  1. Saw the Happy Hour Specials as we walked by, and thought we'd give it a try.

Tried 3 things on the menu: the roti with curry sauce, the tom yum soup, and sangria. Totaling around $12.

The waitress seemed hesitant to offer us the Happy Hour Specials even though we still had half an hour left.

The roti roll was flaky and delicious, with a coconut curry dipping sauce. The soup was more sour than expected, but had two shrimp and was packed with veggies. The sangria was lychee infused, but was too sweet and syrupy.

Wouldn't return, but wasn't bad considering the price.

  2. Such an awkward place to have dinner……with the name of the restaurant plus the strange bar set-up and wall paintings, I think they would do much better if they rebranded to an American bar or even Mexican tequila bar rather than some Asian-fusion restaurant.

That being said, the boyfriend and I stopped by here as we were craving sushi and the happy hour deals caught our eye. Free beer if you order $16+ (and sushi dinners are always around this price..), otherwise $3 beers! Probably the only pleasant part of the meal. The waitress (the only one in the entire restaurant besides us…so awkward..) seemed really unhappy to be there. Most importantly, my sushi was SOGGY. Something about the rice was sticky and soggy at the same time, and almost sour as the sushi vinegar overpowered the delicacy of the rice. The salmon sashimi and sushi was also very mediocre, and the seaweed wrapping on my rolls were chewy. No thanks!

  3. It's funny how Seamless has amazing reviews for this place, but Yelp says it's mediocre. Once again, Yelp prevails.

The food was good, but not outstanding. Chinese/Thai cross is exactly what you'll get from this place. You can definitely taste and see the Chinese/Thai fusion, but again, it wasn't spectacular and didn't stand out from any of the other restaurants that I've had.

If you're in the area, this is a feasible option, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Also, they deliver all the way to the LES. That's an extra star in my book!

  4. Great for lunch delivery! They deliver all the way to Ave D so I've ordered lunch via Seamless a few times. They have lunch specials and I also like their duck buns.

  5. "Fusion? … If you say so."

This place is one of the reasons why I hate this "fusion" craze that has been going on for years. Typically both (or more cuisines) are screwed up.

The place looks more like an Mexican tequila bar than an Asian restaurant, with a large rectangular bar/table. I thought that was kind of different and cool.

Here is where the struggle comes in. I ordered the squid and rice for about 15 bucks for dinner and I have to say that I was a little disappointed. Do not get me wrong; the food was edible but it was barely one baby step above Chinese take out. The plate appeared to be thrown together with no care, the sauce (whatever it was) was waaaaay too sweet, and there about 5 or 6 calamari rings. Way too pricey for what was served. I also ordered the shimp/pork/mushroom shumai, which came AFTER my main dish arrived. I found the shumai to be really greasy. You know, like the ones from your local Chinese American take out joint.

The service was ok. Although, the one waitress did not seem to want to be there. Then again, many people do not want to be at their jobs.

I will say that Hawkers appears to have a decent lunch menu, which is way cheaper than dinner menu. In terms of dining, you should go to the Chinese takeout place that is a few doors down. The food would be cheaper and it would taste the same. Perhaps, the sushi is better than cooked items on the menu.

  6. Hawkers has a pretty interesting storefront.  It looks like a bar on the outside with its deep red color design and feels like a bar with its around-the-bar seating arrangement.  I've passed by this place several times not sure of what to expect, and after being lured in by its lunch special during one visit, I'm happy to say I'm a fan.

The place isn't big – there are no tables and no wait staff – you're seated around bar-style.  One or two staff members take your orders and man the register.  The lunch special are great and include Thai, Malaysian, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine.  It's almost like an all-star menu of top Asian dishes.  I usually get the Drunken Noodles, which come with soup.  The noodles smell and taste great, have some basil, chicken, and green peppers in them, and have a bit of a kick as well.  For the soup I would recommend the Tom Yum soup, which is super sour but very aromatic and tasty.  The Lunch Special is cheaper if you dine-in, plus they have a single huge TV to watch news or whatever.  They also serve drinks, so I may come back to see what dinner or HH is like.   Great spot.

  7. Asian Fusion is a stretch. This is Chinese American food with a few poorly done versions of dishes from other cuisines. But then I kind of feel that that's what a lot of Asian Fusion is anyway.

The roti canai was passable. The General Tso's chicken was actually cooked pretty nicely, not too dry and not too tough, but it didn't taste anything like General Tso's to me. The shumai were godawful, but the sauce they came in was even worse. They're not shrimp shumai, the menu doesn't describe them, but they were huge and filled with pork…possibly. Maybe chicken, maybe both. The sauce was bright red. I was drinking and I couldn't eat it. My friend who was pretty far gone looked at me and very seriously said it was one of the worst things he had put in his mouth in a long time. Yes, yes, that's what she said, and jokes were made. But really, this was rank.

We ordered from them because they were open so late, so that might just be the crowd they're catering to.

  8. I love their duck buns!  Their general Tso's chicken isn't bad either.  Come here for happy hour for $2 duck buns.
