We had dinner at the Heirloom Tavern on a snowy Saturday night. Its located across the train tracks and there was plenty of parking. The place itself is very cosy, with a nice intimate bar located at the front of the restaurant. After having a cocktail, our party was sat down. There were 6 of us and we had a nice circular table. After another round of drinks we got our apps and salads. I wish I remembered what the rest of my friends or even my wife got but I would've forgotten it anyways because I had this amazing goat cheese guacamole. I was not sure what to expect but it had this little zing/tangy effect that just made me want more (and consequently not share… but I did). Dinner was odd because it was 3 couples and each couple got the same dish. My wife and I got the blackened Mahi Mahi, and the other orders were the philly cheesesteaks and the skirt steaks. Everyone was very happy with dinner. And the drinks kept rolling on thru dinner. I was going to skip dessert but when beignets are on the menu you cannot pass them up. This place is an incredible hidden gem that we will be sure to visit again. It's a great place for a quiet night out or with a group of friends.
Not cheap – higher cost, but quality to match. My wife had … a fish dish, I forget the fish, but it was cooked perfectly, as was her farro risotto. I had the paella special, and the seafood was perfectly cooked. You can tell a lot about a restaurant by how they cook their chicken, and how they cook their shrimp. The shrimp in the paella was spot-on. Beignets were not exactly beignets, more like puff pastry, but tasty, and worth the cost.
Signature Manhattan was all right, though I was not asked if I wanted the cocktail on the rocks (why are Manhattans served on rocks so often these days? serve that sucker neat, c'mon!)
Parking was very convenient, the restaurant faces the Glen Head LIRR station, and a string of 2-hour parking spots (great for diners, terrible for commuters).
Be advised – the web site is a bit much. The logo, and huge headshot of the chef, is reminiscent of Gordon Ramsay & Hell's Kitchen (that's not a compliment). Ignore that mess, the food is delicious. We'll be back for sure.
I searched Yelp for a good restaurant and opted to have brunch here based on the positive reviews.
It was early in the afternoon and the restaurant was deserted. We were the only patrons at the restaurant. We ordered the french toast and crab cakes eggs benedict. The toast was fluffy and crispy on the outside while the bread was so soft. There were dices of apples on top with raisins. There is also a side of bacon, sausages and home fries. This was definitely a good choice.
Meanwhile the crab cakes were also delicious but slightly on the salty side.
We ordered a lobster taco but was slightly disappointed there were only two piece of lobster. It was okay.
Overall, the brunch experience was good slightly above average but not amazing.
This review is 3.5 stars.
You probably shouldn't be allowed to yelp a restaurant when you went there while you were drunk ( it was New Years Eve – stop judging me ) but here goes!
let me tell you, I can't quite remember specifics, but I DO remember bits and pieces. 1. I remember a friendly older man taking my coat and letting us know our table would be ready soon.
2. I remember going to the bar (heads up – small restaurant ) and getting 4 shots of whiskey. The bartender was generous.
3. I don't remember ANYTHING about the server but I remember drinks being filled. Water that is…
4. The food was outstanding. We each picked a few small plates. We had oysters, some kind of meat on a skewer, shrimp lettuce tacos and one more thing. What I do remember is thinking …. I want more food… But no one else at the table wanted any more. So then I remember thinking to myself… I need to come here again, sober, more hungry and with people with bigger appetites.
the end.
5 stars for food, 3 stars for service.
I was a bit concerned considering the location is in the LIRR parking lot. Place looks a bit bare bones. The menu has some eclectic choices (a few odd Asian dishes in a sea of typical American fare).
That being said, the food was fantastic. We went with a large group and there was not a loser in the group. Everything was terrific. Drinks were alright.
Service was a bit odd. Some appetizers took a bit long to come out with no mention of it by the staff, and I kept getting elbowed every time a busser came by to take plates.
Service notwithstanding, you should definitley try this place.
3.5 stars but I'll round up to 4.
Came to Heirloom Tavern for Long Island Restaurant Week. I made a dinner reservation expecting it to be packed but showed up to a place that was deserted like the Sahara. I got nervous that I picked a bad restaurant, but then I realized this is probably how Glen Head is at 9 pm on a Sunday night.
We started with the meatball sliders and the pumpkin ravioli for our appetizers. The sliders were standard, nothing really stood out to me, but the pumpkin ravioli was AMAZING. The ravioli had warm, gooey pumpkin flavor in every bite and was topped with pecans to give it a nutty taste. For my entrée I got braised short ribs with polenta and brussel sprouts which I enjoyed. The braised ribs were moist, juicy, fell right off the bone and the polenta was the perfect complement to the dish. We also got the BBQ ribs which came with a side of corn bread and cole slaw. We were sad to find that the ribs were overcooked so they were a bit on the dry side. The corn bread didn't taste too fresh either. We ended our meal with their pumpkin crème brulee (I'm a huge pumpkin fan if you didn't realize by now) and the apple tart with sorbet on the side. The pumpkin crème brulee was delicious but I probably wouldn't get the apple tart again.
All in all, we had a good time. The place was very cozy, with dim lighting and a romantic atmosphere. The staff were some of the most genuine and friendly people and really made my dining experience enjoyable.
When we entered the Heirloom Tavern, we didn't know what to expect. We had been house hunting all day long, and found this unlikely spot adjacent to the rail terminal in Glen Head. It didn't take long for us to realize we were somewhere special and inquired about the food. When we were told that we were in the same restaurant that the owner of the Brass Rail, we understood completely.
The small plate menu is right up our alley; we love to sample a little from each corner of the menu. We opted for the crab cake, the ravioli and the veal meatballs. All of them were excellent and we knew that the design of the plates and the flavors were familiar to us. We eat at the Brass Rail every couple of weeks and noticed the flavors and the feel of the food.
Not usually a dessert guy, I must say that the cheesecake was THE SINGLE BEST dessert I've had in many, many years. Wow! It was so delicious I grunted while I ate… Yes… that good.
The restaurant filled up completely and we cant wait to get back there to sit in the patio when the weather is a little more agreeable.
