  1. I'll start with the positive: When I used to live in the East Village Gruppo was my go-to place to order pizza from. Better than average by far, always delicious.

Keeping that in mind, and the fact that I love lasagna, I recently got the lasagna lunch special to see if it was as good as the pizza. I normally don't order lasagna from places known mainly for pizza, but they had lots of other pasta and other dishes too, seemed like there was potential. Sadly, it was the most unspectacular lasagna I have ever eaten. I had a few bites before giving up and just eating the rest of my (good) salad and bread. The pasta in the lasagna was overdone and mushy, the sauce was too sweet, and it was just overall really bland – no spice, no texture, no love. I didn't want to waste the large chunk leftover. I wondered what the chances were that someone would offer me some marijauna, I would smoke it, and then become hungry enough to eat it. Carrying it back to the train I actually hoped a homeless person would approach me so I could give it to them. No such luck. When I got home, I offered it to my neighbor. He didn't want it. So now it sits in my fridge, haunting me. Maybe tonight I'll use it to bait the rat trap outside…. Overall, Gruppo is awesome – just stick with the pizza. Though the lasagna might be kid friendly, who knows?

  2. Gruppo's website is "gruppothincrust.com", and they are not lying. I like all pizza, I don't discriminate, but this was a tad too thin for me. Certain bites were so crunchy it felt like I was eating a cracker. BUT, I still give Gruppo a solid 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for the delicious flavor of the pizza.

Everyone raves about the Shroomtown pizza, so we tried it and were not disappointed. The super thin crust carries a heavy load of mushrooms and of course, truffle oil. Normally my beef with mushroom pizza is that it becomes too rich and creamy  and almost too oily with just mushrooms and truffle oil, but this one felt more balanced because they also included marinara sauce so there's some nice acidity there as well.

We also had the kale and manchego salad, which was a nice opener to the dish.

All in all, a very solid and unique pizza choice in the east village, as long as you like super thin crust!

  3. Its arrrrrrrrrright. I used to enjoy this place a lot more when they were in their smaller location. Call me crazy but I think their pizza tasted better. Although it is still good, it has gone down just ONE notch. If you want a good thin crust go here..

  4. The best margarita pizza in the lower east side that I've had. My party went on a Friday evening around 5 and this  place was dead. That's ok, I definitely won't complain about a quiet spot. We were pleasantly surprised by the happy hour special which consisted of buying 3 beers and getting a 16" pizza free, it was the highlight for sure. Our waiter was pretty friendly and explained how to get the most bang for our buck during our happy hour experience. Apparently you do not have to get a pitcher you just need to buy a certain amount of beer or wine to get the free pie. The rest of my party thought this was the some of the best pizza they have had period, I wouldn't go that far but I was the odd man out not raving about it.

  5. I'm a Neapolitan Style Pizza Fan. This is a great twist on the Neapolitan style. The crust is slightly thinner yet much more crisp. Due to this it can support a little more weight than a traditional coal fired slice can.

My wife and I love wine and they have some great specials. You can get a free pie with a full price bottle and they also offer half price wine during happy hour. Their ingredients are fresh and delicious.

I have one complaint. I love, love, love a roasted red pepper and sausage pizza. However they used a sweet sausage instead of the hot sausage on the pizza I ordered. It's as much my fault as theirs and they offered to comp me when I complained. However, the half price wine was flowing, the servers were extremely personable and helpful, and the atmosphere was cool so I called it square.

I made sure to triple specify hot sausage on my pizza next time and it was off the chain… and the hook. This place is the best!

  6. Take it for what it is. Don't like thin crust? Then don't come to a thin crust place and say that it's overcooked. This is a fairly niche style of pizza, and if you dont like it, good thing there's a thicker crust for you on every street corner for the next 10 miles in any direction.

This isn't one of those pizza places where you're going to feel gross after eating it. Nothing is greasy, and nothing is heavy (even the meaty pizzas). All of the ingredients on these pizzas have a purpose, and I haven't had a pizza that wasn't amazing from here.

Their salads are mind blowing, and I rarely if ever say that about salad. You can tell that whomever made the menu REALLY cares about flavor and texture. Like their pizzas, every single ingredient has a purpose and brings something to the dish.

The only thing is that this place could have more people working there. They were extremely nice and helpful, but I came around dinner time on a sunday and could tell that they were a bit understaffed. Regardless, this is my favorite pizza in NYC. Is it historic, traditional, popular? No, but if you're going to like something just because it is old or the first then I assume you only ride in Model T Fords?

  7. Oh Wow! Great thin crust pizza!!

I tried the shroomtown and the meat lovers. Shroomtown with marinaded mushrooms and truffle oil, amazing! The meat lovers sausage and pepperoni were delicious. The balance of sauce, cheese, and toppings was perfect. The house salad was also surprisingly good, marinaded mushrooms, olives, and a great vinaigrette.

  8. Really fantastic thin-crust pizza bar/restaraunt. Ambiance is great, servers are great, food is delicious and reasonably priced. I think I have tried just about every pizza on the menu and have yet to stand corrected as this being my first choice for sit-down and economical thin crust pizza. Great place for a intimate date, or a small to medium sized group. They don't take reservations, but being a little off the beaten path on Ave B i've never had a problem with getting a table. The only other place in the city I have found to be better is Adrienne's on stone street, but the experiences are very different – this being more casual, laid back and cozy, while Adrienne's is a bit more contemporary.
