Hero King Handcrafted Sandwiches

“The guys are super friendly, the subs are enormous, and they top it with just the right amount of oil, vinegar, etc…”

“My personal favorite is the cold cut sandwich ham, turkey, and cheese with the works.”

“Well at Hero King, a "mini" sub is six inches, a "half" is 12 inches and I believe they have a larger size but I forget :-(.”

  1. Quick, filling, cheap, tasty.
Are those the ideal things for a sandwich shop. Yea i know they are thats why this bad boy gets a 5 star bruvaman.

4 Sandwiches (1 hot) were made in all of 6 minutes freshly cut everything including deli meats, chicken, and all the additional toppings.

We all got foot long sandwiches (called "half" size) and they all had enough meat where it was filling but not too much meat where it was no longer a desirable sandwich. We got a #1 a #4 a chicken club, and a belly buster. All the sanwiches were made to perfection.

This place is a perfect stop for a pick up lunch.

There is a small counter that could probably fit 3 or 4 people but most people were taking orders to go.

  2. OK they run out of bread i get it ..its super good stuff ..in my office everyone look like some one died. goes into Matrix slow motion as News come "THERE IS NO MORE BREAD" sucks we just have to be early with the order next time. have your order ready by 8am to ensure our "Hero King" saves us

I always order the mini peeper turkey and that is always filling ..but i have noticed the pastrami everyone else orders smells so good so i went for a bite I'm hooked

Also their salads and GINORMOUS full of chicken and whatever veg tables your heart desire r olives, onions, tomatoes 7.00 bucks it's worth it .the chicken is seasoned i think by a local churrasco or something its like crack i need more of it ..actually i would continue my review but i trying to finish this sandwich….its more like a Sand"warlock"

  3. There was a time, when I was a kid, when we would order subs and I thought they were as big as my arm…they were huge.  Hero King brings me back to my days standing in our local sub shop and watching them make these huge subs.  The following statement probably shouldn't be written, but I don't think I can finish a whole Hero King sub.  Maybe when I was 20, but not now.  These sandwiches are  HUGE.

The first time I went to Hero King-I mistakenly ordered a whole turkey, provalone, and salami with the works…Ate half.  Second time I went I got half a cappicola, salami, and provalone with the works…barely finished that.  This isn't a $5 foot long with crappy, pre-measured meats and cheeses, it's a real sub where they put the meat and cheese on by the fistful and it's going on a fresh long-roll.  The toppings are tossed on in the same manner-you don't get six little rings of onion and a thin layer of lettuce, you get handfuls.  I've NEVER gotten a sandwich here that was anything less than awesome.  If Jared were eating these foot-longs every day he certainly wouldn't have become famous for losing weight…this is a Jersey sub dammit!

There are two places I go in the area for subs where you simply can't beat the value…and Hero King is one of them.

  4. Wow!

Had a 4 hour layover at Newark, and wanted to get out of the airport.  Jumped in a cab and came here, and it was absolutely worth the journey.

Bread was great- had the spicy Italian.

Owner was there and was super friendly and gave great service.

Just a note- limited seating if you're like me and coming with a family from the airport.

But overall, outstanding sandwich and the prices can't be beat!

  5. Huge sandwiches loaded with meat and condiments on a fresh roll for a low price.  Hard to beat this value …

  6. When it comes to cold cut sandwiches, Hero King is in a league of it's own. No one else in Newark even comes close.

Forget Subway. Forget Blimpie. Forget your local deli. This is where you need to eat to see where all other sandwiches will be measured against for the rest of your life. I've been coming here for years and, even though some of the faces have changed and the interior was redesigned, one thing has stayed the same. The size and quality of anything on their menu.

Seriously though, unless you're a competitive eater or a gastro-masochist, beware of getting the footlongs. They are gut-busting. The best part about this place is that you get a huge bang for your buck and the staff are really friendly.

Overall, there's not much else to say. This establishment is very deserving of its name. A true King amongst jesters with delusions of grandeur.

  7. Do you love a good old fashion New York deli sandwich?! So do I! This spot is it! Although the prices can stir a little closely to the pricey side it is worth it! The quality of the meats and cheeses are great and the bread is super fresh. The whole size is enough for two people or you can save the other half for later. The delivery time does take a while but trust me it's worth the wait!

  8. This review is based on my first experience here . I was over at the Hilton for a seminar and needed a close place to grab lunch . I spotted this place on Yelp ( obviously ) and saw all the great reviews so we decided to give it a try. When we got there, there was a line of about 15 people ranging from construction workers to guys in shirts and ties ; always a good sign.

So here is why I gave 5 stars. 1) I love a good divey place with unexpected good quality food 2) although there was a line, they were so on top of everything . The second you walked in the door they were yelling out loud to you, seeing if you were ready to order. It was like a pleasant assembly line . The staff was super nice and within 8 mins with 15 people on line , I had a sandwich in my hand . 3) the sandwich was fantastic . I didn't take any pictures bc I forgot to while I was stuffing my face with all that deliciousness.

Check them out when you're in the Newark Penn Station area.
