  1. This has got to be the cleanest grocery store in all of Manhattan I went here early in the morning for some entamins cookies for the office and they had them!

  2. I don't buy groceries here that often but I come here just about every single day (esp. during the wk) for the Chock Full O' Nuts counter.  As Mike B. said, the staff knows me and my order (decaf Americano, iced unless it's positively frigid out), and I'm tight with Latisha who's usually there wkday mornings.  Latisha takes great care of me and I return the favor with a five star review.

  3. The last several months there have been big improvements here. It has become a much better store. Everything seems to be stocked better, they are hardly ever sold out of anything anymore. The store is very clean.

Management seems genuinely concerned with any issue and the deal with it right away. All the employees seem very friendly, it has become a good store to shop in.

Somethings are priced high, but in many areas I have noticed lower pricing.

Should also mention that the since the Food Emporium across 3rd Avenue has closed, this store has really risen to the occasion. Bravo!

  4. Doesn't reflect strongly that the biggest draw to Gristedes is an Amazon Locker.

Kara, the Amazon Locker, has been a godsend to an inhabitant of a doorman-less walkup awaiting packages.  To its credit, Gristedes has more liberal hours than Fairway, making packages available late into the night.

Just don't try to buy anything perishable.  Made the mistake of trying to save a trip to 2nd Avenue and bought a dozen Gristedes Eggs.  What I thought was just the moisture of condensation ended up representing the whites of a dozen eggs – they'd frozen in the display, and I was the proud owner of a package of useless eggs.

Milk, too, is often at or beyond the sell-by date.

One bright point might be the growler tap at the front of the store, just yards from Kara.  Maybe they haven't figured this out yet, but by neglecting to charge a deposit on growler bottles, might represent the best deal in town.

  5. let's make this short and get straight to brass tacks: pricing is okay. the store itself is clean, and fairly large. standard Gristedes, I suppose.

however, I am bumping them up a star because of the Chock Full of Nuts on the ground floor (the supermarket proper is in the basement). their coffee is pretty good (get the hazelnut coffee!) and the service is genuinely friendly. they recognize my girl and don't even need to ask her order because she goes here often enough. yeah buddy!

  6. Horrible smells, horrible quality, horrible staffers, and horrible pricing. Overall, yep you guessed it…horrible.

My biggest grip with this place is that they routinely fail to take expired products off the shelves. So if you don't pay attention, you can get a week past expiration container of cottage cheese, or a six month past expiration can of garbanzo beans. The listless staff that sashay around should be making sure that old food isn't being stocked on shelves. But you get the feeling that they just can't be bothered. I guess you can't blame them…but what about the management? How the heck do they let their stores get so bad? It's amazing.

I often wonder how this chain is still in business with all the other halfway decent to great supermarkets in the area. For Pete's sake… at the very least…walk across the street to the Food Emporium, it's not nearly as abominable. Or better yet, take a walk down to Trader Joe's or maybe Whole Foods and get yourself some good quality food.

This could be one of the worst possible places to shop in New York. In general, this chain in particular has always been problematic; the Department of Health has been all over them for repeated violations.

I implore you to not patronize these scoundrels of the grocery industry, with their appalling attitude toward the local community. Shop at a place where the customer is respected and appreciated by way of good quality groceries, fair prices, and a clean environment. You can find lots of good places with a bit of effort.

  7. Good selection here but damn is some of the gear here expensive. The layout is also a little awkward. A decent local option but if I lived in the area I would probably do large shopping trips elsewhere.

  8. A bit more upscale than the Gristede's by my apartment, this place looks classier than it really is.

Prices are high ($6 for a box of oatmeal…yikes!) but it's convenient and pretty well stocked.

For being as small as it is, they've got a ton of products crammed in there and it's pretty clean.

Staff has always been friendly.   When I'm on the east side and need something from the grocery, I choose this place over the nearby D'Agostinos.
