Hogan's has been a staple in Midland Park for quite some time. It's become a go-to breakfast place for myself, my husband and in-laws whenever we are in the area. The service is friendly and fast (I mean really fast, the last time I was there the food came out literally no more than 5 minutes after I ordered it) and the food is super yummy! Decor is what you would expect for an old-time diner with the dated floors and seating, I don't mind though, I think it adds to the charm. Definitely worth stopping in for breakfast or lunch 🙂
Strong 3 stars This one is hard to rate. I'm a nostalgic person. Even though my 40th birthday is too quickly approaching, I really have the soul of a person who grew up in the 50's and 60's. I appreciate a place like Hogan's. It's a plain, old coffee shop in a cute, sleepy part of town that isn't going to appeal to Starbucks-obsessed people or those looking for a slick, shiny retro-themed diner. It could use a good polishing, but the locals don't seem to mind.
My grilled cheese wasn't greasy, my husband's bacon was crisp, my son's pancakes tasted really good. Their cole slaw left a lot to be desired. I would order simple here.
Our server was a caring, younger guy, I'm guessing family of the owners. He really made our experience nice. With the lack of diners in Hawthorne/Wyckoff/Midland Park, this place is definitely a solid choice when we are looking for breakfast or a cup of coffee. Just know going in that you're not going to be ordering a latte, and you'll be fine. Simpler times!!! It's a good thing.
Get thrown back in time if you are old enough to remember what neighborhood diners or pop shops were like. Yes it looks like it is something from the sixties, yes the panelling is a slight up grade from what your grandparents had but friendly service. Waitress was over within seconds from you arriving, food order and service comes out just as fast. Solid lunch menu with your basics where the cook will ask you how you want things while he is making it sometimes. If you know what to expect then your experience will be fulfilled with great food. Locals all know each other and can tell you stories if you want to strike up a conversation.
If you can get past the creepy clown decor, this is a solid place to eat or just have coffee and sit and chat.
I've never ordered anything crazy, but my breakfast choices have always been well prepared. I wouldn't go here if I was in a rush though, as they tend to take their time. The bonus with that is that they don't mind if you hang out just having a coffee, as long as there are not people waiting. Service has always been good.
