  1. This place is new, and I heard they have some of the same cooks as at Grand Sichuan.  I've only ordered takeout once from this spot, so my review might be a little premature, but overall it's a good spot with solid Chinese, but for Chelsea, I think I still prefer Grand Sichuan on 9th & 24th.  May change as I order more from them.

  2. It's super unfortunate when a restaurant has their door wide open with a sign hanging out front that says, "Open" and it isn't. Not even for take out?

Yeah, not cool. If you're closed then close your door, turn your "Open" around and don't invite yourselves for people to walk in so that you can turn them away.

  3. Food is solid.  I have only been here for take out and I like it.  Higher quality food then your typical greasy spoon style Asian joint.  They do all the staples, but just a little better and more refined then your local "wok".  My only complaint is their lunch special menu only comes with brown or white rice and doesn't offer a fried rice option.  Management is firm about no substitutions.  Even if they through an egg and a couple of peas and carrots in there and called it vegetable fried rice, that would cool.  Eh, it's on my radar so worth checking out if you live or work nearby.

  4. Ever crave Regular ol' American Chinese food?

You know the type, your favorite take out place that's not Asian fusion or foo foo fancy. Just guilty pleasure Chinese food. If you said yes then welcome to Hot Sichuan.

Fresh out of the fryer, General Tso's Chicken with a big glob of Ubiquitous brown sauce on top with a broccoli spear that you know you wont eat (Its a garnish) My son orders Sesame Chicken with the same sauce.

Now mind you, I'm not knocking the sauce. Whatever I've been eating for the past twenty years I really don't want to know. I just know its brown and saucy.

I'm sure I'll be back for take out, Hot Sichuan is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood.

  5. Authentic, Sichuan in Chelsea. I've been here four times in the last two weeks. They have these little pan fried dumplings which are so fresh. Rather than huge, doughy, gut bombs these are about half the size of a golf ball. Small, delicate and flavor packed with pork and scallion. I don't know all the names of what I ordered. One came with chicken and green beans. It was lightly sweet and spicy. Very balanced dish.

I've tried the Hunan chicken for lunch. Basically, chicken, chili and green and red bell pepper. $6.95. It's a little spicy with a touch of sweet. It comes with a soup or soda. Basic and delicious.

Shredded pork with garlic sauce is a touch on the salty side. It's sort of has one note, salt. But it's nicely presented with strips of shiitake and water chestnut. $12.95 / $6.95 lunch.

My favorite dish is the Gui Zhou spicy chicken. It comes with white meat chicken, string beans, scallions and chili peppers. It's fragrant, spicy but not oily or gloopy. Perfection.

The Dan Dan noodles were like healthy ramen. Salty, fresh but not great.

Spring rolls are crispy and forgettable.
Last, the owners are nice, the decor clean and simple but a proper restaurant.

If you are in Chelsea and craving Chinese, you can't go wrong with Hot Sichuan. My advice is try lunch first. This way you are not stuck with a huge dish of something you don't like.

  6. Their lunch deal is pretty decent, for about $10 you can get Chinese home cooking style dishes such as sautéed sliced potato with vinegar, Mapo tofu etc with rice and sour and spicy soup; or you can get full entrees such as hot pepper boiled fish. And for my American friends, of course the beef and broccoli sort of deals are available if they are not feeling adventurous. The lunch combo of kongpao chicken is surprisingly authentic. The service is quick and friendly, and I've not seen hair or weird things coming out of my food so that is a victory. I order take out or come here for lunch when I'm craving Chinese but doesn't fee like traveling to China town (or queens. Oh why are you so far queens.)

  7. Really average food.  I ordered online and picked up.  Timing was great; it was hot and ready when I got there, even earlier than expected.  But the chicken and broccoli I ordered was covered in brown sauce and very heavy and greasy.  The portion of rice given with the lunch special was small and the soda that I ordered with it was room temperature.  Not bad, but not great.
