This place is great. This place is really everything you would like in a brewery and I'm so glad a place like this is in the area. It's like a nice warehouse inside with large tables and plenty of chairs. There's a mix of families and friends of all ages hanging out here. The beers are quite cheap at around $5-8 per glass and it's only $15 for a flight of 6 beers with decent size portions. The beers are all extremely good with a large variety. The cherry beer was my favorite. They have some food options too like empanadas, pretzels, etc. but I didn't try any of these. Overall, I very highly recommend Gun Hill Brewing Company and since I'll definitely be coming back and recommending it to all of my friends!
Living in the Bx has opened my horizons to new and incredible establishments in this borough. This is one of those locations.
A bar held in a garage setting of a brewery is the perfect low key spot for a laid-back weekend activity. For only $5 you can try various craft beers. There was also food being sold. According to my bf there was a food truck last time he visited, therefore it's save to say that they team up with vendors to provide the crowd yummy food.
There was a DJ that played awesome beat and even had the crowd dancing. (Yes, there is a small open space for fellow dancers). I'd say that if I were to make a slight modification to this place, it'd be the location of the speakers. The speaker was directly in front of the benches making it extremely hard to hold a conversation with people sitting right across from me. Or maybe lower down the volume? Either or, I'd say keep the music but also take into account that people are trying to socialize.
Overall, great place! look forward to visiting soon.
It may be out in the Bronx, but I think l found more beers I like at Gun Hill than at Brooklyn Brewery. Sunday's seem to be a slow day, with only about 7 other people in the brewery with us. But on the bright side you're not wrestling with others to refill your beer or find a table to sit.
Food choices nearby are limited, but there are options if you need to order!
In the back you'll find potato chips and games to play as you drink your beer. Don't be afraid to bring your own games and make a day of it!
My bf and I were in the area and decided to check Gun Hill Brewing out, especially after noticing the groupon, which by the way has confusing terminology. Initially, it was refused to be honored to our expectations by the bartender on shift when we arrived. It's not even worth buying with the way it's written now (one sampler for two people– please tell me how that's logical w/ the $14 price), so we opted out and got two regular flights for $9 each instead.
All the beers were nice and light. I'm not typically a fan of stouts but this was really well balanced and I didn't mind it at all. Strong preference for the Pom Wheat- lightly flavored but really crisp and enjoyable. We also got a cheese pretzel which wasn't bad at all for $3. They even offer free bags of chips!! How can you complain about that.
They have less tables and a lot more standing room in what's essentially a warehouse, but this definitely adds to the cool and relaxing atmosphere. It wasn't too crowded for a Saturday afternoon, but there seemed to be a lot of local walk-ins and I know I would be one of them if I was closer.
When we were ready to leave and pay, I asked a new bartender about the explanation for their groupon deal– guess we weren't the only ones confused and he actually ended up honoring it for us! Love that good service.
Support local brew!! I grew up in the neighborhood of the brewery so I am really proud of it. The beer is excellent – recommend the IPA, Red Coat, Gold, and the Frosted Hop (cold season)! Go now and drink.
Pretty chill place to come to with co-workers. I had the flight for $12.. really dig the ipa and the black waves. You can order food for delivery here or order a $2 pretzel that they will heat up for you (not worth it). Music was awesome – loved the throw back r&b. Place also has karaoke at the bar!
Within the past few years craft breweries have made a huge resurgence, especially in NYC. Gun Hill is one of the handful that just opened and it was the last one for my fiance and I to visit due to it's location fairly far from us. Gun Hill Brewery is named after the nearby Gun Hill road. The brewery's style is based off of the history behind the road's name. As per Wikipedia:
"During the Revolution, the road was an important artery over which the British and the Colonists fought. In January 1777, the colonists brought a cannon to the top of a hill and fired at the British. The hill, now inside Woodlawn Cemetery was locally called Gun Hill afterwards. The road was known as Kingsbridge Road (part of the original Boston Post Road) until 1875, when it was renamed Gun Hill Road"
Their amazing styling is not limited to the interior of the open industrial type space but also to their logo, coasters, and apparel. As far as the space goes, if you've been to Singcut or LIC Beer Project (both in Queens) it's very similar. It's an open space with the bar off to the left the brewing facility off in the back to the right, and an large space by the garage door type opening full of picnic tables. They offer free bags of Cape Cod chips and do have hot soft pretzels for sale. Service was great and we had a great time here.
Onto the beer. When we went there were 6 beers on tap. Pints are $5-6 and flights (six 5 oz glasses) were $12. We enjoyed that the flight board was marked and they had a sheet explaining each one. Their American Wheat, Indian Field Pale Ale, and Gold Session Ale were all extremely similar not only in looks but taste as well. They were tasty and light but nothing I would go out of my way to order. My fiance favored their IPA and I really enjoyed their Pomegranate Wheat which didn't taste like pomegranate to me but did have a subtle sweetness and a great overall flavor to it. We also enjoyed the Thunder Dog Stout but as we've very new to enjoying a full bodied stout we opted to go with our other favorites this time.
This is a great space, albeit a bit of a hike from anywhere but the north Bronx. The beers, especially the void of light, were great. They have a small selection of empanadas and vegetarian patties. They also let you bring your own food in as well. They have a few board games. Overall, this place is worth the trek and also a great place to hang out on a weekend afternoon. I would suggest figuring out a food plan before going and bringing a game or other fun activity to do while trying the wide selection of beers.
