and raised in South Bronx, took a midnight train going anywhere.
Would I date my Turkish ex again? No. Greek ex? Yes.
My favourite Gyro in NYC (not including the real pork Gyro at BZ Grill in Queens) is at Gyro World not too far from here, also in Bronx. However their inconsistency led me to seek out other Gyros in the town, and my word, I found a very good one named "Greek Express."
If you have a former lover in East Greece and another in Western Greece, then this place would be more suited to your "Greek Ex – West."
As you can see from my picture, it's a cheap, saucy, hefty, delicious Gyro with perfect Gyro meat, with fresh crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes and sauce, and of course soft fluffy yummy pita bread. All of the elements of this Gyro are perfect, so while it's not as good as Gyro World when Gyro World is "on", it's consistently fantastic and I never come to the Bronx without getting a Gyro from here. The service is nice, the prices are low (I think it's under $6 for a Gyro), it's a generous portion, in other words you won't get a much better Gyro than this anywhere in the country.
If your former flame from Athens is bothering you, that's "Greek Ex Stress" and if the girl you used to date from Thessaloniki left some of her clothing with you, that's your "Greek Ex's Dress." I have a few "Greek Exs" myself, and no, I didn't focus on Greek style sex with them, thank you very much. Not that I'm opposed to it. But you know. It's just not the focus. Anyway. Get a Gyro here. Thank me later.
A $20 minimum on cards? Who does that anymore?
That said, I ordered takeout this evening. The gyro platter was delicious. I walked in to place my order and was headed home in less than 10 minutes. Everyone was friendly and the restaurant itself was cute.
To pad my total and meet the dumb card minimum I got a falafel sandwich for lunch tomorrow…looking forward to tearing into that because it looked delicious. Granted, none of this is health food, but I feel better about it than stuffing my face with YoBurger, which is what I originally planned on getting until I saw this place and was like "Oh yeah, I've yet to try that place"
BF has brought home the spinach pie to have with dinner cooked at home on prior occasions. That's also very good as well.
I hate being a party pooper, but overall Greek express might be more of a 3.5 star. I rounded to 4 because service was great (you really feel the mom and pop hospitality) and everything was really fresh and home made (get the baklava!!!!). However, value for money wise and portions were not anything outstanding.
I would definitely recommend getting their home made baklava. Amazing flaky layers with fresh pistachios and that sweet honey sauce. I loved that the entire pastry was NOT soaking in syrup like baklava in most other places, indicating how freshly homemade theirs was.
Ordered the combo platter and eggplant app and it was all delicious. Service was great. Nice cozy restaurant.
I think this place is a great small Greek restaurant. It is not huge (maybe about 15 tables) but it has a good selection, great flavor, and offers take out.
We brought my mother in law (who is Greek I might add) down to Riverdale to check out the neighborhood and we figured this was or best option for lunch. We had lemon chicken soup, zucchini fritters, spinach pie, gyro, and Greek chicken. Everyone was super happy with their meal (including my mother in law, which should be a testament all on its own.) I found the food nice and light (not to oily) and with a great balance of flavors. I will say that we only got the Greek dishes. The owners are from a Greek island and so clearly their wheelhouse is Greek island cuisine.
In general, I was very happy with the meal and the prices so I will be back. It's not the best Greek restaurant I have been to, but I think this is a really great option on the north side of town when you don't want to go all way to Astoria.
Love that it is BYOB but I really rather take a trip to Astoria. Fine place for lunch take out – greek salad or souvlaki. Also like that they open up the patio doors during warm weather.
