I've gotten to try a bunch of different food items here, and they've ranged from good (shnitzels, brats, cucumber salad) to very good (potato pancakes). I've never been truly blown away by anything, but it's always solid, and I always enjoy it.
The downsides are that it's expensive for what it is, and while I typically don't really put much weight on the service, the service here tends to be very, very slow.
I'm not a beer drinker, so it's possible that a large part of the value here is being lost on me.
Overall, it's a good option if you're looking for German food on the Upper East Side, but I wouldn't feel the need to go out of my way for it.
My new favorite place! The BF and I were excited to have some good German food that would remind of us our German vacation we took in sept- this place did not disappoint!! The restaurant itself is similar to a beer hall and there was a great variety of beers & traditional food on the menu. We had the schnitzel & the 1 person sausage plate (came w 3 types of sausage) and both were amazing! As was the potato salad & the slaw. This isn't a nice place that I would bring out of town guests unless I knew they loved beer & meat but it's definitely a great neighborhood spot!
I was here for brunch yesterday. I came with a group, and we were well accommodated. We ordered a number of appetizers – fruit salad, cucumber salad, and potato pancakes with applesauce. I ordered spaetzle with bacon for my extree. Overall I would say that I enjoyed all the food, and the service was pretty good. I did have to really flag down the wait staff to get water refills, but the wait staff was friendly. The food is absolutely traditional German. If that is what you want, that is what you get at a place like this. I look at the restaurant as from a bygone era. It was built at a time when "Yorkville" was basically all German, and is a holdover from the past. The wait staff wear dirndl uniforms that are adorable.
Anyway, bottom line is that I used to live almost next door to this restaurant but never went, because dinner is somewhat expensive. But if you want to try out the place, I recommend brunch. The menu is more affordable, and offers some of the German classics for you to try.
I found the food to really be 3 1/2* quality, but I am giving this 4 stars for the ambiance and originality of the restaurant.
This place wasn't really my scene, but I can see the appeal. The inside is very richly decorated and really takes you to an older world filled with German culture. They had an impressive selection of beers. Someone ordered one for me (can't remember the name) and it had strong notes of pumpkin and other spices-delicious but got to be too sweet towards the end. I came here on a Saturday night around midnight and it wasn't super lively. Very down to earth and casual environment though. This is definitely a better place for eating than for drinking. However, I did really like that it was really easy to have a conversation here-it's good for chilling at the bar but not so good for turning up.
Overall I think this place is very good for what it does but personally it's not really the type of spot I would frequent.
Every neighborhood needs a great german beer and sausage restaurant, and this is Yorkville's.
The decor is definitely cozy, with lots of dark wood and noisy, cheerful bustle. The service is pretty good and friendly. Watch out, it gets packed on the weekends – come early!
There's a large selection of excellent german beers on tap and bottled (with boots and large glasses of all shapes). The food itself is really good. We had the 2-person sausage sampler and it was a lot of food for two people, and a great selection of sausage that is definitely made better with copious beer…
Yeah, we're coming back. We'll try during the day on a weekend to see if it's less crowded (but nothing beats sausages and beer in the fall; or on cold winter days…)
Came here for a guys night out with my college buddies. We were 6 people, I thought getting a table on a Friday night would be difficult but everything worked out alright. Their German beer selection is extensive and the mugs come in different sizes. I started with a half liter of beer and a hot soft pretzel at the bar. It was a perfect match. We then sat down for dinner. Our waiter recommended several appetizers for our table. They were are very good. Basically tried all of their hot apps. My favorite were the potato pancakes. Very crispy. Then for my entree I had the Pork Shank. It was the star of the night. It had a succulent crispy skin that had a snap to it when I took the first bite. It was so moist and smokey. I loved it. My final course was their Black Forest cake. It was not so good. It was br what I expected. Overall I would definitely come back here again. Service was good too.
Heidelberg is great.
When game of thrones season starts I will probably go there and order something that looks appropriately game of thronsey.
The food is consistent and excellent, the service is helpful and the restaurant is just plain fun.
It is, however, ontologically impossible not to over eat. When you walk in you already have over eaten.
Plan accordingly. If you are going you should avoid eating for 1-3 days and also bring a pamphlet for bariatric surgery.
Now I'm just rating this place off the beer and also felt like I was on the set of Inglorious bastards when they are at the bar and drinking with the Germans. This place was recommended to me by a colleague. He specifically told me the inside has a real Germany feel to it when he visited. The staff is even dressed down to their shorts, suspenders and hats and the place has beautiful Beer Steins and Das Boots all around the place. We came in here to just grab one drink and we ended up with 3 lol. The best part is the gent at the door told us if we came in here to just drink we can sit down at the tables right around the bar and noone would bother us. This place is really cool and I recommend it to anyone who just want to sit down and feel like you're on a set of Inglorious bastards.
