Not a fan of huge workday lunches, unless the boss is paying, so I went with a Greek Panini here.. The good.. It was filling, a full plate contained the panini and a side salad. After eating, I was felt satisfied but not stuffed. Panini filling was excellent, perfect blend of flavors, with melted feta.. The salad was a nice addition, since I really wasn't expecting it. Now for the peculiar. The bread/wrap, not bad, but rather, was not what I expected. Most panini I've partaken of, use a flat bread, like naan or a thick wrap.. Chewy, and doughy, that gets a nice grilled texture and char in the panini grill. The bread used here was like a cracker. I'd call this a 'melt' or something, but not panini. I'll try them again when in the area, but go for a wrap of sandwich..
I have been here five times — once a month since September. I went here because it looked like a cool cafe, and I'm all for supporting the little guy. Grind exceeded my expectations. Here's how:
Ambiance:
Amazing — dim lighting, quiet (even when there are people), and warm in winter and comfortable in warmer months. Nice, low music that allows one to study. The employees talk nicely to each other which makes me feel more at home. There's a really nice upstairs where you can sit — very unique to Brooklyn (reminds me of a San Francisco cafe). Middle of the day crowd are mostly moms out for lunch. Night crowd includes dates (great date idea) and young married couples.
Food:
The chocolate chip sugar free and regular muffins are amazing (they will even warm it up for you). They have sugar free/regular hazelnut and french vanilla syrup that you can add to your coffee. I once ordered a tuna melton a baguette. They suggested it on a panini because it tastes better, so I got it, but didn't really like it. Tuna had celery in it, which I feel they should inform people about. Another time I tried the "lemonana" (mint+lemon+ice+sugar) but didn't like.
Service:
The owner is a really warm guy, and provides excellent service. Twice, however, an employee told me they'd bring my food over but never did…I had to come over. Still, I came back and the service was great. We ordered dinner for four and the owner didn't charge for extra bread.
Price:
Drinks are decently priced. $1.50 for cold bottled drinks and $2-2.50 for coffee. You can ask them for extra ice and they'll gladly give it to you. Soups and bagels are also decently priced. Bagels are okay — they taste a bit generic.
Overall:
Great place, very relaxing. The employees here do EVERYTHING with a smile. When I pass this place , I always want to go in. Service and prices are great, and employees make me and my company feel wanted.
