This place was getting busy and with customers coming and going, I expected their food to be great, walked out highly disappointed.
Our group ordered:
– kalbi tang
– mulneanmyun
– bibimbap
– Kalbi tang was flavored with Beef Dashida, the meat was hard to cut. They took the meat out too early.
– Mulneanmyun was eh… there wasn't any flavor in the broth and you do need to add a lot of vinegar to enhance the dish.
– Bibimbop – not worth it.
As you can tell, I really don't have a lot of say… this is how disappointed I was of this Korean joint. I will not be back!
So I am by no means an expert in Korean food, it is one of the few cuisines I have had very little experience with. That said, I didn't really enjoy anything about Hanbat, including the food.
My husband and I arrived on a Saturday night, not too late, with a Groupon. There was only 1 other table in the front of the store occupied, also with Caucasians, we thought maybe they were closing for the night, but they allowed us in. On my way to the bathroom I noticed the back room was nearly packed.
Despite the fact that they weren't closing, our waitress hovered around us, as if they were. There was a definite language barrier, which made things even more uncomfortable. The menu isn't well laid out, we tried to order an appetizer and two entrees, but every time we added a third thing, she erased one of the previous things we had requested. It was odd, because it wasn't a limited item Groupon, just a straight $40 value one. I also tried to order a dish that she said I couldn't have, because it was the BBQ, but there were no restrictions on the Groupon. And when I purchased it, Groupon's ad specifically recommended "L.A. kalbi or marinated beef short ribs" — which I thought were also part of the BBQ.
Before our entrees arrived, we received quite a spread of free dishes, which I looked up and are apparently called pan chan, and they are appetizers. These were probably the best part of the meal.
There were little sardine-type fishes (tasty), kimchi with the cucumber (also good), cabbage kimchi (which neither of us liked), a bean sprout dish, 1-2 others, and a really good dish of white gelatinous cubes covered in a sauce. These things (I have no idea what they were), were actually really really good; though the cube itself was flavorless, it was an interesting texture and the sauce was great.
I tried the seafood dish, which I think was the one others here raved about; but I was unimpressed. The level of heat was good, but it arrived still cooking in its little pot, and the rice got pretty much burned to the bottom. Also, the octopus was generally overcooked, I only got 1-2 pieces that were tender and not rubbery. It came with a bowl of soup, which was completely flavorless hot water with undercooked noodles in it. Portion size would have been alright for the price, fi the quality had been there.
My husband did get the LA short rib things. They were good, well seasoned and tenderly cooked. They weren't the highest quality of meat, you could tell, as they had a lot of gristle, and really caught between your teeth. Portion size was good.
Another typical Korean restaurant in Palisades Park. Great bossam, but everything else was pretty ordinary. We also ordered the bulgogi hot pot was all veggies barely meat. The side dishes were overly salty.
Service was good. That's pretty much it. Wouldn't come here again.
3.5 stars
I had sundae soup (soup with pork and Korean sausage) and spicy pork here. I really liked the fact that they open late (well considering when I come home from work every day). They serve good food. INterior is very clean and the service is good.
Great option for a late night meal at Palisades Park if you are too tired to go to Gammeeok in the city.
Came here on a groupon which allowed my boyfriend and I to have a feast! We both love spicy food and the server was super helpful and patient in helping us order. We got the octopus in spicy sauce which had such deep wonderful flavor and the portion was very generous. if you like octopus or feeling adventurous (It's a lot like calamari) and could handle your spice I highly recommend it. We also got the korean short ribs and perhaps it was because we were expecting something more like kalbi, (very saucy, fatty, and juicy) but we were a little disappointed with the dish, it was dry and could have used some of that korean magic sauce. If you need something you might have to make an extra effort to find a server, but the food is very good and the portions are enough for two. I will definitely be coming back to try the seafood pancakes and spicy beef soup the server suggested.
