Very rarely do I enjoy chain store restaurants and this one is no different.
The concept is great – specializing in soup with options of sandwiches and salads.
To their credit they do carry a good number of soups daily but the taste has always been average amongst all their variety. I wouldn't be surprised if the soups were heated up from pre-made/ pre-packaged mixes. I know that my office cafeteria carries a line of hale and hearty soups and I know they aren't making that from scratch.
The chicken noodle is your standard chicken noodle. The split pea is decent but very thick. The chicken corn chowder is pretty good – slightly sweet. Tomato basil is healthy but a bit too tangy. All in all decent but hardly the taste of homemade from scratch as they tout it to be. Better than soup from a can but not much better than your avg mass produced and prepackaged soup mixes/recipes.
The sandwiches are ok but again nothing special – all premade and out of the fridge cold. The few hot pressed options are served luke warm and not much better. They have all your standard mozz and tomato, chicken cesar, turkey avacado, chicken salad, chicken buffalo, etc.
The only thing that keeps me coming back is the location being right near my office.
I'm no competitive eater but I can never understand how one can have just soup for a meal. Unless I eat a whole pot, there's just no way for soup alone to satisfy this stomach.
So instead of a meal, I stopped by hale and hearty for a snack. I need to snack on soup more often! My mushroom barley soup was perfect in every way! Flavour, seasoning, texture, and temperature – it was everything I craved! Paired with warm, crusty 5 grain bread. Wished I was able to order a whole pot to take home! Now that I'm hooked- Can't wait to return to try out the whole soup menu!
Spotlessly clean! Super friendly and helpful staff. Not such a busy location which makes it easy to sit. 3 Lentil soup is delicious and they make super sandwiches. I had the cajun chicken. You can do the half sandwich half soup combo which is a good deal.
Perfect for a speedy lunch.
I have been here a couple of times as this location is close to my job. The seating area is located in the front and in the back is where you order. The lines are almost always crazy unless it's 90 degree weather :P. The staff is sometimes hit or miss — but the associates that work on the sandwich bar is usually nice. My favorite soup to order is Crab Bisque (it's rich, creamy and if you are lucky you might end up with a chunk of crab) but it's on the pricey side.
Good go-to soup place. So many locations, this one by my work. I get the daily soup menu sent to my email, so no matter what the day is going to bring I know I can always plan for . . . soup. I get their New England Clam Chowder, Chicken Pot Pie, one of their many different chili soups, split pea soup, and a spicy Thai shrimp and rice soup which I recommended to my boss (who is Chinese) and she loved my recommendation (almost never happens)!
Clean, not too crowded, during lunch staff from the nearby New York Times building are standing in line. I don't normally go for the sandwiches or salads, but they are also options. This location is not too crowded, I can always find a place to sit, especially before 1 pm.
Good to know I can stop by after working late, when tired and needing something small but good to take home.
Thankfully efficient during the lunchtime rush. And super friendly with the samples. What more could you want, really?
Perfect quick lunch spot for your salad, soup and/or sandwich cravings. Not the best or most authentic joint, but definitely A-OK! I enjoyed the Tomato Veggie soup and the Salads are fine. The prices could use some work…4 plus dollars for a tiny soup?? Yikes.
Soup is the cure to bad colds for me. I stopped by here on a whim during lunch time despite the crazy long line I saw from outside. Although I thought it was going to take forever to get my food, I was actually only on line for a good 5 minutes. They have an excellent system that keeps the lines organized and running! I was very impressed! As of now, I've only had their chicken noodle and corn bisque, but both soups were delicious and full of of ingredients with every bite. I also enjoy the large pack of round crackers they give you. Even if you run out of soup, the crackers are still fun to eat on it's own! My next target is going to be their New English Clam chowder. I hope it won't disappoint!
