  1. One of the better authentic Chinese restaurants out there! By authentic Chinese, I mean authentic Chinese. No American nor fancy European influence is in the mix. I am talking about real Chinese food*, with true local flavors. I celebrated my birthday here back in October with friends in the VIP Room, which is tucked in the back corner of the restaurant(just like in China)! Unfortunately, I do not have much photos from that night because my phone's battery died. :'(

I don't really eat out at Chinese restaurants, so one of my relatives who came to visit from China did most of the ordering. There were as much as 15-20 different dishes that were ordered that night, a lot of which were meat dishes. Of the 15-20, the ones that stood out to me the most were the Jellyfish Salad, Three-Cup Chicken, and Cumin Lamb.

Jellyfish in the Jellyfish Salad had a sort of bumpy, yet smooth texture like clear noodles. It left this cool feeling in the mouth and built up anticipation for what was to come.

The Three-Cup Chicken here is the best! This restaurant did not skimp on ingredients nor drench the entire plate with sauce. Chicken was tender and the whole dish resonated with subtle notes of dried chili peppers and star anise.

My favorite dish from that night is definitely the Cumin Lamb! It came out on a huge tray ladened with dozens of different spices. Vegetables were placed below the star attraction for presentation and to balance out the what Chinese people call "fire" of the dish(Google "5 elements of food" and give yourself a pat on the back for learning something new). The lamb was fresh, juicy, and tender. The variety of scents and flavors of the spices, infused with the meat and bone of the lamb, further brought out the umami that was hidden within the muscle fibers. Pictures of the countryside immediately arose in my mind. Very rustic!

Everything was freshly prepared and made from scratch. Nothing tasted many days old. I loved every dish that I tried. Service was amazing and servers frequently came by to check that everything was okay. We stayed a little bit past closing time, and no one rushed us.

Alas, it seems that not many people know of this restaurant(which is located across from Queens Botanical Garden) unless they live nearby or happen to be in the area. However, word-of-mouth still manages to keep this place afloat.

Great food, great vibes, & great service. This is the place to be when you're in Flushing!

*I just realized that 'Chinese food' is a very broad category and composes of foods from many different regions in China. The Chinese cuisine that I am referring to is that of Szechuan. Sorry for any misunderstanding. *

  2. This place is the 911 BOMB we have been searching for and never seem to be able to find. How many times have I asked for "hot and spicy" and have gotten Americanized spicing and not the real deal. Located south of downtown its easy parking compared to Prince Street area. It's like the burbs….The place is still spotless and the servers friendly and bi-lingual which is a plus.

We ordered Dan-Dan Noodle w/chile & Minced Pork in a wonderful hot and spicy red oil and Dumpling in Red Chili Sauce…even hotter and tastier than the DD Noodles.
For mains we started with Mapo Tofu, delicious squares of Tofu in a wonderful sauce that was actually tasty without being killer hot. The killer of the meal was Braised Sliced Lamb with Roasted chili…This was the hottest thing we ever experienced. The Lamb was coated with hot hot chili and was delicious but melted my fillings!

For a real Szechuan meal HLY fills the bill. If you want to experience something really special go to work on their menu and try as many things as you can. you will be in pain but its soooo gooood!  BTW, I gave HLY 5 stars because its outstanding Szechuan compared to the other similar restaurants….And, its Clean!

  3. A Chinese restaurant on the border of the "Chinese" side of Flushing of Main Street. It's near the kebab restaurants and Middle Eastern shops.

The Sichaun food is quite good. The fried shanghai noodles with were a bit greasy, but the thick udon style noodles were good.

I highly recommend  the spicy cumin lamb. A great version of this dish. There's a decent amount of well cooked lamb and it's way too oily.

My friend and I had three dishes and it ran us about $20 a person. We were way too stuffed as well. The menu seemed quite diverse and different. Recommend if you're away from Main Street and want something spicy regional Chinese cooking.

  4. This place is the sh*t! Wow. I tend to avoid eating out at Chinese restaurants because they all taste the same – oily, deep fried and leaving you feeling terrible about yourself. But man this place is on another level – completely unAmericanized Szechuan Chinese food for an amazing deal.

From the outside its easy to walk past it because the sign for the restaurant is small, the inside is pretty small as well. They have a few roundtables scattered about, somehow we managed to get inside a table in a private room with a sliding door for privacy which was really nice but it did get a little stuffy at times.

Word of warning for those who are sensitive to spice, a majority of their dishes contain dried chilies and chili oil, however you can ask them to tone it down! Each of their dishes average about $10 a plate, with so many of us the best way to try a bit of everything was to do it family style. Here's a preview of my favorites. The first was a jelly fish head dish, it was delicious. The jelly fish was sliced thin mixed with sliced cucumbers and dried chilies in a vinegar marinate. Next were the cold sesame Chinese noodles, egg noodles piled high and marinated in a chili sesame sauce, the spice wasn't overwhelming as I had expected. There was a sliced fried beef dish served over sliced green onions and then wrapped in tofu skins. The tofu slices were the size of wonton wrappers and had a mild flavor that complemented the beef which had a slight sweetness.

We ordered a plateful of fried fish, which was exactly that. Each fish was about 6 inches long, simply battered and deep fried and brought piping hot to our table. The fish had been pre-salted so each bite had a hint of saltiness that didn't require additional sauce. It is served with a delicious salt mix that I did apply liberally to my food. The salt was mixed with Chinese 5 spice and pepper, just wonderful! Not wanting to overload on just meat, we did order the bok choy with sliced shitake mushrooms. The mushrooms were sliced thin horizontally, resulting in a meatlike texture and just the right amount of saltiness.

I was so impressed with the service that we received here, our food came out super quick and throughout the meal the waiter returned to remove plates from our table and replace the small plates that we ate our food off of. I have nothing but good things to say about this place!
