This was the first stand that caught my eye at Madison Square Eats on opening night. I was drawn in by the golden lucky cats, pumping their little kitten fists to the pulsating beat of club music, beckoning me to come toward the HK Street Cart stand.
"Our food is purrrrfect," they waved, "Come try us meowwww!"*
I just knew I had to try the Pork Belly Bun ($4), and my bf got one too. I first thought that it was going to be like a Siopao (which I love), but instead it was an open-faced bun like the ones you get with Peking Duck. But instead of duck meat, this little bun contained a delightfully thick slice of Soy-marinated pork belly, scallions, a touch of spicy sauce, & a couple slices of fresh cucumber. The pork was thick & juicy with the perfect amount of flavor & fat. The little bun was soft & fluffy. The cucumber was a light, fresh contrast to all the salty & juicy flavors in the meat. Seriously, each bite was better than the last — I didn't want it to end! (Truth: the soy sauce dripped on my pants, & I was honestly more upset that I lost some sauce than I was about the pants.)
Now, while we were waiting for our Pork Belly Buns, we actually took the time to read the rest of the menu. My bf gasped: "Fried Snow Crab Claws! I haven't had those in foreverrr. I'm getting them!" and he immediately added them to our order. Four claws, coated with a shrimp & spring mix, & breaded for $10. They came with a dipping sauce & a lemon for squeezin'. I didn't try them (I don't like crab … or claws), but he couldn't stop raving about how delicious they were. He's told me that we're going back to get more, because two days later (and counting), he's still thinking about them.
So, we're probably coming back. Boyfriend wants more Crab Claws, & I could go for another Pork Belly Bun. I'd also love to try the Cold Peanut Noodles, which I would've ordered if I wasn't trying to save myself for some of the other food stands. I highly recommend stopping at HK Street Cart during Madison Square Eats. Besides, when's the last time a herd of fist-pumping lucky golden kittens ever led you wrong?

* Ok that didn't happen at all. But it could have!
I feel cheated…like a girl who went on a blind date and was told glorious things about the other person and then was greatly disappointed and still hungry. Yup that's how I felt
I read all these great reviews about the pork bun and I'm all excited for it.
$5 for one, ok, it must be amazing
What do I get
A pork bun on a sweet roll (similar to a Hawaiian roll), pickle/cucumber piece, some onion that didn't really add anything to the piece and the pork belly.
Now the belly was alright (hence 2 stars), it was tender but not melt in your mouth. It was sauced but I wouldn't say marinated.
I was not a fan
Short wait. All I ordered was the honey siracha wings so I can't comment too much on this place. That being said, my sister said verbatim: "Normally I hate wings, but I like these." So, not the highest praise ever, but still pretty good.
The honey flavor and siracha paired well, as the predominant flavor was sweet, with an aftertaste of spicy.
At 5 wings for $6 the price seemed fair, especially given how expensive the rest of the places at Madison Square Eats were.
I'm confused … their name says Hong Kong so it made me think that they were going to sell Hong Kong style type of food (rice noodles, fried chicken, fish balls, etc), but instead, I read Thai-inspired dishes as my eyes glanced down the menu. After much debating, I ordered the Spinach Noodles with Peanut Sauce (considered one of the inexpensive items priced at $6). Absolutely delicious! The spinach noodles were perfectly cooked and the right temperature too (not too cold so that it makes your teeth hurt, but not warm/hot as they're supposed to be cold noodles). The peanut sauce topping was also very good, a perfect consistency between crunchy and creamy.
I saw many people order the Hong Kong Street Cart's salad as well as their Chili Shrimp so I am definitely intrigued to go back for more. BEWARE that the wait time is pretty long. I waited a solid 30 minutes for my food after I ordered and there really isn't much standing room if you're waiting. If you're planning a lunch visit, highly recommended that you take an early or late lunch. Don't go between 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM.
Guys inside the cart are very friendly and speak near-perfect English. Very helpful and patient as well. They work efficiently without rushing you through the ordering process.
I ordered the Roasted BBQ pork and ramen soup for lunch via Caviar Fastbite ($15 under 15 minutes deal). Chinese BBQ pork, wonton noodles, and a simple broth basically equal comfort food for me. For the price and quality, this dish was pretty average compared to what I can get in Chinatown. The pork was quite tough and not very juicy, and the broth had far too much soy sauce in it. I found myself drinking water nonstop afterwards.
Four words: steamed pork belly bun. Basically a delicious explosions of flavor. And at 4$ how can you go wrong? You can't. Delicious.
ramen?!? ehh…
pork belly bun?! yes!!!!!!!!! (get 3 for yourself)
edit: actually… get 4! :9
Tried out the Urban Space location, and with high hopes from reading previous review on the cold peanut butter noodles, I decided to grab a bowl as a snack. Service was relatively quick, probably not much longer than 5 minutes around the early evening. Can't say the same about lunch hour though, the wait would probably be around 25 minutes!
The noodles were cold (just as advertised!), but they weren't exactly the most flavorful. The peanut sauce was on the sweet side, could've used a bit more salt. Lastly, the chicken had some nice char on it, but tasted like…cold, bland chicken? Bummer.
