I've always been a fan of Korean restaurants mainly because of their attention to creating a pleasant dining experience. When shopping for Korean groceries, the same can be said for H-mart.
H-mart is the opposite of the no-frills Asian supermarkets. Their supermarkets are usually brightly lit, clean and organized with neatly stocked shelves.
Weekends are probably the best time to shop because of the free food samplings (items that are on sale that week). I should mention that their sample servers are polite and do have good personal hygiene (like not clipping their nails in public).
Some of my favorite items to purchase are their fish products (raw tuna and salmon which are very fresh), seaweed and frozen kimchi dumplings. Some of their products are a bit more expensive than other supermarkets so it's better to know what you buying (i.e. non-Korean or western food).
For providing a good food shopping and tasting experience, I'd give H-mart four Yelp stars…
Yes, great place to shop, just make sure you try to avoid weekends after 11 a.m. or come super late, like 9 p.m.
Shelves are well-stacked and there is a very clean feeling to this place. It's no wonder why it's almost always packed, even on weeknights! There are also free tastings of interesting items during weekends.
The parking lot is small. It also gets very dark, disorderly, and crowded, with both vehicles and pedestrians. I call it "Ordered Chaos."
I opt for the Chinese supermarkets for Chinese vegetables but for Korean products, I come here. It's also super convenient in the sense that I don't have to go all the way to downtown Flushing for basic items.
Prices are higher than most, though. Be sure to shop around.
This supermarket sometimes does not stock items that other markets have. I couldn't find baking soda last night, it was weird.
I love this place, the prices are good, the fruit and veggies are always fresh. The fish market has great bargains and wjen it comes to the variety of fish available they have a vast selection of fish, shellfish and frozen items that most American super markets dont carry. Clearly they cater to the Korean market, it also pays to get H mart card for the discounts and special offerings. The parking situation is tough, avoid going to this location on sunday and if you do go on a sunday go when they open. I am not Korean, so i only wish the staff was better equipted with more fluent english speaking staff. You have to try the bakery and the hot food area as well, both have ready cooked food for take out.
This is the nicest HMart I've been to.
Specifically for the food court on the side, it is the bomb diggity. Portions for price is the most reasonable I've seen for Korean food.
Regular kimchi soondubu is like $8.99 which is unheard of. That's like $3 cheaper than BCD, and you're not paying for tip. I really like their yukkaejang, which is like a shredded beef spicy soup. That is only about $9, and the bowl is huge. You could eat it for two meals if you portion it right.
Eating here is like the people who have discovered it are keeping the secret to themselves. It's like everyone eating here had this mutual, unspoken look of solidarity at each other to not share this goodness with the outside yelp world.
This is my current favorite place for good cheap Korean food.
This is one of the newest HMarts in the area. It's neat and clean. Prices are fair. What I love about this HMart is that they have a food court in the front. It's nice to have a quick meal. They portion sizes bigger than what I'd expect from a Korean restaurant too. The vegetables/produce are nice and fresh and the have higher quality meats than other local grocery stores. I also really love the prepared cold foods in the front. It's a delicious easy quick bite to eat or snack when I'm home. There is also a bakery/cafe so you can get your coffee and cake fix on. A parking lot is available. It's a decent size but it can get filled quickly when is busy. Fresh seafood is located in the back of the store. Be sure to check when there are salesso you can get good seafood at a good price.
I come here occasionally for shrimp and other groceries. This market has fruits, veggies, and meat at an affordable price. It can be a little smelly in some of the aisles, but still an overall good market.
You can never go wrong by coming here! All their fruits, vegetables, and meats are always top notch. I especially love their pre-marinated meats and cooked foods section. Bonus part is that there is a Paris Baguette and a small korean food court on the side if you ever need dessert or a quick bite to eat. They have their own private parking lot but it usually filled, at any given time, try the bank side or regular street parking behind the building.
Is it weird that my main objective when going to hmart is getting the cooked food?
Honestly the food is usually consistent in taste compared to the food served at the hmart in great neck. My go to is usually the #16 beef lunch box: bulgogi, kimchi, radish kimchi, salad, rice, soup for $12 (used to be $10 so slight raise in price). Still a pretty good deal for what you get.
Sometimes they forget to pack certain items if you get take out so always double check your bags. Also if you get take out of the lunch boxes you get a free pack of roasted seaweed. Free water towards the back on the left hand side. Order at the register, pay, get your ticket and when they call your number just pick up your meal.
This place can get crowded, especially during "rush" hours but if you stay to eat you will get more food than if you get take out.
