I have been coming here a bit more often and liking it for also late night. Good ambience and good crowd.
My husband and I dined at Haven on Valentine's Day 2016, which had a pre fix menu for $85 per person as it was a holiday. The food was delicious, and the restaurant itself is stunning.
I had a yellow tartar appetizer and my husband ordered something with scallops. They were both AMAZING. When it was time for our entrees I ordered the salmon, and the husband got seafood risotto once again both simply delicious, and dessert was just as good, we got a brownie, and bread pudding.
The speciality the cocktails were delicious and our glasses were never empty.
Now the reason I only rated 2 stars. I believe the waiter stole my credit card number here. (Which is also the reason I waited a few months to post this review.) Luckily Bank of America contacted me ASAP, and I was not held responsibly for any of the charges, but I wanted to warn diners to BEWARE. This was the last place I used the card prior to the number being stolen.
Appetizers
-Firecracker shrimp: light sweat and sour sauce coating which does not take away from the tempura below
-Pretzel crusted fried calamari: as one can expect from a calamari dish, evenly coated
New Orleans chicken & sausage gumbo: a large helping with substantial chunks of chicken, enough to replace a small entree
Entrees
-Pan seared miso glazed Chilean sea bass: came as a large portion with thick layers that easily collapsed apart for tender, flavored bites
-Grilled Montauk swordfish: a very tender filet–one of the best prepped that I've had, with a rich sweet potato cash (more than enough to pair with small bites of fish)
-Roasted Rosemary lamb shank: again, very tender. Huge portion.
Dessert
-Chocolate croissant bread pudding: palm-sized, very sweet but not painfully so when shared for a few bites. Great texture between the sabayon sauce, the flaky exterior, and slight resistance of the pudding beneath.
Worthwhile to consider the happy hour (5-8) and pre-fixe menus (5-7) for weekdays. A lot of serious/popular entrees can be found on the latter.
I enjoyed this visit for the high quality across the menu and from our service. This is in perhaps a simple plaza but my personal priority is the dining experience. Note that only several tables ~5 have an in impeded view of the skyline.
I made a 6 pm reservation for my dad's birthday dinner on Saturday and we all had a great dining experience. Per my request, we had a window-side table for a nice riverfront view. I'd imagine it's even prettier in the summer!
Our waiter was very attentive and came by often to check up on us. I started off with the fried goat cheese and berries salad and shared the mac and cheese with my brother. The mac and cheese was unbelievably good. Cheese, pasta, mushrooms, and bacon bits had me fighting with my brother over the last few pieces. For my main course, I got the pork chop which comes out in a huge portion. I couldn't even finish half of it. The seafood risotto was another standout plate. I'm always a little wary of risotto dishes because it's so easy to get wrong, but the flavor was great, the seafood portion was generous, and my mom had a hard time finishing it as well (but not for lack of trying!)
My only complaint would be that the oysters were not very fresh, although admittedly, we did order them during oyster off-season. I definitely want to come back in the warmer months to enjoy the view, ambience and food!
What a meal we had at HAVEN for Hudson Restaurant Week. First of all, it has to be said that this place has an amazing atmosphere and a great location. It's classy, elegant, and fresh all at the same time and boasts views of Morningside Heights down to the Financial District.
For food, their menu is not cheap, but if you can catch a deal like we did for Hudson Restaurant Week ($40pp 3-course prix fixe), you have no excuse to not go here. We started off with the Truffle Mac & Cheese and the Shrimp Firecracker. The mac and cheese was full of truffle flavor, cooked well with just the right amount of cheese. The Shrimp Firecrackers were impressive in that they look heavily breaded, but you'll find that they just use large (and very tasty) shrimp. They're served in what almost tastes like a sweet and sour sauce. For my entree I got the Roasted Rosemary Lamb Shank which was served with risotto fritters and a stew. The portion was huge, which is not typically what you expect from a restaurant like this. It melted off the bone, easily pulled apart without even having to use a knife, and as with everything else it tasted great. My girlfriend got the Southwest Hanger Steak, which was a smaller portion, but she was equally impressed. I left here feeling very full and satisfied.
The service was friendly and attentive – I had my water filled continuously throughout the meal and our waitress came to check up on us often. Overall, it was a great dining experience and one I would expect for Hudson Restaurant Week. We were impressed and would probably head back here for a celebration or special occasion of some sort.
Came here for brunch with my boyfriends family. The place is gorgeous! The prices are also reasonable, however I was very underwhelmed on the portions specifically for salads. Given, I understand certain restaurants provide smaller portions; I left incredibly disappointed with the size of my salad and my soon-to-be father in law and boyfriend were eating off my soon-to-be mother in laws plate to fill up (keep in mind we are used to small portions). Although It was delicious I felt like there wasn't enough for me to even really enjoy it. The steak and eggs looked good (and from what he said) was very good. The kale salad looked beautiful, tasted it and it was ok, nothing to write home about. The eggs Benedict was very yummy. The service was nice and formal but slow. Took a while for the server to ask us for our orders (boyfriend had to flag him down). The food also took it's time coming out but granted, it did come out beautifully plated. Overall place was good. I'd probably go back expecting a bit more from them, perhaps I should try them for dinner as we went for lunch. All-in-all worth the trip on ambience alone.
Before I begin.i would like to say that the service and ambience deserve 5 stars++. As soon as we arrived we were greeted with dashing smiles. Our hostess Alba was just the sweetest thing. We were not happy with our table and she went out of her way to accommodate us by taking us around the restaurant to pick another table. The ambience and view of NYC were just magnificent. The music was on the loud side, which gave it an upbeat, club-like vibe, which I totally loved.
We came here for restaurant week and were very disappointed with our entrees. The appetizers were exceptionally good and we were hopeful for the same quality with our entrees. For appetizers, we had the shrimp firecracker which was amazing. The shrimp was very fresh and the sauce was a perfect blend of tangy-sweet. We also had the field tomato salad with blue cheese, which was very tasty and refreshing. We both ordered the swordfish and the first time around, both were overcooked. Our waitress Emily was great… No questions asked, she suggested that our meals be re-cooked. They re-cooked them and they were cooked better but the swordfish still had a very dry texture and a fishy after taste. I am betting that it was frozen and more than likely, for a long time. We just had the most succulent fresh swordfish 3 nights before at St. Eves in Hohokus and could certainly tell the difference!
For dessert, my husband had the chocolate bread pudding which was out of this world. I had the panna cotta, which was highly disappointing… It was dry and rubbery. Again Emily was fantastic and asked me if I would like something else and I opted for the chocolate bread pudding since I wanted to play it safe… but this one was only ok … It had too much chocolate, it was like eating plain chocolate sauce. The drinks were pricey…. $16 for a glass of pinot grio. If I were to give this place another try, I would be very careful not to order fish.
Came here for HH few times with 2 other people. Granted it was a Friday and there were lots of patrons but, the place was not well staffed at all. We sat at one of the high tops and waited for the order to be taken for few mins. Server came and took our drink & food orders then disappeared. When I say disappeared, I mean she was gone gone for good 20 mins. Then as she returned and she asked what we wanted to order. Ha! We laughed and let her know we already ordered and she said she was handling 12 tables alone, poor women. We sat and waited some more… food & drinks finally came out.
We ordered short ribs sliders, grilled cheese, wings and truffle fries. Yum..! See why I gave 4 stars even with all the wait? Only feedback I have is about the short ribs sliders. Meat was bit dry and not as tender. Parts of the meat was hard and bun was too thick in comparison to the amount of meat.
Next time, I'll be back during the non-hh to see what the real service is like.
