Oh Honshu, how I missed you so. I moved away from JC last year and heard that they moved to a new location. Decided to stop in and check it out before meeting with friends in Hoboken that night. Circling for street parking in the area was a pain as always, but we eventually squeezed our way into a spot after ten minutes- lucked out as it was only one block away.
First thing to note is how much bigger their space is compared to before! Good for them! Plenty more seats to accommodate more guests in. They also have a full serviced bar now so no more BYOB. Since we had plans to have a drink post-dinner, I didn't bother checking the drink menu, but I'm sure we'll return again to meet with friends for a drink here at some point.
Very glad that even with the cosmetic makeover, it is still the same old Honshu we knew and loved at their smaller location! We saw some familiar faces as well as some new ones on staff- they were super busy this night, but they were still accommodating and attentive. The food was as consistent as before. And when I say consistent, I mean still delicious.
HAD TO start with their Signature dish, Spicy Tuna Tartare! I looked around and saw the other tables also starting out with this as well. We all reacted the same way- looove that torched, spicy, saucy goodness!! My boyfriend and I have tried Tuna Tartare at other places, but we truly can't get it like this anywhere else. Happy to be back!! As for our main course, I went with the Chirashi, assorted sashimi over sushi rice. My boyfriend went with the Otsu combo, a spicy California roll, spicy salmon roll, and spicy tuna roll. Both of our meals came with miso soup- a nice addition, as always. Ended the night with some fried ice cream for dessert. They had matcha green tea as a flavor… Always say yes to matcha green tea. Soooo yummy!
Needless to say, we left pleased and full. What more can you ask for? Thank you, Honshu, for yet another amazing dinner. I'll need to find another excuse to come back soon.
This review is only for the delivery.
Live down the road from this place and it's super convenient to order from here. The longest I tend to wait is about 30mins max- and that's on a Fri or Sat night.
Now onto the food. I'm a bit of a sushi junkie, and tend to have it often. Honshu is a reliable source for this craving. I eat sushi a lot and love good, quality sushi. This place may not be mind-blowing, but it's consistently delicious and the variety of signature rolls are good.
Tend to order the spicy variety of rolls and have always been satisfied. Good stuff.
Have you ever had one of those days where you're craving something like sushi, but feel too lazy to go and get it? Yeah, that was me.
At the time, I was staying in a corporate apartment nearby and was happy to see Honshu delivered to our high rise. With 2 and 1-year-old boys in tow, I didn't want to load up the stroller, ready the diaper bag, and start walking everywhere for food. (I traveled with them solo and was tired.)
Honshu was fairly speedy to get my sushi rolls to my room. (Thanks for coming up to the 38th floor!) I have no complaints about the tastiness of the food, because it was good. The price wasn't horrible either.
Saturday night dinner, went at 10pm, which feels like a late dinner in Jersey City. Attentive service, techno music (in a good way), and good food overall, with a few misses. Agedashi tofu lacked flavor and the sauce was very bland. Miso soup was lukewarm and also lacked flavor. Sushi and rolls were quite good, cleanly cut and fresh tasting. The hamachi with jalapeño was good but not spicy, if that's what you seek. The rolls specials were well priced, with three separate rolls of six each all for $15. You're not in Manhattan anymore, Dorothy! The unagi roll was particularly good. Service was thoughtful and attentive, in particular the slightly older gentleman, who was friendly and kind, the best waitperson I've had to date in JC (it can be pretty relaxed about service here). If I could give 3.5 stars for Honshu, I would. So far, this is the best sushi we have found in downtown JC but the quest continues.
Honshu could very well be my new fave Japanese restaurant in Jersey City. I usually hit up Teppan, but because the weather has been nicer I'm finally feeling motivated to walk the extra five minutes or so to places that I haven't tried yet. Honshu was so great that I'll come back, even if it's cold.
They haven't been in this location for long, and it's apparent that the space is brand new. It's modern and beautifully decorated. I love how the bar is made out of stone, and the blue lighting gives off a super sleek feel.
I'm not the biggest sushi eater, so I usually judge a Japanese restaurant off of whatever else they'll serve me. Although Sushi House in Hoboken has the best selection of 'non sushi' items, Honshu can definitely keep up. The've got a bunch of tasty sounding appetizer, salad and entree options. I ended up with gyoza (because when do I not order gyoza) which was perfectly pan seared and stuffed with pork and veggies. For my dinner I went with chicken teriyaki. The portion size was very generous and the sauce was perfectly sweet and delicious. My boyfriend got sort sort of crazy tuna roll (but really, I think that is actually what it was called) and he scarfed it down.
We ordered a bottle of pino which was fairly priced at 23 dollars. There was also a pretty massive drink menu with a bunch of cocktail and sake options. Because the restaurant has ample seating and space we didn't wait long for a table or our food on a Friday night at prime dinner time which is always A+ to me. There was also lots of outdoor seating so I'll definitely keep that in mind when I'm looking for a place to grab some lunch outside.
Zero complaints Honshu, five stars for you!
This place is a good sushi spot for Jersey City! It's a large space so they can seat you quickly. The service is definitely slow so don't expect a quick outing. The food is delicious, though. The tuna pizza appetizer is a must try! I just started eating these for the first time and this version was so tasty. The prices are decent and the quality is really good. They take special orders two days early for rammen. I think just for a limited time. Teresa was our waiter and she was so friendly and made good reccomendations! I would definitely come back here. They serve alcohol and have some quality beer choices to pick from.
Came here on a Weds evening around 5:30ish. It was pretty empty cept 1 other table however they did just open for the evening. We were quickly seated. Nice decor and atmosphere.
We were greeted by a waiter with warm hand towelettes, which were really nice, so extra brownie points. And he explained it was during happy hour so there was another menu for cheaper sushi for like 2 hours, another bonus.
So we honestly did the most basic rolls cause we werent really crazy and the happy hour rolls were cheap.
I did the spring warm roll (at least I think that was what it was called) and it was pretty good. Im usually eh about warm sushi, but it was well made. It basically was an eggroll inside a sushi.
My SO did like cali rolls, spicy tuna & just tempura. And all were so basic, that you couldn't really mess it up. However, the spicy tuna was not good. It has a super weird and funky fishy taste as you ate it and bad after taste.
But the customer service was so amazing, that I will definitely be returning when I am in a sushi mood so I can actually get a variety of their menu.
So I've ordered from Honshu a couple of more times after my first review and decided to upgrade their rating to 5 stars. Why? Well, they've upped their seamless game by continuously staying within the estimated time for pickup/delivery. Second, I realized that they have some pretty fresh raw seafood- and give a generous amount in their rolls! The Maki deluxe is a two-mealer for me. Eat half for lunch, save half for dinner.
Honshu has become my go-to whenever I order out for lunch (I usually pack). A mid-point between healthy and indulgence :d
