  1. It's unfortunate that I didn't follow Seth P.'s recommendation on this old-timey joint for more than three years, but I finally had some time to venture out here on a weekday (check the schedule before going; this is a daytime-only spot and is closed on Sunday.)

Although I'd normally select pastrami as the crucial bellwether for a Jewish deli, corned beef was mentioned more frequently in news articles, was listed first on the menu and was house-cured, so that was my choice. I enjoyed the juicy, substantial sandwich.

The homestyle soup was a massive stunner. It went a step beyond typical deli soup by adding parsnips. Another good touch was that in additional to regular pickles, there were pickled tomatoes.

While I won't venture all the way through the surprisingly long menu for offerings like mac and cheese, I may check out the hot dog next time.

  2. Our 'go-to' place when we need a filling meal before the Devils games.  A block and a half behind the arena, it fills up as game time approaches, but they are very accommodating and there's always room for more (people, but not food!) – I usually go for the turkey on rye, with slaw and Russian dressing.  comes with a side of either homemade macaroni salad, cole slaw, or potato salad.  As a matter of fact, everything's homemade here – just like a good Jewish deli should be!!!  You will not leave hungry and everything is just so tasty – I've had other items off the menu, but if I going to stuff myself these days, I usually (haha) try to keep it a little healthier.  Hubby got the brisket wrap, which includes sautéed onions and potato pancakes (yeah, he doesn't have to watch his figure!)  He ordered the onion rings instead of fries and I helped him finish those.  The sandwiches are piled high with fresh meat, chilled slaw, and tasty dressing – it's tough finishing one, but once you start you can't stop.  There are complimentary pickes and tomatoes on the table – which always seem fresh and crisp and I always have to have a dill pickle to start my meal off right!  A little on the pricey side, but they don't skimp on the meat of the meal…you won't leave hungry! Enjoy and Let's Go Devils!!!!

  3. Holy pastrami. The best place to eat before a Devils game.

Always excellent food and service. Oh, and beers are something like $4 — good for pre-gaming before the $10 beers at The Rock!

  4. My husband brought home cornbeef pastrami sandwich from his work area the other day saying I had to try it. It didn't sound too appetizing, but it was surprisingly really tasty! The price itself was kind of high, although I'll say the cole slaw and pickles on the side made it worth it. I would like to go back and see what other sandwiches (if any) they have in store just to see if they're as good as the one I tried.

  5. I must say this place got some good food.  Don't get discouraged when looking at the front of the restaurant because it does look old and runned down even when you walk in.  It's like they're saying "hey we've been here for years, why change our look…our food is what matters, so give us a chance" and YOU KNOW WHAT, my friend and I did and I was very satisfied and happy.

My friend and I ordered a caesar salad with pan seared salmon and OMG it was delicious and 1 order was able to feed 2.  We ordered a pasta salad and baked mac n cheese on the side 2.  Kinda wish I didn't because I was so full from the salad.  I must say their salmon was nicely cooked and the balance of the caesar dressing was on point.  They did have a lot of croutons but can't complain too much…right?

Service was quick for a 12pm lunch on a weekday and IT DOES get busy.

We were in and out…..even got a free cookie for checking in on Yelp….the free dessert is a COOKIE…they do have Jared's stuffed cupcakes….mmmmm and other desserts but not offered as a free dessert…the cupcakes are about $3 a pop.

So again, yah the place literally looks like a dive, but the menu is very enticing, so try it out.  Prices are a tad high, that's why I split my salad 🙂

  6. Hobby's is everything people say it is.  It's the Katz of Newark.  Fantastic and authentic.  I had my first pastrami/corn beef sandwich here in 1990.  It would be nice if you didn't have to go on a specops mission to get here though.  The last time I was here, there was a guy outside punching some woman in front of a crowd and a stolen car jumped the sidewalk on Halsey just before I left.  It's third world status, lots of zombies from the Thriller video on missions creeping around amidst an Arabic call to prayer on crappy speakers.  Great location for an intense movie.  Great place to pick up some frankincense, but I wouldn't bring women or children.

  7. Excellent!

    I could eat here daily!

Ordered the corned beef ……..aaaaah so good.

Kinish (not square) had a hint of what tasted like mushroom.

all followed with a diet dr browns cream.

    heavenly.

  8. Hobby's will be the death of me.

Atmosphere: Deli, seating in the back. Not busy at all on a Saturday around noon

Food: Corned Beef & Pastrami Overstuffed Sandwich. $13.50 (almost $3 cheaper than Katz, mind you). And a slice of bread pudding for later that was about $3.

Holy guacamole, this sandwich doe. Heaps of tender pastrami and corned beef. Typically, I HATE cole slaw and cannot eat it, but the blend of it here with the meat was super heavenly. And the rye bread was soft and fresh. I could only eat half the first time around, although it was so good and I was tempted to eat the other (glad I did not).

Bread pudding was soft, sweet, and not too overwhelming. It's a rather large slice too. Overall this place is AMAZING. It may seem pricy but it's well worth it. I can't wait to go back and try everything else they have, although it'll be hard to stray away from that amazing sandwich.

Service is also really quick and friendly.
