Hamilton Deli
“If not, and you're in the Morningside area you owe it to yourself to give Hamdel a try.”
“However, Ham Del prepares such masterpieces as the Godfather, Clinton, Lewinsky, and NYPD.”
“Frankly I'm surprised there aren't more Yelp reviews for this place considering that a significant portion of Columbia's student body worship it.”

This place is average. It seems like a convenient place for Columbia students especially the law students during lunch time. It's reasonably priced and has a lot of traffic around lunch time. They use a lot of cheese in their sandwiches which is awesome for a cheese lover like me.
Found my "gold card" from college and decided to stop by. In six years, nothing had changed– though the employees did have new uniforms. Standard deli sandwiches and salad bar. Lots of grab and go snacks.
On this visit, I got my go to burger deluxe: a huge burger with lettuce and tomato and fries. The fries here are actually pretty good, always fresh, a little thinner than a steak fry, but still crunchy.
During lunch, HamDel gets pretty crowded with students and hospital staff, but the employees do a good job getting people in and out quickly.
I ordered a buffalo blue and mottz sticks. The chicken in my sandwhich was not fully cooked and I never felt so sick in my life after just one bite. Luckily there were good mottz sticks to give me something to eat that night. Will never go back.
There was a time in my life where I literally ordered Hamilton Deli for lunch all week. Recently I have tried* to bring lunch because I realize that I spend a ridiculous amount of money on food but even when I do I give in because I crave their salads. Who craves salads right? lol Nevertheless its safe to say that I am back to my old routine. It's to the point where even if I didn't place my order just yet and they come to deliver to someone in the office our receptionist automatically calls me lol
Once they ran our of goat cheese and actually CALLED to tell me and asked if I would like something else instead. This may not seem like a big deal to some but I have ordered delivery on many occasions and when the food arrived I had a "what the heck is this moment??" called the restaurant and they told me "Oh yeah we ran out of this, so substituted it with that" which is horrible. I was thankful that Hamilton Deli did not do this.
As far as delivery, I order through seamless and this seems to be one of the very few Deli's that deliver in Harlem. Therefore I recommend ordering ahead to avoid any delays.
Besides their fresh tasting salads, I have ordered many of their delicious sandwiches such as the chicken cheesesteak hero which was delicious and made to perfection!
Although cold sandwiches aren't really my thing, The Godfather Hero (Ham, salami, pepperoni, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato, hot and sweet peppers, onions, oil and vinegar) is really quite delicious. Although they aren't too spicy, the hot peppers carry a great punch while the oil and vinegar make it a lot more luxurious than one would assume. Definitely a great lunch sandwich. Would order again!
Hamilton Deli is a standard deli sandwiches and salad bar right next to the law school and joint law/business building at Columbia. They also cater student events on campus. Regularly visited by Columbia students due to its convenient location, the food is solid. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but if you need a sandwich or snack, it's a decent choice.
They brag about their "gigantic" sandwiches; while it's a bit of an overstatement, the sandwiches are filling, though I've heard they've gotten skimpier over the years. As for their "famous combination heroes" I recommend the Big Bird (smoked turkey and sliced chicken breast), tuna melt, and Jose Special (virginia ham, melted american cheese, lettuce, tomato, buttered bread). Yes, those are a bit heart-attack-inducing, but you don't go to HamDel for a healthy sandwich! Staff is nice and generally efficient.
To be honest, I'm not a fan of the food made behind the counter, but it is a convenient place to grab food if you're a student at Columbia, work in the area, or passing by. I often get prepackaged snacks and drinks here. They offer many savory food options though, like sandwiches and burritos, just nothing I've personally enjoyed. It's just a bit plain and nothing terribly special. They have a salad bar as well, which I'm sure is good, because you are able to essentially make it yourself. Just tell the person behind the counter what you want in it. Despite not loving the food, the staff is kind. I do appreciate their help.
Almost walked by this place, glad I saw several university students go in. The menu has at least 2 dozen choices to choose from. This was great for a quick bite to get on the run. The burgers with french fries was very filling.
Good:
-The Manhattan Project Burger
-Burgers come with french fries
-Very filling lunch
Bad:
-During busy lunch time, hamburgers orders take longer than hero orders
