“I think it's perfect for a date because it's a sort of out-of-the-way spot, but has such a tremendous and surprising menu.”

  1. Mellawach. That is the only word that matters.

I recently had a just-okay Middle Eastern food experience and I was thinking about Hoomoos Asli the entire time I was eating there. I should have never strayed.

Mellawach sort of tastes like roti, in that it is a thin but doughy pita packed with gluteny flavor. The shawarma was glorious! If I weren't likely to be religiously murdered or hit by a drone strike, I would already by living in Yemen and eating these daily.

I could go on, but the best Yelp review I can provide is that it was great, the falafel was great, and that I long to go back.

  2. In NYC on business. Stuck in the office working with a colleague until 10 PM. Needed to order food in for dinner quick and painlessly. I had wandered around Tribeca the other night (ate at Chop't) and noticed this place almost next door. Made a mental note and grabbed a takeout menu. So when tonight's situation presented itself, it was an obvious choice. My colleague was enthusiastic to try, so we did.
They have an extensive menu of Israeli/middle eastern standards, plus some innovations. Appetizers, soups, salads, mellawach sandwiches (fried Yemenite-style bread), classic Israeli sandwiches, pricier entrees, several different and interesting humus choices, vegetarian, and these amazing innovative combo sandwiches. I had to try one.
Colleague got the Israeli salad sampler (roasted eggplant, red/white cabbage, tabouli) and the classic humus (or as they insist, hoomoos). I got the John Lennon sandwich ( shawarma, falafel, french fries, humus, israeli salad, lettuce, and tahina) and the Egyptian humus with fava beans (fool in Arabic).
They don't emphasize the fact that they are kosher. I had to ask whether they are kosher certified (mashgiah), they are.
Food was promised for 25 minutes, came in 15-20 minutes which was great.
Food was exactly as promised and spectacular. Ingredients, freshness of ingredients, freshness of pita breads, everything amazing and first rate. My sandwich, although unconventional, was simply outstanding. Colleague raved about the food too.
I see the comments on Yelp! about the service and the atmosphere in the restaurant, I can't comment on this. And yes the prices are a bit high, we paid $46 + tip for two people, but for way more food than we could eat.
And yes I would absolutely do it again, in a heartbeat. The food was that good and the delivery experience that easy.

  3. Easy, simple sandwiches. Crispy falafel in chewy pita bread with creamy hummus and crunchy fillings… I'll definitely be back to try different items!

  4. Great if you want to pay 24 dollars for a plate of chicken shawarma and a soda. The outside of this place looks like the back entrance of a municipal waste facility yet when you go in they charge restaurant prices for what should be a self service location. The inside also looks like a complete dump with dirt on the walls, etc. It has the interior setup of a truck top gyro stand yet they do table service. But it's also cash only. And there's a machine there where you can take out cash – for a charge. I would imagine the ownership is more concerned with squeezing every dollar out of their patrons than creating a great experience. The food was great, but my big piece of advice to this place is that they need to choose what they are. Either you are a no-frills, fast, takeout and self serve stop that is cash only, or you are a sit-down restaurant with a nice interior and exterior. They attempt to provide cafeteria food and visuals for restaurant prices. The chicken shawarma was excellent, the bread was also really good and fresh baked, and their chipoltle sauce was excellent. The israeli salad was bland, and the total portion of chicken was far too large for one person. Also confusing was the setup of the place – you can order at the counter but if you sit, you need to be served by a waiter. They have two different menus with completely different pricing, which makes the experience even more confusing. Service was apathetic. With the massive amount of competition in the area that has the same quality for half or a third of the price, I can be confident I will not be back to this place.

  5. Some kosher places like to tuck that fact away for those who need it. Others, like Hoomos Asli, decorate the shop with menorahs and a discrete window display of the Lubavicher Rebbe. Whatever. I was glad to get a good stuffed pita. And that pita–thick, fluffy, warm, and able to hold together in the face of lots of drippy goodness!

I got the "health sandwich," which was sautéed eggplant, hummus, boiled eggs, tahini, and salad. The ingredients weren't crazy fresh like Nish Nush, but the bread was definitely better. The whole sandwich was certainly superior to anything I can get in the 'burbs. With table service for under six bucks. I actually don't know why there aren't more people here at lunch time, because it definitely deserves it.

  6. I've been on a Mediterranean kick lately, so I was so hyped to try this place. Everyone seemed to rave about their hummus and sandwiches.

I got the shwarma sandwich (spicy) and my friend ordered the falafel sandwich and the lentil soup. We both couldn't have been more disappointed.

I still haven't given up hope.

  7. For Mediterranean food this is definitely a go to in NYC. With so many options in the city it can be tough to pick a place when you get that falafel or shwarma craving but this place should definitely stay on your radar. Great spot for a quick lunch or a hangout with some friends. If it were for food alone this place would be 5/5! Shwarma was juicy and very flavorful. The hummus was very creamy and had a nice garlicky spice blend. I would go for the sandwiches, the are packed full of deliciousness and are very creative. How can you beet schnitzel, falafel , avocado, hummus, Israeli salad, fries and spicy sauce all in one pita? I was glad to see that the pitas are thick so that they can stand up to the mound of food they are stuffed with without breaking open after a few bites.
Only a few small negatives. The place is pretty small which can make it tough to sit down with friends but the take out window is quick and easily accessible. The service also could have been better, sometimes it was tough to get someone to notice us and get some more water. Plus they forgot one of our orders including a side of fries. Although they came out really fresh and hot, we had already mostly finished our sandwiches.

  8. Really good hoomoos.  The dine in experience is a little weird but overall top notch food at a good price. Easy for fast food in Soho.
