Hallo Berlin
“They have a decent selection of beer, and you can order it by the mug, stein, or litre.”
“We had good beer for reasonable prices – similar to those at Zum Schneider which is much farther away for us.”
“Which is also a good excuse for why i ordered a Radler (light beer mixed with lemon soda) but hey, it was good.”

So, this is a 3.5 star restaurant with a few things dragging it down to a 3.
First, the food. The food is good. The Wurst are uniformly tasty. The currywurst is as good as I had in Berlin. The potato pancakes are very good. The spatzle is pretty good. The soups are very tasty. Overall, I'm a fan of the food.
The beer is also good, although it can be overpriced.
The not-so-good: The entire restaurant seems a few bucks more expensive than necessary, sometimes. The service isn't very good here either. While the food is quality, it's not so amazing that you forget that the service is not good and the food is pricy for a casual place. So I'll round down a 3.5 star place to 3 based on pricing and service.
A great German meal all around. The food is decent (nothing amazing), but where that lacks, the atmosphere, options and oh yeah, German beer, make up for it. It's not a truly authentic meal in the terms that you'll feel like you're back in Berlin, but the experience is one similar to one you'd get there. We stopped in for a quick dinner and each had a beer (many options both in flavors and sizes) and a bite. My wife ordered the split pea soup (which was pretty good and hearty) and the potato pancakes (a little greasier than usual). I went with the currywurst and was very happy. All in all it's a great spot and one worth checking out. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable.
Came here for dinner on a Thursday.
I had the potato pancakes which were not that good, and the one of the curry wurst which was also OK. My girlfriend had other wurst which wasn't good at all. I downed them with a white beer.
The place was not very good. Their menus need to be reprinted and the place looks dirty. I am not coming back.
The waiters had a shirt that said "The wurst restaurant in NY", Unfortunately that pun feels like it's a bit too close to home 😉
I saw Hallo Berlin walking to Pio Pio once and got really excited about having German food again. The next time I was in the neighborhood, I thought, Hallo Berlin!
So after a convention at Jacob Javits, we decided to go to Hallo Berlin. The menu was a bit lacking, but I ordered a radler and a couple of bockwurst on the lunch special that came with a potato salad and string bean salad.
The red flag came to me in terms of authenticity when the waiter couldn't tell the difference between a radler and a dark beer. (In case you're wondering, a radler is half Pilsner, half Sprite).
The bockwurst was so-so, and the potato salad and bean salad portion was tiny. Overall, it was okay, but disappointing.
Went for an early dinner around 5 pm and the place was pretty empty, but started to fill up more as we left. Were serviced by an attentive waitress who knew about the different beers and menu options. Was very happy with the food (we love currywurst) and the kids menu is limited (1 option) but was good for our 3 year old.
I have been walking past Halo Berlin for years and finally decided to give it a try earlier this month. Its about the size any other place else in Hell's Kitchen. You come here for German Beer the food menu is not by any mean extensive and they don't five you large portions. I had the knockwurst lunch special. Honestly I cant remember how good or bad the food was. I know what you are thinking and it wasn't that I had to many beers lol. The food was just average. They have a nice selection of German Beers so I would be back just for that.
Looking for a good happy hour in NYC or German beers? Well then, this is the place to come to. A good assortment of German beers on tap and decent prices too. The bartender was friendly and helpful and the beer was great. Would suggest people to stop by here for Happy Hour! They've got a good variety of brats as well!
This place was a really tough call for me.
One one end, the beer selection here was fab. As a die-hard German beer lover, nothing puts a smile on my face like having a huge stein of Hofbrau in my hand after a long week. The ambiance of this place was also pleasant. While it's not as immersive as say the Bierhaus on the east side or the Bohemian beer hall in Queens, this place still has lots of character and brings back fond memories of my visits to Germany.
The service here is also okay. The waiters were very friendly but it wasn't always easy to get people's attention. However, generally it was fine.
Biggest issue here was the food. The side dishes like the German purple cabbage, fries, string beans, cucumber salad and sauerkraut were all quite good. But the entrees were pretty awful. The weinerschnitzel was absolutely terrible. The meat was dry as cardboard and had literally no edible texture. Even the side of delish paprika sauce wouldn't salvage it. Same goes for the herring which was flavorless and just dull. The rich sauce was also overpowering and not very good. The daily soup (cauliflower) was ok and tasted like a really thick split pea/potato soup of sorts. Generally I was extremely unimpressed with the meat dishes. Perhaps next time I'll try their sausage selection to see if that is better.
It's this big divide between what was good/awesome and what was terrible that made this place tough to really give a decent review so at the moment I think it's a solid 3 stars .. but hopefully the next visit and a different choice of entrees will help the situation.
