While I am not a fan of cash only places (and of cash only places without an ATM in the premises) and generally prefer a pizza with a bit thicker of crust I do enjoy a thin crust pie from time to time. Based on the recommendation of my New Yorker friend we ended up at Grimaldi's.
We were able to get in with no wait on a Monday around 12:30. This place does not serve slices, but lucky for us we were meeting a cousin for a sit down lunch. The menu is pretty basic so we were able to put in an order quickly – a large regular pizza with pepperoni and sausage. The pizza came out fairly quickly and we were ready to dig in. 3 people were splitting this pizza which, when it came out, looked big but, with being such a thin crust, was no match for our appetites. Really, it felt more like a moderately-sized mid-day snack as opposed to a full meal. I thought the fresh mozzarella and the basil really made the pizza taste that much better and, while I would have liked more cheese on the pizza, they did not skimp on the other toppings.
We left with a tab under $30 with tip which for good food isn't too bad. While I'll never be totally sold on thin crust pizza I am totally sold on Grimaldi's.
My wife and I ate here because we were walking by and I was like I've never had Grimaldi's before because that line in Brooklyn always looked so damn long. I said why not give it a shot. I've never really been big on brick over pizza because I always felt like it was expensive compared to a delicious New York City style slice of pizza for $2.75. Here's a pizza that's like the size of 3 and a quarter slices and it cost almost 20 bucks. Well we were hungry that day so I bit the bullet.
I'm happy to say that I was thoroughly pleased with the brick oven pizza that we shared. We got a margherita pizza with mushrooms and sausage, two of our favorite toppings. The crust was nice and crispy. The sauce was well balanced. The mozzarella tasted like quality cheese. This is now my standard for a brick oven pizza.
Now just to be clear I still think brick oven pizza is a relatively expensive pizza. And a plain old pepperoni slice of New York style pizza still tastes better to me. This is just different and I appreciate it more.
Also, we ordered the Caesar salad as an appetizer. I don't know what type of Caesar dressing they used but it was like crack. We couldn't stop eating it. The large think slices of parmesan cheese on top were also so much better than grated parmesan. You could taste the delicious saltiness in every bite. The salad was even over dressed but we didn't care. We were glad it was over dressed. I wanted to lick the plate when it was finished.
Nice pizza, crispy bottom NY style. Came here with a few of my workmates. We ordered 2 large – which was kinda a bit too big for our party but not massively.
This establishment is within an old church, and take no reservation – cash only.
Fresh pizza dough that was amazing- toppings were ok too – one of the better pizza I've tried in NYC.
They don't sell beer/alcohol and you can't BYOB too.
Growing up in Brooklyn, it's a shame that I'd never tried Grimaldi's under the bridge, so I came here with a friend for a lunch break. Service was okay but the pizza came really quick – cash only, mind you.
Pizza was perfect NY style – crispy bottom and flat, with delicious toppings on top (we got mushrooms on the full pie, sundried tomatoes on half, and sausage on the other half). We managed to finish a large (for a few extra dollars, why not???) and were perfectly full – mind you, my friend and I tend to have large appetites.
Overall, pizza and atmosphere were good, and the fresh mozzarella was a nice touch, but the pie was lacking in sauce in some places. My friend said the original Grimaldi's is better, but this was a nice facsimile!
I mean, it's good pizza, but despite the hype I wouldn't even say it makes it to the top 5. Very filling, but crust is a bit crunchy/tough. Sauce could be better if it was a little sweeter. The small pie is the perfect size for two people. I really like the ambiance! The red and white checkered tablecloths remind me of a cozy Italian restaurant, and it feels very secretive because it's hidden in a church. This is definitely not a fancy place but unfortunately you can't just casually walk in here. I've been wanting to come here for a long time but you have to plan your trip. You can't get individual slices and you must pay in cash. That means you need to bring at least one other person and you have to have cash on you. Tables are seated very close together as well. Of course I'd come back here because it's probably the best pizza in the neighborhood, but unfortunately I can't come waltzing in here by myself looking for a quick slice.
Super overhyped pizza. It was good but not must-get good. Me and two friends got the regular large 18" pizza with Italian sausage, sweet peppers and mushroom. Total was $26.25 which isn't bad split by 3 ppl.
Also not sure if this is a regular thing but their AC was not on/broken in the middle of a summer evening. It gets WARM in there!!!!!!! Everyone was fanning themselves.
This is supposedly the best pizza in New York, and it's really really good but I'm not sure if it's the best.
We ordered a regular pizza with pepperoni, onions, mushroom, and extra mozzarella. Toppings were each $2: some premium toppings were a bit more. It didn't really seem like that much extra mozzarella, but I don't know what it's like with the regular amount. The pepperoni wasn't distributed that evenly among slices, but it was probably my favorite topping.
Cash only and the service wasn't good. They also didn't give us change and just assumed we were tipping them the rest. That just isn't professional. We would have tipped it, but it's just customary to ask regardless. The waiters had some attitude and just acted like they didn't want to be there.
Totally delicious. I found this place as a top TEN pizza in NY. It was pretty empty when my party and I went in on a cold Tues. night – this was awesome! I've heard about the line in Brooklyn. It was nice not having a wait. The manager was very friendly and even let my party and I move to another table after getting a bit cold at a table by the window. The place began to crowd as we were there and it was still pretty roomy. When the pizza came out it was nice and fresh/ warm. I also really liked that you can see where the pizza is being made. Anyway, the pizza we got was hall pepperoni and half extra cheese, and the only complaint was that the cheese was not very cheesy. It seemed more like grated parmesan cheese and another more hearty cheese would have worked possibly better. Finally, the only set back – no visa! Bring cash or borrow from your neighbor. Other than that, a fan.
