“Smoked pit beans with brisket burnt ends, baby back pork ribs and pastrami bacon.”

“Yeah, Fette Sau in Wburg is pretty good, but it's too expensive and it's in Wburg crawling with "Brooklyners".”

“The pulled pork was very good, perhaps not my favorite pulled pork that I have tried, but up there.”

  1. ATMOSPHERE: Lots of seating. Open floor plan, with a decent sized bar on the left side when you walk in. There is outdoor seating as well for the summertime. However, every time I have gone there has been a short wait, and the last time I went was only on a Wednesday night!

FOOD: I always get the wings! I believe they are smoked, not fried, so I find them to be, well, smokier in flavor, and am a big fan.

DRINKS: They have happy hour and some drink specials, but full bar. I think I got a wheat beer last time, so didn't venture into anything too crazy, but have had their cocktails before and give a thumbs up.

OVERALL: If you're in the neighborhood and coming back from drinks, stop on in.

  2. I always make sure to come at odd hours to any popular BBQ joint because otherwise, the lines are just horrendous. Hometown BBQ definitely fits in this category as its popularity is well known and even at odd hours, a line will be there.

After taking the free Ikea ferry on Sunday, my friend and I arrived with only having to wait 15 minutes. We ordered  1/2 a pound of brisket and  1/2 pound of pork spare ribs. We were originally going to get the beef rib but it was just too big, selling typically at a pound and half. It looked delicious but we just had to go with something of "smaller" portion. Both meats were really delicious. The crusted seasoning of the meats was perfect. The ribs were fall of the bone. The brisket was soft and tender. I did find the meats to be a bit less moist compared to other bbq joints I had but because the seasoning was so well done and it was still tender, it was still delicious in my BBQ book.

As for the sides, we shared to mac and cheese (medium size), corn bread and sour whiskey pickles (small size). The corn bread was hands down my favorite. Super corny, super buttery. It had a nice outer crunch on the ends and was super soft and moist on the inside. The pickles were crisp and sour. Plenty to share in a small sized cup. My least favorite unfortunately was the mac and cheese. Although it was super creamy and they topped it off with some of their texas queso, the texture was just okay. I am glad I tried it but I don't think I would go out of my way to get it again. It was made from small shell pastas and found it to be too soft and didn't complement the overly cheesy rue.

Overall, a great try of New York BBQ. The restaurant décor is rustic with a good amount of seats to sit and enjoy the meal. I definitely would love to come back and try that monster of a beef rib!

  3. I would definitely return if I was ever in the area.  Hometown BBQ is all the way down in Red Hook, near IKEA.  It has a very open layout with both a rustic and industrial vibe, a small step up from the Mighty Quinn's chain.  Their ribs and brisket are amazing and worth the journey!  I'd pass on the pulled pork though.  It's not as juicy and pales in comparison to the other meats.  Don't forget to try their banana pudding!

  4. On my THIRD attempt to go here (they are closed on Mondays and another time closed for a wedding) I finally was successful.  We grocery shop at Fairway so this place is always staring us down.  The interior is SO CUTE and fun and created a great vibe. It was HUGE, had 2 bars and live music going.  I feel like I was here on a SLOW day an the line was STILL pretty brutal.  We waited probably 20 minutes?  Granted, it's 20 minutes to pay AND get your food, but I prefer places where you pay and then move and wait for food in another area or vice versa.

Any ways: the food was awesome.  We had the brisket, which was great, pork, and chicken wings. Plus slaw and pickles.

The meat was all really good and moist.  I wanted the lamb belly, but it just seemed too rich for the night for me.

The prices were a big high, as everyone says, and I was sad that they didn't have burnt ends, but for $50 for me and my hungry hungry lumberjack, we were STUFFFFFFED.  And there is often a time that we spend $50 and he is still hungry.   SO that was a success.

I would def go back, def take people with me, def have an empty stomach. And next time: def try the lamb.

  5. The BF & I were spending the day exploring the area of Red Hook.  After a great lunch at the Red Hook Lobster Pound and a full day of drinking, we headed to Hometown BBQ for dinner.  The line is LONG (about a 45+ wait), but at least I had a whiskey sour in hand and some live country music to listen to!  We shared the brisket, pulled pork, wood fired chicken, Texas-style queso mac & cheese, hometown slaw, and corn bread.  Everything was super tasty and you get a real feel of that authentic Southern atmosphere!

  6. I had a long list of places to try in the city while I was visiting for the weekend but our hosts, who know their food, insisted we come here. I am SO glad we did!

We arrived around 9ish on a Friday night and were greeted by an enormous line (it was almost an hour long!) Thankfully we had anticipated this and didn't come too hungry. We were also kept occupied during the wait by a pretty decent selection of cheap beer and fun cocktails!

The only thing we found really frustrating is that they ran out of food as the night wore on. It definitely sucked to have to watch them cross one menu item after another off the board as we were stuck waiting. By the time it was our turn to order, they had run out of a lot of the stars (the lamb belly, beef ribs, and almost all of their pork rib options).

That said, we still managed to get the brisket, some chicken, wings, and a bunch of sides. And let me tell you, it was all SOOOO good and still far more than what we could actually manage to eat. The brisket was tender enough to eat it with a spoon, the wings were easily the best I've ever had, and their mac and cheese is mind blowingly good!

I definitely recommend this place. Just come early and not too hungry.

  7. The brisket (a sure 5 star) here was too awesome that I need to come back and just eat brisket only.  I also liked the Chinese sticky ribs (a 4 star), and I thought the Jamaican jerk ribs weren't bad either (3.5 star) Unfortunately the sides were a little disappointing: the mac and cheese was lukewarm and lacks flavor, the collard greens were just a merely Okay.  The place is pretty roomy, so I think it is family friendly (we are about to have a baby so I am making a mental note on places we can bring our little monster)  Remember, get the brisket!

  8. Friend told me the wait would be 1 hour+. I laughed. Then cried. Because it turned out to be 1.3 hours. As we inched towards the counter we had the staff come up to the menus on the walls to put rubber magnet things on the items that were sold out… and every time everyone wailed in misery… (some a$$wipe cussed the staff out about this – chill it with the shots, bro, you ain't in Jersey Shore)

I'm just so confused why the service is so slow. Duane Reade has more registers open at 4 am in the middle of nowhere town New Jersey.

    Anyhow, on to the food…

The brisket is a must! It's less fatty then any other bbq place i've gotten brisket at, so really liked that. Less congealed fat all over the meat slab when i took the leftovers home. I do think it could have used a bit more seasoning, I found it bland.

The wings – I don't know why it's called Vietnamese wings, it's more like sweet bbq sauce so it feels like Korean fried chicken. I don't think I've found the wings during the four years I've lived in Vietnam. But anyhow, they're good. Crispy!

The baby back ribs – it's surprisingly dry. I'd skip it.

Mac n Cheese – this was almost worth the 1+hour wait. Almost. Mac and cheese here is better than Fette Sau and Mighty Quinn's.

Collard Greens – a bit on the salty side. Meh.

Overall: Yay! I'm a fan of the food but A-OK about the wait & service.
