The thing that caught my friend's attention was the enticing and rich aroma emitted from this store…and we just had to come in and try the food here. This palace serves authentic Venezuelan cuisine as is just a short walk fork the Courtelyou Road train station.
I settled for the chicken and rice lunch special while my friend had the steak over rice. The first thing that caught our attentions when we first dug into our dishes was the seasoning for the rice. It was amazing. The dish was petty good overall and I really enjoyed it. The only downside is that they only give 2 pieces of chicken. They make up for that by throwing a few pieces of plantains. My friend enjoyed his dish but I noticed that his steak was little on the tender side. So tender that he had trouble chewing it and cutting it with his knife. Lastly, I washed my meal down with a fruit shake made from real fruits that they blended up.
Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and I'll be back whenever I'm in the area.
This small Venezuelan take out restaurant is a fun addition to Cortelyou Road. The menu may not be extensive but the arepas and empanadas are delicious (although a bit on the greasy side). The place just opened so take out is a bit spotty (sometimes they won't even offer it) and it can be next to impossible to get through on the phone during the evening rush but this hopefully will improve as they settle into a rhythm.
Guacamaya is a neat little Venezuelan takeout shop near the corner of Cortelyou and Coney Island Ave. Their menu consists primarily of arepas, sandwiches, empanadas, and other Venezuelan street food.
We split the chicken & cheddar arepa and the cachapas with cheese. I would recommend both of them with a preference for the cachapas. It was interesting to try a cuisine which is founded on corn meal. The sauces were good compliments for the dishes, but I would have loved to have a green sauce like a chimichuri or a salsa verde.
I would advise ordering ahead. The takeout wasn't as quick as I had hoped.
Guacamaya is a small Venezuelan eatery, really meant for take out. There are only three bar stools cramped in between the window and counter.
The staff is friendly and welcoming but take way too long in delivering the food. We ordered a chicken and cheddar cheese arepa and a cachapa with cheese. The arepa had a mealy taste akin to grits. The arepa bread melts in your mouth. The cachapa was corn meal-based. Its flavor was slightly too overwhelmed by the char. I also tried their passion fruit drink which was very fresh but somewhat watery.
I would rate this place 3.5 stars.
