  1. Watching Food Inc. didn't turn me into a vegetarian, but it certainly had me thinking about where my beef was coming from. I recently moved to East Village, and Associated Supermarket (a less than desireable option) was seemingly the only choice for buying fresh meat. As a butcher rookie, I decided to turn to Yelp to find a conscious and reliable local butcher.

I found Honest Chops only 5 blocks from my apartment and bookmarked it. Some days later, I was in the mood for a steak and knew just where to turn. I arrived on a Saturday around 6pm, and it was still busy inside. At first sight, they had a nice selection of homemade sausages, short rib patties, and whole chickens. I also discovered it is a halal butcher, so they don't carry any pork product.

I wanted to pick up two 8oz filets for my friend and myself. A very nice employee came over to assist me, as I noticed they had no filet left in the refrigerated display. Feeling a little disappointed, I was about to opt for a different cut. He then told me, "Oh no problem. We have more in the fridge." He disappeared for about five minutes, and then suddenly I saw him emerging from the fridge carrying an entire cow carcass. The WHOLE cow. How many tiny butcher shops in the East Village do you know that process whole cows?

He proceeded to butcher the carcass to retrieve my filet. It took him about 10 minutes, but I just watched in fascination. He finally finished and arrived back with the filet and sliced me two 8oz cuts.

The gentleman that was helping me could have easily suggested I try a different cut, but instead went through all of that effort just for my pound of filet. Not only was this excellent customer service, but I also appreciate that they make the effort to process the entire cow. You can even trace your meat back to the original animal. It doesn't get much more transparent than that.

  2. I am updating my review to reflect the actual experience.  Purchased many items (see my last review).  When it was time to cook they didn't come out as flavorful as expected.  The kabobs turned out dry.  The lamb was nothing special.  The only worthy items were their brisket blend hamburger patties.

I really wanted this place to impress me.  Unfortunately the end product just did not live up to expectations.  Not worth the trip into the city.
