This place has an interesting operation going, you may drive right by it. I ordered two dogs and fries and they cooked them on the spot…always a good sign. The best part is that the food was delicious! What more could you want from a place? I may go back to try their burgers because they looked really good. They also had some interesting takes on hot dogs that looked appealing….yet I am a purist at times…mustard only.
This review is based off of getting take out here only once, FYI. I'd give 3.5 stars but decided to round up.
Quick review if you don't want to read this whole thing: Their soups were the bomb diggity (pun intended). I had the Guinness broccoli cheddar soup and the ghost pepper texas chili. Both were excellent. I now want to come back and try ALL the soups since they change them daily. Also, their burgers are good.
Upon walking in, I noticed how small and cute this place is. Reminds me of Johnny Rockets a bit with a classic old timey feel and a checker color theme. They have a million hot sauces lined up on the ketchup counter which got me all excited except I got take out so I couldn't take the time to really look at them sadly.
Their burger was very good, juicy and filling. Hot dogs were whatever but I'm not crazy about hot dogs in general (only Rutts…sorry Hot Diggity). The bacon wrapped hot dog was really good though but seriously when is anything wrapped in bacon NOT good?
Wings are only served on Sundays. I think that's stupid. They should be served everyday considering what kind of establishment this is. Who made up this stupid rule??? Anyway, I came on a Sunday so I got wings in hot buffalo sauce. There were a lot of unique looking flavors that I wanted to try but since it was my first time I didn't want to venture outside the box too much. The hot buffalo was good, very spicy. My only other minor complaint with the wings was that upon first glance into the box, they looked a little bit overly well done (see my pic) there were dark spots on the wings…strange. It didn't taste like it was burnt though so that was good. Just wanted to point it out.
The most fabulous thing from this place? Their soups. They were serving 2 soups that day and I got both of them (judge me, bitches). Guinness broccoli cheddar soup and ghost pepper texas chili. Both were fantastic. The chili was spicy and super flavorful. I really am looking forward to trying all their soups!!
Can't say I agree with any of the negative reviews I read. I visited for lunch and was wowed by their menu and daily specials. I went with a cheesesteak and tater tots well done yum yum yum. Cheesesteak was perfect. Also treated myself to a chocolate egg cream. They are one of the few places left that serve these. Hot Diggity Grill has an old school feel about it, which makes it charming. The staff was very friendly as well. As I was finishing my cheesesteak I saw someone order the BLT and wow did that look awesome. It came on some type of thick bread, definitely have to order that next time I visit.
come here for your greasy burger fix.
This place is small but they have a TV by the counter so I was able to watch the Giants game on my lazy Sunday. They also make wings on weekends but I didn't try because I don't this place is known for wings.
I got a cheesesteak, a burger with taylor ham and fried egg, and tater tots covered with sauce and onions.
I wouldn't go out of my way to come here in the middle of nowhere i mean Hawthorne but I'm glad I tried it.
It pains me to write this updated review. If you've seen my former reviews and tips (and insane amount of check-ins), you know that I'm HDG's biggest fan..WAS their biggest fan.
Pristine atmosphere. Insanely delicious burgers. Great prices. Awesome conversation with the owner and his wife. Magic Bob on select Monday's. HDG had SO much to offer me and my family. It became a weekly event for us and we grew to love it more as they got creative with daily specials and new homemade sauces for their delicious Sunday wings.
Sadly, the person who made this place so special is no longer there and now HDG is merely a shell of what it was. My burger yesterday was gray and had that formerly frozen taste. The TV was off, the place empty. It's a much different experience now and I'm fairly certain the new owners do not follow the original recipes, leaving the name on the door the only thing that remains constant.
A sad day in Hawthorne and for my family, indeed.
Let be clear: NEVER order burgers to go. Sit down, and eat.
I unfortunately ordered my burgers to go and became sad.
BIG MISTAKE.
My bun was so soggy and mushy, that by the time I got home (and it's only half mile drive), I simply couldn't pick up the burger. The soggy bun got stuck to the Styrofoam! The fries done all the way, was very interesting. Not my cup of tea, with its heavy mustard use. Onion rings were a flop. Nothing was that great memorable.
However, I suppose if I were to go next time (which I still believe warrants another visit), I would like to dine in, and try their burgers with the many different hot sauces they offer. And, I'd need it to be double meat too.
There are two components to any restaurant, food and money. Same with restaurant partnerships. If the food is good, then the money will generally flow and both partners can come out happy. If the food is bad, then both suffer equally. This is apparently what happened with Hot Diggity Grill. One partner did the cooking and handled the food and was awesome at both. Their hamburgers were, for example, probably the best in the area, maybe even the best anywhere. The other partner remained somewhat quiet and handled the finances.
There appeared to be a disagreement, the wrong partner won and the food suffered. This was what I suspected would happen but I figured I would give it a shot and see for myself; or rather taste for myself. Colossal disappointment. I can no longer see any compelling reason to eat there unless, of course, you happen to be walking down the street and are hungry for some very mediocre food at very mediocre prices. I can't actually recall a time I was more disappointed in a place that I frequented and recommended enthusiastically to my friends.
The good news, if there is any, is that there is no way they can sustain any level of profitability if they continue their decline. Hopefully this will afford the former owner an opportunity to return and to regain the momentum and quality that was destroyed by their current management. My friends, finding money is easy, cooking is hard.
