I have lived in JC a few years and never came to hopscotch. From outside this place looks a bit like chain, but it is not. It's got a local sports bar with a side of dive feel to it. Every table even has a Connect Four or Jenga game on the table.
But my friend I went there to have a few of their many beers and some snacks for a day out and about. The beer selection was massive – one of the biggest I have seen in JC – and the good was great. We went during a slow time , so it's hard to tell it's usual vibe but their events board was full and seems like it keeps it social there.
Hopscotch seems like a great time, I just don't think that I came in at the right time.
Let me elaborate-
It was a Saturday night at around 11:30ish. I had a few friends visiting my new place and we were looking to go out and get our drank and dance on. I'd heard the name HopsScotch thrown around a few times, but had never been before and decided to venture over with the group.
Hops is a massive space and appears to be newly renovated. Drinks are 3 dollars off after ten, there is ample seating and every table has connect four (whatttaa blast from the past). Yet, amidst all of this awesomeness the bar was completely vacant on a Saturday night. I'm talking like really deserted…as in the 5 of us were the only patrons in the bar. Cheap gin and tonic and connect four were definitely able to hold my attention for a bit but after a while we were ready to head somewhere more lively.
I'll venture to guess that HopsScotch is an ideal setting for a happy hour, bar food fixe or Sunday game day. I'm sure I'll be here often during football season, and I'm already planning on coming in for the Southern Tier tap takeover in a few weeks. Just don't expect me to see here on a weekend night- wayyyy too snooze worthy.
For a bar, the food is decent, the mac and cheese can be more cheesy but their wings are good and they have a decent selection of alcohol at the bar. I am a big fan of their spinach and artichoke dip! They also have crabbies ginger beer which is hard to find at other places. This is really close to my office; and they have lots of space so always a great place to stop by after work. They also have a huge space int he back where you can reserve for large parties; their waiters do a really good job with keeping up with large parties, always making sure that your cup isn't empty. Lunch here is decent as well, you cant go wrong with their burgers! Overall great service, atmosphere, great selection of drinks, and decent food.
Great beer selection and they offer flights. Connect 4 at every table. Believe they have darts and other bar games but I didn't partake.
Didn't try the food. Service wasn't the friendliest but OK.
I came here with just my roomie but I think this place is best for larger groups. It was surprisingly deserted on a Friday evening so might actually be a great venue to bring a group of friends.
I've always had a great time here, so I've always wondered where the average rating is coming from. I usually come for drinks and order a few appetizers. For quick bites – the fire wings are just that, and the short rib poutine is impressive.
They have an excellent beer selection, and they also have dart boards and board games that anyone can use. I've been here when they've had live music, and they also have a trivia night. It's never been crowded when I've gone, service has always been very friendly, and there's not much more to say! If you're in the Exchange Place area, it's a quick hop (pun intended?) and is definitely worth it.
Don't be fooled by the 3 stars – this place is pretty good. I've been a few times and would come back again.
It's not terrible, but it needs work to get a 4th star.
PROS
– Games galore! – Shuffle board, Darts, Connect Four, Jenga, Monopoly, etc.
– Big Beer Selection
– Lots of tables/lots of standing room
– Several TVs to watch sports
– Food is decent
CONS
– Service was not so great. Not many people were there, but our server was too busy talking to the bartender to get us our check. We walked over to him to ask for it. Then he never even came to pick it up. Had to walk over to him again to hand it to him. Really bad service on his part.
– Half of the beers I asked to try weren't available. The first two I asked about they didn't have.
– Food is only decent
If they can fix 2 of the 3 cons, this place would get 4 stars. It's got lots of TVs so a good place to catch a sports game and hang with friends. I'll go to any bar that has shuffle board/darts/jenga!
HopsScotch is a place I used to go to once in awhile back when I lived in Jersey City. It's a prototypical craft beer bar with a good number of taps and a bar menu. It was always a good option but I was never crazy about it either at the same time. One of the main reasons is the layout of the space. It's too big and cavernous without it getting packed. This leaves the vibe of the place dead, think like a hotel bar. If you come here with a few friends for food that isn't as big a deal, but if you're coming just to drink or alone then it doesn't work as well as other places nearby. Maybe that isn't a fair critique as it's only based on a few visits, but that's just my opinion. Service was pretty good though; even though not every single person is a beer expert they are at least pleasant.
Tap lines were definitely clean here which is a big place. They had London Pride on tap too which didn't hurt. The variety was good for a beer bar (20+ taps) but still it didn't quite stand out. Again if you're looking for a beer bar this will work. Happy hour specials are good and they also have events sometimes too. Just don't expect Rattle N Hum.
We went here on a Saturday night around 10:30. The place is very fun with a lot of different options for games to play. They also have a great selection of beer to try! We got a big table and played Jenga, connect 4 and shuffle board. There was also a live band playing oldies music! The crowd is mostly an older crowd. We had a great time! I definitely want to go back to try their food.
