Hampton Chutney
“My favorites are the kalamata olive and the seasonal beet and goat cheese dosas, but I've never had anything here I didn't like.”
“I've only really had one thing here, item #1 classic masala dosa, since any Dosa that diverts from the typical Indian potato filling grosses me out.”
“This dosa and gulps of the perfectly sweet, milky, flavorful cardamom coffee are a fantastic way to start your weekend.”

Yumm-o !!!! The intense flavors are amazing and pops in my mouth. Curry chicken with mango sauce is an amazing combo. Dosa is large enough to share. Must try!
Their breakfast dosa reminds me of a crepe. Not that that's a bad thing. It came with avocado – a nice touch – and you have your selection of chutneys. I had the mango and tomato chutneys. The former had flava, but the latter wasn't spicy at all, even though the staff warned me. Boo.
There's lots of seating, in case you're debating bring a Boy Scout troop here.
3.5 stars
I ate here tonight with tears in my eyes thinking about times past in this nice area of the UWS, and about moments I have had years ago in this restaurant worrying over the same things I worry over now.
It is amazing to eat food like this. Clean, somehow at once flavorful and stalwart, decadent and healthful. The dosas are perfectly made, the #8 (grilled chicken, caramelized onions, peppers, arugula) with the peanut chutney is a masterpiece.
I don't know what to say guys. Does the person at the counter seem rude? Maybe they are unhappy about the very thing you are unhappy about and if you asked you would both be friends or lovers or even married years from now.
It is so impossible to see into the mind of another person, to ever really know–even on a fundamental level–the people we care about and love. So what? So we give up on everyone? No, we accept whatever shortcomings there might be in a person to cherish the few amazing things we do know for sure about them.
And look, we know the food here is outstanding. It has been for like 10 years now. The place is more of a 4 but the rating needs to be higher. I was crying, sitting alone here tonight, worried but hopeful, and the food here comforted me, it was like knowing something for sure, like being positive about some small fact, like being in love.
I have written to Hampton Chutney asking them to please have a restaurant in Washington D.C., but they said that was not in their plans. I love this place so much and miss eating there every week when I used to live in NYC. The dosas are made with lentils and filled with delicious savory fillings. I always go for the breakfast dosa with avocado and mango chutney. It is a perfect breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I will be going into NYC this weekend and will make sure to stop here when I'm in town!!
The chutneys themselves are quite good but everything else is kind of meh. The thali unlike most proper ones comes with some soup (with some undercooked lentils), some chutney, some rice, and some fairly bland curry. A proper thali can come with like 12 different things. Also I ordered mine with chicken thinking that it'd be chicken curry but instead the standard veg thali was simply topped with some plain roasted chicken.
Anyways, if you like this place, I'd encourage you to go try some real dosas as well. Check out Chennai Garden in the Flatiron.
I cannot say enough good things about this place. The UWS is home to one of their three locations (one in Soho, as well as the Hamptons). My go-to order is always one of their dosa sandwiches (super long thin flakey/crispy dough), usually with avocado, some sort of cheese, and veggies.
What really puts these sandwiches over the top are the amazing assortment of chutneys you can pick from to add on to the side.
Really good drinks and desserts as well.
Hypes:
– Awesome kid friendly restaurant which is a good place to grab a bite to eat. They have a mix of indian and fusion dosas, of fresh ingredients and flavors. I love the variety of cheeses, toppings (avocado, chicken, mushrooms, etc), and the chutneys.
– Love the chai and the cardamom coffee. Even iced are good.
– Curry chicken, avocado, and the spiced potato dosas all were great
– A vast variety of vegetarian and meat options for both green lovers and meat lovers alike
Gripes:
– Don't come here if you're looking for an authentic Indian experience. This is fusion at its best. They do have some great indian flavors though.
Think of it like a gluten free burrito with an Indian twist. If you are not into Indian there are plenty of other fillings for your "dosa". The wraps are tasty and filling and since the place is counter service and BYOB the bill is relatively low for good food, a comfortable space and in the summer out door seating which I love. While the food is perhaps nothing extraordinary it is good for the price. I like the curried chicken dosa but last night my husband got one with avocado and melted cheese that was amazing! And if you like spicy, try the mango chutney – has a kick!
