Haiku

“Definitely recommend their naruto roll (rice less), white tiger roll, twin salmon roll, unicorn roll and passion roll.”

“One of the best sushi/ Pan-Asian spots in the NYC vicinity – definitely the best in Westchester.”

“I am especially impressed with the Pad Thai and the General Tso's Chicken, but I haven't had anything that wasn't good.”

  1. Not good (in my opinion).

    We tried:

Malaysian Curry with Tofu – mehhhh
    Pad Thai – mehhhh
Mango Curry with Tofu – turned out it was a plate of barely cooked mangos and tofu…FAIL

I asked for my dish to be medium spicy (Thai/Asian spices can sometimes be insanely hot so I was playing it safe).  When tried my food I thought I could still kick it up a notch so I asked the waitress for some hot sauce on the side.  She kind of freaked out and told me I should have just asked her to make it spicy when I ordered (ummm WTF!)

  2. this is really 3.5 I wish there were .5 options ha.
Anyhow unplanned celebration dinner with the parents.  I loved the decor and the town it is in.  The service was fast and the food was not inventive but well presented.  I really enjoyed the sweet potato roll and the white fish (dont kill me) dont remember the fish sushi.. it was very fresh.  Will be back if not by choice then by my mother's demand.

  3. So – this one was hard – some good things and some bad, and I landed on the "meh" side of fence.

Here's why:  there were SCALES in my sushi.  Little clear scales that made an awful CRUNCH sound as I bit into a slice of flounder as part of my Sushi Deluxe order.  This is a no-no.  Made me nervous for the rest of my meal that I was going to slice my gums on another sharp scale tucked in my rice.

Otherwise, this place has friendly service that kept our water glasses full and checked on us often.  The avocados are always perfectly ripe and not brown and pretty to look at on the avocado salad (great carrot dressing).  The sweet shrimp and uni are pretty fresh (varies by visit, once I had really fresh uni, once I had uni that was a little too strong in taste).

For its location this is a good deal for a quick sit down sushi dinner, just beware the scales…

  4. There are a number of Haikus in Westchester – I've been to the ones in Scarsdale and White Plains but last night was my first time dining at their Bronxville location.

The food at Haiku is good – it's fresh, tasty, and pretty consistent. The menu has a number of sushi, sashimi, and general Asian dishes. Last night we started with some shumai, gyoza, and Szechuan spicy wontons – all of which were great. For my main I had a combination of three rolls – spicy shrimp roll, shrimp avocado roll, and California roll. The rolls weren't up to par with what I've had at their sister locations, but was still good overall.

Aesthetically, this is my least favorite Haiku – it's a small restaurant with a light wood-tone color scheme. I much prefer the darker wood tones found at Scarsdale and White Plains- they speak to me more, plus those dining rooms are much roomier.

This place is good if you live in Bronxville since it's accessible, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here.

  5. Located in Bronxville, it's a quaint (but definitely enough seating) Asian fusion/sushi restaurant. There's parking available (meters). The restaurant seems to offer a variety of foods from soups to salads to appetizers to entrees and noodles to sushi. I went with two others who ordered from the Entree section (General Tso's and a shrimp dish). Both were presented nicely (reminiscent of P.F. Chang's presentation). One of my friends raved about the Seafood Soup. Apparently it's a must.

I decided to try the sushi. And it sure tasted Fresh! I especially liked the "Eel and Avacado" roll. The Spicy Tuna roll was also good. Ask for spicy mayo on the side if you want! The staff is friendly and service was prompt. We were not kept waiting too long. In fact, the waiter came by to pour the beer (from the bottle) into the glass for my friend. Pretty cool.

If I weren't from out of town, I'd definitely come back.

  6. I admit it, I really liked my bastardized Americanized sushi roll of shrimp tempura on the inside with lobster salad and tobiko on the outside. Frankly, it was delicious. My mom's fusion-y shrimp dish was pretty tasty, though it would have been nice if it had had some vegetables in there. Big menu with lots of options, running the gamut from sushi to Chinese to Thai-inspired. So perhaps the chefs are spread a little thinly, but it seemed like everything was competently done, and there's something for everyone.

  7. Great variety of not just sushi but Asian food, I was surprised to see Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and I think Thai on the menu.

Miso soup-yummy soft tofu, seaweed a little chewy, still yum.

Spicy tuna hand roll-fast crispy and delicious. Fresh fish, and spicy!

My boyfriend ordered the Sashimi Jalapeno, which was literally thin pieces of sashimi wrapped around strips of jalapeno, 4 pieces for $9.75, I'll pass.

But I rubbed it in and ordered the Sashimi appetizer, 8 pieces of fresh sashimi for the same price.

Green tea, fast. Water, faster, Thank you's and have a nice day which I like.  Simple eats, good eats.

  8. Came here on a Monday night at around 8:00 PM. There were a number of seats available, and it wasn't incredibly busy. Mind you, often times when I pass by, it's packed.

Ordered the spicy mango sauce with chicken (plus rice), along with the sesame crispy chicken. Sesame chicken was quite generic, the mango sauce chicken was kind of bad. Also, both dishes were supposed to be spicy, but neither was. Price for two dishes came to $30.

    Very underwhelming.
