This cart is just OK. I would say solid, but I would take a walk to King of Falafel any day over coming here.
First, the guys that work there are a bunch of unpleasant people. Go find out for yourself!
The food is solid. I like the bigger chunks of chicken instead of it being crazy shredded. That's a plus. The eggplant and fries in the rice plates are also pluses too. I think that's the only draw to this place really.
The mix plate over rice was $7.50. They never post prices at these places, so there you go! My buddy got his chicken over rice for $6.
Otherwise, again, a walk down the street will yield a much better experience.
I have been to many halal carts. Sammy's in Jackson Heights, Little Neck and Hillside in Floral Park, the popular 53rd and 6th, and numerous others, but this is honestly the best cart food I have ever had.
While other trucks rely on their white sauce for flavor, these guys actually cook the meat in the sauce and season it to give it a strong flavor. You don't have to douse your chicken and rice in buckets of white sauce just to make it taste good. The chicken itself is flavorful. I myself love white sauce so I usually douse it anyway. Their hot sauce is not too spicy and not too mild, and you can always ask for more.
Another plus is that the food isn't oily at all, making this a healthy option (as healthy as it gets for cart food). You can pick between yellow and brown rice, both which taste good. The lamb is also very flavorful and among the best I have tasted.
They add eggplants and french fries, which I think adds a unique combination to the already flavorful and aromatic chicken and rice.
The only thing I don't like about this cart is that they put large onion pieces in the salad, which is really annoying…I end up just tossing them to the side and not eating them. Also, it would be nice if they cut up the chicken pieces smaller.
The price is affordable, ranging from $5-7.50, depending on what you get. Drinks are not free. It closes at 9 PM so you can't go here if you're looking for a late night fix.
Overall, this is the most underrated but most delicious halal food cart food I have had and I highly recommend it.
One of the best halal food carts in Queens, maybe even NYC. Definitely in my personal Top 5. I finally tried it after smelling it from blocks away on my bike for months.
The key here, vegetables! Eggplant especially. No one does eggplant but these guys do. Lettuce and tomato are also fresh and crispy. Chicken and lamb are nice cuts of meat with great texture too but the vegetables make that difference. I've even seen some get a nice pepper on top.
Their white and hot sauces are also stand out. Theirs stood out to me from the many other carts spread out all over the boroughs. I'd like to think they make their own like The Halal Guys do and the others all buy from the same supplier, but who knows, whatever they're doing, it's totally worth it.
Yes yes yessss, stop by & get a gyro!!!! Try Kings of Falafel on 30th & Broadway too!!
Though I'm addicted to the mixed platter at the 53rd street halal cart because I prefer their sauce (the one at this halal cart is more like tahini), this is, by far, the tastiest halal cart chicken I have ever had. The chicken is tender and very flavorful, and the meal itself made all the tastier because they add delicious grilled eggplant, grilled onions and french fries to the platter. If you aren't in Astoria, a meal from this cart is most certainly worth the trip here. Come for the best halal meat you've ever tasted, stay and hang a while because Astoria is awesome!
I have been coming here off and on since I was in elementary school ( I'm 32 more lol). Altho I like the shishkabobs from Frankys better, this cart offers some good stuff. I'm not a fan of lamb but the seasoning is just right and I can't even tell the difference. I RECOMMEND the chicken over rice with everything. A mix of French fries, eggplant, onions tomatoes and lettuce is a great mix. Prices are decent
This is known to me & my boys as the sandwich spot!
The sandwiches always hits the spot they have been around for years, before halal became a overnight sensation… I usual order the "Chicken Hero" Consisting of—-
Chicken ( Large Chunks Of Tender & Juicy Chicken ), French Fries, Eggplant & there secret white sauce (not the usual white sauce recipe halal cart patrons are accustom too) on a hero bread…. Boom that's the official Sandwich….
Now here is the reason for the 3 Stars!
When ever I eat this damn so tasty sandwich It's so hard to digest, maybe it's the spices or the white sauce… But damn I will get the sandwich burps that would last the next couple of hours… but taking out any 1 of the ingredients will be a *sin*…. Definitely worth it… I just feel bad for my girl LoL !
In a sea of gyro carts in the middle of Astoria, how do you know which to choose? I usually go for the one with the lines or simply follow my nose.
This gyro cart, located on Steinway and 34th Ave., serves a very unique combination of meat, veggies and French fries in the Astoria version of the gyro platter. My favorite is the chicken gyro platter (they also serve felafel, beef and lamb – delicious as well). It comes perfectly proportioned with either rice or pita bread, fried eggplants (The BEST!), lettuce, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and French fries topped with yogurt and hot sauce.
All the meat is juicy and savory. I've seen some other customers just order the beef on a stick with some bread. Smells delicious! Recently I tried their hot dog and to my surprise that thing was spicy! The hot dog is a nice snack. I need the gyro platter to satisfy my appetite. Enjoy!
