We are very fortunate to have a restaurant in our neighborhood serving this light, yet delicious and satisfying cuisine.
In traditional Buddhist style, the dishes are simple, yet flavorful and skillfully prepared.
I would suggest any of the soups, I like the curry soups as well as the hot and sour, but try the wonton soup if you are more of a traditionalist. It's lightly seasoned , so you may want to add a few drops of soy sauce if you want it "take-out salty".
The mixed appetizer dish is a classic Buddhist specialty- it's big, so make sure you have someone to share it with, or bring some home.
The "Gourmet" menu are house specials that you will not find anywhere else.
If you are less adventurous you can pick from the more-traditional vegetable, vegetarian "meat", tofu, or fried rice and noodle dishes.
Restaurant is very clean.
Don't be deterred by the fact that this is a vegetarian restaurant. Carnivore and vegetarians alike will find much to feast on here. Distinguishing itself from so many NYC restaurants by serving up non-greasy Chinese fare, Green Zenphony also does a splendid job of creating inventive vegetarian dishes with mock duck, mock chicken etc. And the more basic vegetable dishes are delicious and healthy, stir fried or steamed with tasty sauces that lack the pools of grease so much for norm for Chinese food here. They started us with a pickled cabbage appetizer, gratis, which was so crunchy, so flavorful, so addictive we asked for more. Then we had the General Tso's Tofu. Large quarters of fried tofu, with a thin, crispy skin giving away to a creamy interior when you bit into it, were tossed in a slight spicy brown sauce. The sauce has diced peppers and fresh mushrooms, and sat on a bed of steamed crunchy broccoli. We loved the flavor and the play of textures. We loved also the eggplant in Thai basil and black bean sauce. It was rather a colorful mélange of vegetables consisting of primarily eggplant but including snow peas, sliced carrots and zucchini in the mix. Again, the difference in textures provided for a terrific mouth feel, while the sauce delighted our taste buds. They might do only vegetables and vegetarian here but they do it well.
The interior of this restaurant is dark cherry wood with pink accents, pretty, clean, with different kinds of dried, plant arrangements set in recesses in the wall. It's more upscale in décor compared to most Chinese places in the area. A visit is worth the higher prices for fresh, clean tasting, delicious food in good portions, and in a space you wouldn't be afraid to take your more OCD friends and family to. Service here is warm and amiable. I strongly recommend this place for those who love vegetarian fare and those who might be skeptical about it. You will be converted.
