The staff are AMAZINGLY nice and the menu looks SOOOO tempting on paper. They really put a lot of energy and care into the food preparation. It took a while to receive what I ordered. But they gave me nothing but smiles and good energy while I waited. The portion sizing is decent and they really try to give you something good. I can't emphasize these points enough!
But for the area they're in, the level of clientele living right next door, and the subsequent prices they're charging, they really need to be offering a better product. There was nothing at all memorable about any of the dishes I ordered. It didn't even hit my "greasy americanized chinese food" spot. I know lots of places in other parts of the city that charge half the price for twice the quality. It's even worth walking the 1.5 avenues over to Ollie's if you're in this area. You'll pay about the same amount…maybe a little more…but get far better quality.
But I really want them to succeed since they're such nice people. It actually makes me upset to have to write this review. But I'm sure there are others that will give them a more glowing review! So if you're game, hit them up! Maybe you'll enjoy Happy Family far more than I did!
Happy Family averaged out to be good, not great.
The sweet and sour cucumbers are a MUST. I'm so glad I got them…delicious, marinated in vinegar with some sort of sweetness and with a touch of garlic. Awesome.
I only had a bite of the spring roll but it tasted kind of soapy.
I also had a bit of the pork bun which was not so great. Definitely microwaved.
Tofu House Special with chicken and shrimp. Very good but not spicy (next time I'll ask for a little extra kick). Not really any veggies in it either but the tofu chicken and shrimp were all good quality.
General Tso Chicken – Again, only a bite. It was okay. Nothing to write home about.
If I were to go again, I would definitely order the cucumbers again and probably just a basic chicken and broccoli dish or something. Good place for lazy-day Chinese take-out or better yet, delivery.
Ate there once, i went there because my friend and i were craving stew beef with carrot for lunch. not the best price for the food you get since it wasn't that great.
The carrot wasn't cooked too well (i would prefer it softer) and the beef was a little too overcooked. the only thing that was acceptable was the sauce…
There are far better place to eat around hells kitchen than to eat at this place!
