If I'm in this area, I end up going to the H mart Ridgefield which is much bigger than Hanyang. A couple of years ago, this supermarket went through some serious remodeling and have transformed. But it still has limited grocery products and therefore I always end up going to the neighboring supermarket. However, I stopped by this mart (first time in almost 3 years!) because I was coming to the plaza to but Kimchi at the store located next to Hanyang.
Hanyang was pretty empty, and hence plenty of parking spaces. In fact, out of the dozen times I've shopped at Hanyang, the parking lot was never full more than 1/3 of the lot.
The supermarket is still pretty clean but it could definitely be cleaner. No one would believe that this place looked almost as new 2-3 years ago right after the remodeling.
I bought some processed foods (cookies) because the "fresh" groceries didn't look too appealing (dull colors). I ended up buying 2 sushi rolls on sale for $10 because it was 6:30 p.m., heavily raining outside, and there were still plenty of rolls left. But the rolls were mushy and watery – it was not worth $5 per roll. I originally wanted to get one of the sashimi plates with the sticker price of $30 because the freshness of the fishes stood out from the rest, but the owner said it wasn't going to be on sale. They probably weren't going to sell all the sashimi plates that evening, so my suspicion is that they will continue to sell the sashimi plates until the next day, but I really hope they throw the leftovers out on a daily basis.
As soon as I walked in, there were samples. At the end of every aisle, there were samples. What more can I ask for? I anticipate my next visit to come grocery shopping while making sure I walk thru every single aisle to get a bite of food. They even have a sushi bar, and a dumpling kitchen inside the supermarket!
Every shelf was stocked. Lots of staff walking around for help. Look for their Red Friday Deals!
Basically by the time I pay I have already had a full meal. Not even done yet, wait till you go to their mini food court next door……oh boy.
I saw a review here that stated that the foods stayed on the shelves too long because everyone goes to H-Mart. This was likely true back then, but I think that many patrons have shifted their business over to H&Y and Hannam Chain stores more recently. There's more H-Marts in the Fort Lee and nearby areas than Starbucks, but it doesn't alleviate the zoo-like conditions of the one in Linwood Plaza. We now come here more often to escape the stampede, especially during H Mart's 1+1 days (on the 11th, buy 1 get 1 free deal day of every month). I don't get everything I need from here, but the freshly made tofu is amazing – THAT ALONE brings me here on a weekly basis. It is true that on some of my visits, the produce wasn't that fresh, but for produce, I go to Whole Foods anyway, so that hasn't bothered me.
