I adore condiments so it was with some shock that I took the news from my man at Hale & Hearty that they had no mayonnaise or mustard for the half sandwich I got to accompany my soup. He went the distance for me though, providing me with a tiny tub of honey mustard dressing and an apology.
The woman at the register was baffled too by the lack of simple sandwich spreads.
My broccoli soup was neither good, nor great but simply okay. And I'd have enjoyed my sandwich so much more if it'd had the benefit of mayonnaise and mustard.
They have some AWESOME soups……and sandwiches. I love their mulligatawny soup, which has a fair amount of curry in it. Considering I don't usually like curry, I don't know, this was fabulous for some reason.. It was a very hearty soup. This is a chain, and I was at the Chelsea Market location.
On a rainy Saturday during a weekend visit to NYC, my friend and I came to Chelsea Market on a recommendation from a friend. The weather was just right for soup, and when we past Hale & Hearty, we knew it was our spot for lunch.
Seating is tough, as in, there isn't any. But sprinkled through the Market are small tables, so we were able to nab one and go in relay-style to get our lunch.
Short line, and I was able to order quickly. Ordered Vegetarian Split Pea and was told they are all out. No big deal, except they have a huge menu with little stickers that says, "SOLD OUT", and Split Pea didn't have one. Just sort of aggravating when you spend 10 minutes trying to decide among 50 soup flavors, only to discover that the one you finally chose isn't even available. Back to the drawing board!
Ended up with Italian Wedding. The flavor was pretty good, but the temperature was just TOO hot. They don't give enough bread — one slice for a good-sized cup of soup. Total cost for soup and a water: $10. Little steep for what's included.
My friend had chicken pot pie. Good but a little bland. I just expected better? Heartier? Not sure, but H&H wasn't quite what I wanted. I would probably come back but wouldn't make it a destination.
BOO, the long lines got me excited. I thought this would be as good as SF soup company.
(+/-) Chicken + Vegetable w/ choice of couscous or noodles. Couscous expanded and overpowered my soup, which was already lacking in flavor and chicken :(.
(+) Choice of sourdough, whole grain bread or crackers with your soup. Whole grain was pretty good
** note ** Easy to choose healthy here, calories posted for the weekly soups as well as, L = low fat, V = vegetarian and D = no dairy. No calories, just L, V or D for the dailies.
Cost = $6.70 for a large soup. Lines move quickly, they also have combos (sandwiches, salads, soups).
I like the fact that I can get Hale & Hearty salads in this area. I ordered my own mix yesterday from this store:
Avocado & Egg with kidney beans along with their Thai peanut sauce. YUM!
There is no place to sit so minus a star. 😛
Many of the soups are delicious. My favorite is the Senegalese Chicken and the Chicken & Corn chowder. The sandwiches leave something to be desired. I come in here for lunch and it tends to be very crowded. This is also prime time to observe people try as many as 5 soups with these little cups and dwell over the nuances of how much pepper or kale is in their soup while a line of 50 people is behind them. This is not a tasting laboratory. Order your soup and let us get back to work.
This is a chain but it is reliable and I love the fact it is always clean, fast and welcoming. I got their Chicken quinoa soup and it is hearty, healthy and full of fiber! I am glad they provided healthy options for diners and they list calories so I know how much I have consumed.
I just wish the price is lower!
This is a chain (local chain I believe), this particular location is located in the Chelsea Market, if you haven't been to Chelsea Market it's definitely worth checking out. Hale and Hearty never disappoints, they have a big selection of soups and chowders that all taste great. I'm not a fan of salads but they have a pretty good looking salad bar. The only real disappointment (besides the slightly high prices) is that the sandwiches are pre-made so they aren't perfectly fresh and you can't customize by taking or adding any ingredients. But for soup Hale and Hearty delivers.
