I was around the area and decided to check out this ramen spot. Got a bar seat next to the sushi chef at the sushi bar. Upon being seated, I spotted a pair of sneakers and a bag next to my seat. I felt very repulsed by the pair of shoes next to my seat, where I was about to eat.
I ordered the miso ramen, but substituted the ground beef for pork – no additional charge. The soup base tasted okay, not enough noodles though. The meat tasted pretty good, not too dry, but they forgot to add corn which comes standard with this ramen. Ugh which I didn't realized till I finished!
Since I was seated in front of the sushi chef, I was able to see everything. Whenever the business was slow, he would read the newspaper on top of the chopping board. It didn't look very clean and sanitary.
Overall, Service was okay, but I wouldn't come back.
Average ramen spot. Lots of typical Japanese food choices on the menu. Restaurant is on the small side. Food tastes just as expected but not super spectacular either. Will probably return the next time a ramen craving hits just bc there's no other ramen places in the area
They have sushi only on the weekends and granted when I went it was almost closing time but they had no more sushi left!. Booooo! They did offer other selections which turned out to be good. They were the only place opened late so I guess my options were limited.
Allow me to echo the sentiments expressed in prior reviews: a ramen noodle place in Fresh Meadows is most surely welcome in this area.
Food: we ordered the fried oysters, hamachi kama, yakitori squid ball things, fried tofu in soup, fried soft shell crab, shoyu ramen, spicy ramen, and green tea tiramisu. For two people, that may appear to be quite a bit, and it was, but we wanted to try everything. Look, the ramen here isn't so impressive that Ippudo, et al., need to be on notice, but it's important to understand that this is Fresh Meadows, a place devoid of ramen. I'd actually recommend the appetizers more than the noodles or dessert. I'm so tempted to come back and attack every appetizer on the menu without ordering anything else. I don't recommend the fried oysters, too much dough, even for this price point. Try everything else, though!
Service: I think it's a hit or miss. Our server was good, but the other people bringing food to our table needed more training. The guy kept spilling stuff! Not on me, thankfully.
Decor: this newly renovated space just needs the right people to staff it.
Note to owners: giving an incentive for people to actually write reviews may dilute the authenticity of experiences here. May want to reconsider this – perhaps a check in offer of some sort?
I hope to return.
I definitely agree with those who have mentioned the spicy miso is just OVERBEARINGLY spicy. There is no taste to it at all. It does not enhance or make the broth any more rich. It was as if they dumped some cayenne pepper in there. It was not. ok.
Hamachi kama is on the menu. Pretty good, as well as the karage. Good for apps and a good size portion. They stop serving sushi at night time because the chef leaves. It's not a terrible late night spot in Flushing, but it just use a little more work if ramen is their "specialty."
Trying this place for the first time, I recommend the takoyaki tempura (a bit crispy outside) and the tonkatsu ramen, I got the chewy (wavy) noodles. Fried tofu is good to share with the table. Good place to try one if you're craving for ramen around the area, definitely not as good as totto ramen or ippudo in the city. Spicy miso ramen tastes and bit weird and wasn't that good. Yakisoba was a bit too sweet but fine to try. Desserts weren't that good so I recommend skipping it.
They don't take group reservation and service is a bit slow. Paying cash is cheaper than using a card (they take off the tax). Writing a review on your first visit also won't get you any discount. Not sure if I'll be coming back for a second visit.
This restaurant's lighting is dim for no reason. It really messes with my food porn flow.
I came here in a small group of three. We ordered three appetizers to share and a ramen each. We got the aged tofu, grilled squid, and the takoyaki (NOT the takoyaki tempura). I was really impressed with the appetizers as I thought everything was really tasty. The aged tofu is clean-eating, nice and light. Grilled squid is always a winner – perfectly grilled with smoky flavors and very tender. The takoyaki had a softer and silkier texture than takoyaki from other places (almost like it was steamed) – I thought it was a fun change from the typical and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yum.
The ramen, however, was a disappointment. I ordered the spicy miso ramen in which their broth is chicken-based. I thought the broth was missing depth and pretty much flavorless minus the spice which was quite powerful for no reason. Like drinking red spicy water. Even the egg was boiled like an amateur. A very sad excuse of a ramen. I tried my friend's tonkatsu broth and thought it was much better, though still far from being anything close to amazing.
Overall I'm not a fan of the ramen here, at all. The appetizers rounded the restaurant up to 3 stars though. The service was very pleasant and we were even told that the tax would be taken off our bill if we paid cash instead of credit card which is cool. I have to admit that it kind of irks me that this restaurant offers a free appetizer for those who had written a Yelp review. I think it could make reviews less honest. Check-ins for a free appetizer would be more acceptable.
I was craving a warm bowl of delicious ramen and I must say, I was not impressed. I ordered the regular miso ramen and my friend got the spicy miso ramen. I am so glad I didn't get the spicy version because I would not have been able to eat my bowl at all — the spiciness gets you at the end and it's the type that makes you keep drinking water. My friend went through at least 3 glasses of water.
With my bowl, the broth wasn't oily, but it wasn't super flavorful either. It's a miso based broth, so I wasn't expecting strong flavors, but I just thought it was meh. I could drink it but I wasn't enjoying it. I liked how the pork pieces I got weren't too fatty, but they weren't as tender as I'd like it to be. On the plus side, you get to choose which type of ramen noodles you want in your dish (curly or straight). The waiter took my friend's order first and then mine's. While he asked my friend which noodle he'd preferred, he didn't ask me. I assumed that the waiter thought I wanted curly noodles too — just like my friend. It's not a big deal since I was going to get the curly noodles, but just in case this happens to anyone else, don't be afraid to double check with the waiter. The table next to us tried to change their noodle type after placing in their order, but the waitress told them it was too late to change it since the chefs cook the noodles first.
The biggest disappointment was the egg — one of my favorite parts of any dish. I'm a huge fan of soft-boiled eggs and that's what I expected. When the waiter brought the dishes to us, I immediately saw the inconsistency in the eggs. My friend got a hard boiled egg and I got an egg that was bordering between soft boiled and hard boiled. ):
Other than that, the service was really good, as there were only 2 other tables — so the waiter was very observant and attentive with refilling our glasses of water and taking away the finished dishes.
