Going to your best local Halal cart or truck beats waiting in line at the nearest Halal Guys.
That statement shouldn't need an explanation.
Outside of the 53rd Street and 6th Avenue Halal cart which is untouchable, this is one of the best halal food carts you are going to find in the city.
They relocated across the street because of the Citi bikes getting installed but just know it is still the same guys running the show.
The team here is willing to accomodate you. If I want a couple of french fries or a falafel added to a chicken and rice platter it is not a problem. The prices are reasonable, you will spend about $5-$7 for your meal.
The meat is tender and the other ingredients taste fresh, you can't go wrong here for a meal on a budget. The sauces are also not to be missed whether you are a fan of the secret white sauce (still not sure what this consists of), the bbq sauce, or the hot sauce which isn't nearly as spicy as the one from the Halal Guys on 53rd.
when it comes to Halal food? ERRYONE talks about Halal Guys. however, this shiny food truck is slinging some mean tasty spicy from the Middle Ea(ts) #seewhatididthere
and why is this labelled "Halal Cart"? it's a Halal TRUCK!
it's the big silver-ish truck sitting on the opposite side of the Mosque on the other side of 11th Street. can't miss cuz it's on the corner of 11th St and 1st Ave.
the food? insanely good and at a great value (cheap!). nearly everything on the menu is $6-$7 or under. lamb over rice; chicken over rice; falafel over rice; MEATZILLA combo rice platter (lamb and chicken); and a variety of sandwiches: hamburgers, hotdogs, gyros…
the food itself: DELICIOUS!
chicken over the rice (a go-to for me) composed of all fresh ingredients. seasoned perfectly. cooked with savor n flavor. the chicken melts in your mouth–tender, not fatty, and totally soaked in layers of spice. the rice fluffy carb goodness. veggies/salad is crunchy, soaks in the spice and sauces, and is a nice cooling component 'cept it has jalapenos chopped into it (SPICE FACTOR: AWESOME!). the white sauce is excellent. the hot red sauce is fiery. once both sauce soak into the rice and chicken…you are on your way to a deliciously fiery demise. the veggies, rice, and chicken are packed to the brim in a styrofoam container. i've had the lamb over rice…which is excellent. btw, you do not get pita with your rice platter like you do at Halal Guys. just an FYI. however the rice combo platters pack enough food that it is hardly missed at all.
PRO TIP #1: if you don't like SPICY. do not get the red sauce. it is can be insanely hot especially if they soak your food in it. you and your lower intestines have been warned!
the truck offers a variety of sodas. i never opt for them. not because of the sugar content. overly sugary carbonated drinks don't cut spiciness of the food here–they actually make it worse IMO. 'sides the beer options in my fridge laughs at these truly "soft drinks."
the truck is strictly take out. you can obviously lean again the building nearby and eat. they've set up a huge trash can for all you foodie monsters who can't resist the urge to pop the top and inhale your food. i hate eating with cheap plastic forks that bend, break, and often are the cause of many food messes…so i control my savage hunger til i get home. i advise you do the same.
PRO TIP #2: get your food and go. don't be a savage.
does this truck have the volume and lines as Halal Guys? no, but they still do a ton of business. to me, a huge line in front of eatery says nothing to me, but it is who is in that line that is of more value…tons of cabbies, limo drivers, and mosque goers line up and get food from here–which is the reason why i do. the food quality is excellent, price is a great value, and the cuisine offerings feel genuine to what folks from areas of the Middle East might expect in terms of familiar comfort food being replicated in the West. in fact, there was quite a brouhaha amongst cabbies who'd line up cabs and double n triple park to eat from this food truck on both 11th St and 1st Ave. so yeah it can busy here especially when the drunk folks cometh!
PRO TIP #3: advise you catch cabs who are not scarfing down food cuz of "gas leaks"–DANGER, don't strike a match! lol
drops mic so i can get my rice n spice on before you can!
i out yo!
