  1. My boyfriend and I have been waiting to try Grotto for a while and when we saw the groupon we decided to go. We made a reservation on a Monday for 8pm, but arrived a little earlier than that and we were seated right away. The restaurant is very modern chic with a busy bar/front section and a quieter dinning room. We sat in the front at a corner booth which was really nice and spacious.
As soon as we sat down we were greeted with the choice of sparkling or flat water as well as bread and olive oil, which was delicious by the way. I order a glass of Pinot Grigio which was a very generous pour and a huge glass.
For appetizers we got the Caesar salad and the cold antipasto. The antipasto was great portion size and had a good variety of meats, cheese, and peppers. In regards to the Caesar salad it was good, but had an extremely strong anchovy taste, so if you don't like to see or taste your anchovies I would suggest you do not get the Caesar salad. For our entrees I ordered grilled chicken with steamed asparagus and my boyfriend ordered the gnocchi with broc rabe and sausage. Both of our dishes were excellent, I tried my boyfriends as the gnocchi were cooked perfectly. The only reason for the four stars rather than five was because of the $21 charge for the grilled chicken entree.
Overall it was a great experience, our waitress was very sweet and really attentive to us. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was fun and relaxing. We'll definitely come back.

  2. Nice family owned restaurant in Bay Ridge with nice ambiance. Came on Sundy at 6PM and the bar was filled up. There's a back room dining area with a warm, dim and intimate atmosphere while the front was more casual and bright. If you like fresh breeze, there's tables by the outside.

SERVICE : Right when I got seated I see a bartender accidentally spilled ice all over the counter and on to a gentlemen,  waitress made loud commotions by dropping cups or whatever. My waitress forgot to even inform me what was the special until I had to end up asking about it myself… Also stood at the front hostess stand for about a good 15-20mins in clear view sight until I finally got acknowledgement. Okay so the service can have room for improvement but the food was delicious!

FOOD : A MUST order if they have it on the specials is squid ink fettuccine with seafood in a garlic cream sauce! Wow this was delicious! The cream sauce was nice and light, squid ink fettuccine was cooked perfectly and most of all the dish was very generous with the pasta and seafood serving. I had about 4 nice size shrimps and scallops with plenty of lobster !! My boyfriend had chicken marsala which was okay. For appetizer we shared a calamari which was also good, lightly breaded with a tiny kick to the marinara sauce.

Over all, 3.5/5 stars. I'll definitely be back for that squid ink fettuccine dish and to try the rest of the pasta as well as their dessert since we didn't have time for dessert.

**BTW; if you happen to be reading this today.. There's a good deal on Groupon that ends today(5/22)… So I think you should buy it, it's worth checking out the place yourself!**

  3. I saw an awesome Groupon deal (it's still available) and decided to try the food out. I have previously been here for a drink at the bar and I loved the atmosphere. It has a mixture of a sports bar (giant televisions everywhere) and a casual place you go with friends but not super fancy.

The bartender was wonderful and this place is not stingy on the wine and gives a really big pour in a large glass. For about $9 I left with a slight buzz, so I was happy.

This time around I decided to use the Groupon in which we ordered a steak and some spaghetti bolognese. To be honest when the steak first came out, I thought it was a burnt rotisserie chicken. I have never quite seen a steak in that shape. It came out in a large circular mass. I was slightly confused because I have ate a lot of steaks in the past that are always flat. This steak was rolled up and folded in half. It was ok, nothing extremely special but I did really enjoy the pasta. The bread also came out cold with some dipping sauce.

The service was quite slow and took a while for the food to come out. It also took us a long time to just receive our water. I would also recommend sitting in the front instead by the windows if the weather permits it. We sat in the back and it was quite dark, it needed some candles for each table.

Overall, good prices and large portions but the service was lacking when ordering food. The previous time I went to the bar, I had no problem at all. I agree with someone's else review this place that this place is a 3.5 stars in my book. It has potential, but just hasn't gotten there yet.

  4. When my family and I first walked in, we were surprised because the front where the bar is was extremely loud and dim but then we were led to the back dining area, which was very spacious and much quieter. There is definitely a lot of seating here so the 7 of us were seated promptly and the friendly waitresses took our orders with no issues. The huge TV screens were a big plus since we were able to watch the Oscars while there. All the pasta we ordered was delicious, especially my spaghetti that came with the shrimp parm and my sister's rigatoni. Unfortunately, A did not like his steak at all but I didn't get to try it. If we needed a good Italian restaurany for a bit party again, I would come here.

  5. Nice atmosphere when you walk in, a bar and a few tables. Go into the back of the restaurant and there are many more tables, along with a few TVs for the sports lovers. Elegant ambiance, and great service.

Started off with the calamari, and it was really good. Came with a lightly spiced sauce that was perfect. Bit on the pricey side ($15).

    On to the entrees..

I had a rigatoni with sautéed eggplant, cherry tomatoes, in a spiced tomato sauce. Pretty damn good. Definitely add a protein, I'd recommend the shrimp, which was grilled to perfection.

My mother ordered the fettucine with garlic sauce and grilled shrimp. She enjoyed it.

Dessert was a tartufo which was eh, ok.

This was a good meal. Will come back.

  6. Get the Shrimp parm!  old fashioned martini – Jeff's special (off the menu) $12 worth every penny. Mixology status !! Every appetizer is a must try !

  7. When I heard my wife's friend was celebrating her birthday at Grotto, I readied my towel and speedo!  When I heard this was said friend's family's Italian restaurant interiorly designed to replicate the facade of a romanticized cave I decided to leave my towel at home……. The front 1/3 of the restaurant appears as an upscale sports bar, stocked with liquor, pub tables and several large LCDs with MLB on the program.  The next section has several Grotto-style semi-enclosed tables ideal for couples or small groups.  Lastly the rear of the restaurant provides space for large groups.

My experience here was in context of a large group (15+) dinner we shared family style of random selections curated by the chef.  Hot/cold antipasti, pasta with cherry tomato sauce/pecorino cream sauce, pan seared salmon etc prepared as components (e.g. filet mignon minus the sides.) of their more conclusive menu offering  Despite our group preparation being muted compared to their standard menu, the experience of quality and freshness of ingredients spoke volumes.  Similarly, service was attentively frequent and friendly.

I would gladly make a return visit to sample the menu which appears to couple traditional Italian cuisine with modern, eclectic touches.
