Great things to pick up here:
-fresh fruit
-Korean soft drinks
-Korean alcohol (soju, makeolli, plum wine)
-cookware (tin pot for ramen?)
-frozen meat (for kbbq, seafood, etc)
Overall, great selection here, produce and meat seems very fresh. There's also some prepared food for your convenience. The NYC premium doesn't seem to be too high here
Interesting store but it can't quite match the splendor of the Edison NJ suburban store. It is pretty clean and there is a wide variety of Asian products. It's a good addition to 32 Streets Korea town vibe.
Who doesn't love H Mart? It has all of your Korean goodies.
Was this place always here? I dunno but THANK GOD it exists. Coming from San Francisco to New York City, it's been hard to find an Asian mart to cook the foods of my people! Still, nothing compares to my city by the bay in terms of variety and prices…
It's a very narrow shop with decently spacious aisles enough for one and a half people. I'm impressed with how modern, clean and bright it is inside! Despite coming at very busy hours, the check out is always super fast.
I love that there's a large area of fresh produce and and a pretty decent selection of Asian snacks. They don't have everything but GOOD ENOUGH! Despite being cheaper than normal grocery markets, it's still not Chinatown cheap.
H Mart is the grocery store equivalent of walking into a Target only needing 1 item, and walking out with 12 extra purchases. Ever since they moved across the street into their bigger location, my need to acquire more Korean groceries has grown exponentially. They have a great variety of items, and H-Mart seems to always have everything I want. They offer a wide selection of produce, meats, fish, banchans, frozen foods, and every variety of Spam you could ever imagine. I'm confident it will also serve as your one-stop-shop for all things Korean and Asian grocery related.
I love hmart. If you get nothing else from this review, just know I love hmart.
On my second visit, I noticed they added much more stuff here. I wandered around wanting more stuff than planed! There is so much in hmart; rice cookers, spices, rice cakes, daifuku, tteokbokki, Calpico, etc etc. ps: they added pepero. Anyway, the melona ice cream bars are a MUST!! I wish I brought a box tbh. It's tastes like honeydew bubble tea, without the boba of course.(actually better than honeydew boba tea) so many snacks and food, you'll never get bored. Depite it being packed with food, it's super clean and neat in here. The best part is…I don't have to travel all the way to Queens for it!! It's so conveniently located. I'll definitely be back. Especially for the melona ice cream. Yum.
Must admit – when I first came in I was disillusioned by the amount of Oscar Meyer and Kellogg's I was encountering. These familiar sights, coupled with an environment that's much cleaner, brighter, and well-organized than your average lower Manhattan Asian markets made me suspect I was in for disappointment.
Don't be fooled, though! Venture further back and you're in for a world or unorthodox culinary delights. All kinds of swimming creatures sold "au natural." A Russian roulette assortment of cookies and crackers to choose from with inscrutable yet exciting labels. Also, a wide array pf familiar brands given an Asian twist. Soft style green tea Oreos, anyone? How about honey cheddar Cheetos?
Lines may appear long but you'll make your way through fast thanks to the efficient checkout team. Only quibble is that prices seem a little high (the soft Oreos were found to set me back almost ten bucks, so I had to pass) but I don't doubt that they have high import fees to deal with.
Anyway, pay them a visit if you want a little escape from the mundane in midtown. Or if you've just been looking for a Pocky Mecca somewhere north of Canal Street!
This H Mart is small as supermarkets go if you are from Jersey but it's big for NY and even bigger if you are looking for specialty food from Korea, Japan, and China. Or just for Dumplings, Gyozas, Pot Stickers, Edamame, Tofu, this is the place.
Sometimes are just walk around the place just to look and sometimes I pick up something that's got me interested and I know I can't get at my regular market especially for the snacks like Japanese kit kats.
