  1. This volunteer-run rooftop urban farm is in its 4th growing season, and aims at greater food security for the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood and greater accessibility to fresh produce, through collaborative farming, community initiatives, and education.

On the sunny rooftop of Metro Baptist Church at W 40th and 9.25th Ave, there are 52 blue kiddie pools serving as raised beds! And some compost tumblers and railing planters.

This is a fun place to volunteer with really good people–plant, water, weed, harvest–bring a water bottle and a friend, lather up the sunscreen, and get your hands in the dirt. They'll provide snips and pruners and any other tools. The harvest goes to the food pantry in the same building. Kids are welcome too!

They host events and celebrations and educational programming from time to time (rooftop movie screening, summer solstice party, etc) and can accommodate individuals or groups who wish to volunteer.

HKFP, way to lead the way in integrating earth care and food justice into urban ministry! And to take advantage of underutilized space. I came to work, workout (the stairs to the rooftop are no joke) learn, and play, and will be back for more.
