I have to confess that I am a fan because my family and I have been coming here regularly for many many years.
Cumulatively, we must have spent 1000's of dollars here over the years.
I always stop in when in town and grab something at their restaurant in the back that is open limited hours. It's the main reason I come here. I have also shopped for groceries from time to time but it's expensive–more than Whole Paycheck (Foods) in some cases. But if you are in the neighborhood and can save the drive–it's worth it for the convenience.
The women that work the restaurant–at least a couple of them have been there for many many years too. They are NYC friendly, which is unfriendly in most other locales. If you tip them, they are a bit more NYC friendly. But they are efficient and fast getting you your food and that is important–and the food is great tasting. Not an easy job they have.
They have many home like prepared salads, sandwiches, wheatgrass, and other smoothes. Not a large selection, but healthy things you will not find anywhere else. I love the tuna, eggplant, spinach, brown rice, chili, organic dates, squash, wheat grass, and other new concoctions that they have from time to time.
Definitely stop in and check it out if in the area or passing close on the Cross-Island Parkway and want something healthy to eat. Call for restaurant hours–think they usually close at 6 pm so the girls can go home and make more stuff for the next day.
No one acknowledges your presence unless you're at the register ready to check out. Common courtesy is not common here. Customers don't believe in being polite and kind. The staff's forte is not knowledge. Certain items seem to have inflated prices.
For a healthier life, do it the fun way. Go to Health Nuts! I was never a big advocate of gluten free or vegan, however, after coming here I have reached salvation. The store is loaded with all kinds great healthy alternatives. They also have a great selection of dried fruits and nuts. I love the dark chocolate almonds and the mango.
If you want prepared food, there is a great selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free foods in the back where they also make fresh juices.
I stumbled on this place while walking around in the Bay Terrace Shopping Centre. I am glad I found it. I am a bit of a health food nut, so this place satiated me! Its not a Whole Foods, but you can find similar things. I am a big fan of coconut water and they carry quite a few brands, but not Zico. Oh well, can't everything in life. They have a bit of everything, from perishables, to frozen goods, snacks, cosmetics, vitamins, canned goods. They also have a cafe, but I have never tried anything. I am curious it though. If you live near Bayside, you can pick up some of your fave health food items here.
While on the pricier side, I have to say that there always seems to be a lot of great new items at Health Nuts.
As part of a family owned chain of stores (most of which are in Manhattan), I have to say that they know what they are doing.
The deli isn't always very aesthetically pleasing, but everything is tasty. The juices are pretty expensive but worth is since they always use organic produce…The green detox is delicious.
There are so many interesting and healthy snacks. My favorite is the carob/peanutbutter rice cake. It seems weird- but it's actually pretty delicious. CHECK IT OUT!!
And considering smaller health food stores are not as common I do try my hardest to support them whenever I can.
