My friend and I came across this Chinese restaurant by accident…. We actually meant to hit up the place further down 48th! Anyhow, this was a happy accident because we had a delicious meal!
At first glance, this place seemed like any other Chinese restaurant that people mainly frequent to-go, but don't judge a book by its cover! For one, the food here is pretty cheap. Secondly, the menu is pretty diverse and had a bunch of vegetarian options!
I ordered the sesame bean curd and I was extremely satisfied- the bean curd wasn't fried which also made me very happy. My friend got the chicken with green beans and garlic sauce and supplemented for brown rice and was very pleased. They gave more than enough rice, but were just a bit stingy on the chicken and bean curd. I got a passion fruit bubble tea also that was too sweet- the only thing I wouldn't recommend.
The only reason I wouldn't give this place 5 stars is because the staff was sort of a put-off. Although kind, they were SUPER intense and didn't seem to care about questions you had.
No atmosphere at all, but quick and tasty food. My noodle soup with wontons featured hot, fresh-tasting, delicious chicken broth and ample wontons, and the duck over rice was very tender and tasty with a hint of five-spice, not dry or tough at all and plenty of meat.
I have to say for a fast paced takeout/takeout buffet place the food is pretty solid. Nothing stands out to write home about but it's all pretty tasty. I like that I can get chinatown-esque roasted meats and dishes here. A plus is that they have every item on their menu in both chinese and english! I usually like to order their soy sauce chicken, pork belly with spring onions and char siu. Wonton soup hits the spot too!
The ordering process is pretty quick and the turn around time of them packing your food and yelling out that it's ready for pickup and payment is even quicker, scary.
The space is nothing to look at but it is clean and a decent size even though it looks small from the outside.
Having just eaten dinner, I was only here for the bubble tea, but now I'm a bit sad I didn't get to try the food here because it looked legit. Who knew there was an authentic Chinese restaurant just a few blocks from Times Square?
The bubble tea is made with fresh fruit if you order mango, kiwi, or watermelon ~ otherwise you'll get the powder. Prices are higher than in Chinatown ($3.50 for the smoothie, add 50 cents for bubbles). Looks like this is more of a lunch place, so the bubbles weren't as fresh at dinner.
However, I want to check Hing Won again because I think I missed the main attraction.
Just by looking at the place I'm convinced this is Chinatown at Rockefeller-amazing indeed. I will update the review when I eat there and mark my words, for taste, this is just like Chinatown. I'm sure prices are a slightly different story.
i love a good bbq meats styled chinese place with no frills. the best part is you can feed yourself easily for under $10. they have the select your dishes and weigh by pound, another for chopped meats/bbq meats. the lines are slightly confusing and there could be a huge crowd standing off to the side confusing things even more, but its because they've already ordered and are waiting to be called to pick it up. so thats not that efficient but once you get the hang of it you will know what to do the next time. theres a huge variety of dishes to order as well. so satisfying to have duck with white rice in midtown!! they do have seats to eat in as well.
Nice selection of Chinese food for $7.50 /lb at the Hot Buffet, AND they take credit cards.
My favorites are the boneless ribs, eggplant in garlic sauce, and bourbon chicken.
Also if hot buffet's aren't your thing, you can also order things off the menu (some are cooked to order)
The place has a huge portion of Chinese clientele if that tells you anything about the quality
The only place to get a hot Chinese breakfast in midtown. My go-to is the Hong Kong milk tea and the sticky rice. They also have dumplings, all kinds of congee, soy milk, assorted buns, noodles, HK-style breakfast sandwiches, dried shrimp rolls and Chinese fried dough. Get here early bc once they sell out they won't be making more that day. The food isn't terribly refined but hey that's not really what Hing Wong is about. Rather you'll be getting big portions, cheap prices and comforting, greasy grub.
One pet peeve is that they put everything in Styrofoam containers, which I'm trying to avoid for environmental reasons. I usually bring my own Tupperware, but the lady at the counter sometimes forgets or gives me major attitude over having to use my containers. I think she thinks I'm trying to scam her into giving me bigger portions, but I swear I'm not. I'm just trying to save the planet (and save Hing Wong a few cents in container costs).
