I've been stopping in here for lunch for years. Located on a quiet part of Academy Street in between University and Halsey, this is a great spot in Newark's Central Business District to pick up some health conscious eats during the day (like many businesses in the area, it closes towards the end of the business day).
It offers hot bar selections (including many tasty vegetarian selections) and sushi, as well as cold cases in the back filled with specialty health drinks (e.g. kombucha and Tea's Time bottled tea) and your standard bottled beverages. Many people do the wheat grass and rave about it, too. There are a few places to sit – at the bar along the front window and tables near the sushi bar – but the majority of lunch time customers opt for take-out.
While you are there, you can also pick up other health food grocery items and vitamins. Plus, whoever rings you up will usually throw in a chewy ginger candy or two (I love these!). Health Food Store is a unique little gem in Newark that I highly recommend checking out and supporting. Affordable, healthy eating choices in urban areas are possible and places like Healthy Food are proof.
Definitely would not have entered this place had I not seen it on yelp. The outside looks like any other rundown food store, but this one is a bit of a hidden surprise. Let me be honest and say that I didn't think it was amazing as other reviewers, but it wasn't letdown either.
The salad bar has just the basics, so it's good if you want a… basic salad. I will say at least everything looked fresh. I was really looking forward to the sushi bar, but it's really only about 3-4 types of rolls (Cali, tuna, etc) and they're not that great. More rice than filling. Buttt, I did get 4 pieces for $2.70, which makes me estimate that 1 roll would be less than $4! Also, I eat sushi from Shoprite all the time, so I'm not very picky. It's good for a cheap fix.
I came on a Friday at 12:45 and I didn't have to wait in line and I found a seat. The man (owner?) was so nice and checked on me while he was cleaning around me. All in all, not the best but cheap and clean and decent.
In Newark there is always something special to find, unique and a blend of different things. Health food is just that. The owner is very silent not into small talk.
Andre: how long have you been here?
Owner: Grunts
Andre: Wheat Grass. wow is it popular
Owner: have you been under rock?
Hmm He ended up creating a cucumber, apple, beats juice concoction that was so good very cheap. On the other side of this place people were buying the sushi that is create here also. Happy to find such a healthy spot in my favorite part of Newark.
Q:"What's the name of your store?". A: "Health Food"
I work right around the corner from this place and I am baffled as to why it took me so long to stumble in here! This place is simply awesome! Health Food serves up an astounding variety of fresh sushi, salad, juice and a cold/hot bar (by the lb.) Plus, they have a sweet but simple variety of dried fruits, nuts and health snacks/ beverages!
Well Tell Us Why Ya' Love It!
-I beyond appreciate the fact that you can get six (or more) different AMAZING pieces of sushi to-go. High quality sushi with freshness you can taste in every single bite! NUM! Ever since I tried their sushi, it's all I can think about!
-Super friendly staff that consistently has a smile on their face and a "ready to serve you" kind of attitude! Comparable to a Trader Joe's level of friendliness and customer service.
-Did I mention fresh? "Pine-Sol Fresh Baby!"
-Affordable: Six pieces of stellar sushi for $3.19, I'll take that! Plus, my create your own salad was only $5.00 and it was delicious! Sushi is $6.99 per lb. As long as you watch your portions the pricing is great, however if you go hog-wild you may get a little sticker shock at the check out.
-Tasty, Affordable and Healthy food options are hard to come by in the area, so kudos to you Health Food"
-Great Variety: Sushi, Salads, Tilapia, Fruits, Yams, Mushroom Salad, Chick Peas, Tofu, Turkey Breast etc. In addition, Health Food manages to perfectly season their food and every single bite tastes like a rainbow full of awesomeness in your mouth ( okay…a little exaggerated, however I'm kind of amused by this reference).
-You can purchase vitamins and herbs here
Great Option For: EVERYONE! Vegans, vegetarians, dieters, health conscious gym rats and sushi lovers!
Note: I'm not sure of their exact hours, however they are only open M-F and close at 5 PM. Their hours of operation are typical for business located in Downtown Newark in the business district.
