  1. This place is pretty good for what it is. It's a much smaller scale of Baja Fresh but with much better food. I had the fish burrito and a side of jalepeno poppers. Both were good and were cooked upon order. Everything tasted fresh and the fish was well seasoned. There are so many options for Tex me  style food now a days that I haven't given them a second shot. I would come back though. Parking is very easy due to them being in a strip mall.

  2. Little expensive. Like their guacamole I think said it was over five bucks. That's a little outrageous since this isn't a real restaurant, it's fast food. But the food is tasty. Nice size portions so even though you're paying more it's worth it. But they don't give enough chips, I would love to get more of them with my food.

  3. One of the original Green Cactus locations was out in Stony Brook across the street from campus, so this brand of Mexican food is very near and dear to my heart 🙂

They then opened a location near my home in Huntington, then eventually near my office in Mineola, woohoo!

My favoritest thing on the menu is the Fish Taco (or Fish Burrito if you're really hungry). I don't know why but they just happen to have the best fish taco of all the mexican places out there. I guess I just like their dressing the best.

Next fav is the steak taco… or anything with their Asada in it. Their steak is tender and flavorful and just so good!

Everything is made fresh to order so it does take some time to pick up your order. I don't care. It tastes good and satisfies my craving for fish tacos. 5-stars!

  4. This place is very similar to Chipotle and Baja Fresh. It is located in a shopping complex between Mama Theresa's and Waldbaum's. On their menu are burritos, tacos, quesadillas, salads, enchiladas, taquitos, pizzas and more. I've tried the Burrito Grande (Charbroiled chicken or steak, rice, black or pinto beans, chopped onions, cilantro, served hot or mild) with steak. The meat is tender, ingredients are fresh. The burrito was smaller than what I expected but still delicious. On the side are tasty chips that are warm and crunchy.  There is also a side bar offering different types of salsa and hot sauces for your entree and chips. Yummy!

  5. My best friend recommended we go to lunch here knowing I love authentic Mexican. The Sombrero here is delicioso! Best Mexican pizza I ever had. Texture and Flavor are key to Mexican cuisine and Geen Cactus has it hands down! Try the Shrimp Soft Tacos here and you will be impressed!

  6. I've been going to this place for the past few years so I could have sworn I already reviewed it. In any case I have to say that I am a fan of this place when I want inexpensive, fast, good Mexican food.

I've tried many different things on the menu. The fish taco is probably one of my favorites – the fish is breaded and fried topped with fresh cabbage and a tangy mayo based sauce. The shrimp and chicken taco are pretty good as well – these you can get hot or mild. The nacho's are a pretty sizable portion best to be shared. The vegetable quesadilla with peppers, onions and mushroom is very good. If you like that you can also get the burrito fajita which has all those ingredients, but with your choice of meat – a good option if you don't like rice in your burrito.

Orders come with a side of tortilla chips (something you would have to pay extra for at Chiptole), which is a plus. They also have a salsa bar with 4 different types of salsa and sauces, lemon and lime wedges, and pickled veges. There are little containers so you can pack these to go as well. Free refills on soda if you eat in.

If this location isn't convenient for you there are currently nine others on the island to choose from.

  7. A story: Once upon a time as a young 16 yr old waif headed off to college at Stony brook University the PA checking me out for my college physical said. "Oh, you're going to Stony Brook. You have to eat at Green Cactus! It's across from the train station in Stony Brook" And I did. And a love affair was born.

Unfortunately that was back in the day before they had locations all over Long Island.  So, believe me you I was pretty damn happy when they finally found their way back near what was at the time my other end of the island at this GCP/Mineola-ish location.

HOWEVER, for whatever reason over the years I've noticed some serious variability in the food.

Sometimes too hot. Sometimes too cold. Sometimes an ocean of guacamole. Sometimes a splotch slightly bigger than a pea. Sometimes the shrimp have been way overcooked. Sometimes the steak requires a chainsaw to gnaw through.

So, I don't know. It's sort of like when you've had a lover for so long you don't want to say anything bad about them although they could seriously benefit from some consistency.

Maybe the situation could be improved by something as easy as a cheatsheet with the basic cooktimes for various proteins. Or timers. I can't speak to their kitchen setup even though the cooking occurs in plain sight.

On an occasion or two I have walked in to find no one out front or in the kitchen area.

So, I don't know. It's good Americanized Mexican food when there are good cooks on hand who care about the food they're cooking. Other times, it is just so-so.

  8. Green Cactus has always been my favorite Burrito place, much more than Chipotle or the likes.

Fish and Shrimp Burrito… Fish and Shrimp Burrito…
I can never decide, both are sooo good!  I always take 1/2 home, they are so big.

But the last time I went they overcooked my shrimp… so 3 stars til they go back to my beloved 5 Star Mexican Place.

Love the fixins bar. Unlimited Soda Fountain. Good.
